Thanks for the great video, Perry. I will be going through this with my Tommy next year. BTW - when I bought my plane this winter, the previous owner had his mechanic install the Sterling nose link I bought, and it definitely improved the nose shimmy for a while, but it is slowly returning. Maybe sometime we can chat off-line on email about the tolerances and shims. You seem like a very capable engineer / mechanic type of guy.

Absolutely. Send me an email [email protected] hopefully we can get your Tomahawk sorted. Have you found the group on Facebook for all the Tomahawk owners yet? If not, search "Piper Tomahawk Owners" on Facebook and you'll find the group. There is a wealth of knowledge there including a files section with the maintenance manual, parts manuals etc

Thank you! It has worked really well. I think the key is to use the module for low power switching to control the power bars rather than running the 120V through the module itself. Last year my text messages cost me $18 with that sim card so it's a great setup for hangars that don't have wifi available.

This is the first video I've seen from your channel, within about 3 minutes it was pretty clear this particular PA-38 is going to have a great life ahead of it. You love this thing like it's brand new :-) I'm impressed those avionics are still passing the tests some 40 years after manufacture - built to last. Stay safe sir! :-)

Thank you! When I first bought the plane I went through the whole thing with my AME and brought it up to the level I wanted where I can freely take my friends and family on trips. Now it's at the point where I have a full maintenance planner/tracker set up in an Excel spreadsheet and try to make little improvements along the way to make it nicer on every flight! Overall it's a low time airframe (around 3300 TT) and engine has less than 600 hrs since major overhaul. She's a nice bird!

Well, I am speechless, and brought to tears. Thank you for sharing. These are priceless years for you and your son. I am 69 years old, and my father is no longer with us. Today's kids have the advantage of countless pictures and videos to document their lives. I have only a few dozen black and white photos from those years, as film and developing were expensive in those days. You had to hand-wind paper film in the camera and then take it to the drug store to be developed, and wait a week, and pay a fair penny for the results. Anyway, keep the excellent videos coming.

Thank you for the kind words. I really try to get my kids involved with "experiences" rather than "things". I hope someday when they are older and I'm not around that they have great memories of these times.

The names and dates written in the B17 make it a personal experience to simply be in the plane let alone to be able to fly in it. I remember the CAF had a 17 near me in 1986 and the first thing that I saw was men who had served in B17s with their families children and grandchildren telling them well you met the others who were in their airplanes and this is where he was as a waist gunner or whatever. I remember coming away with a very different feeling about the whole experience. Then as time passed I ended up knowing several men who were Waist Gunners on B17s. Unfortunately for us time has passed and most of these men who flew in combat and the brave women who flew aircraft to Europe and the South Pacific are gone now. They are truly the Greatest Generation.

@planeswithperry we need to do a fundraiser for you to get you a new visor for the PAX side... Also a bit concerned about your iPad position blocking your situational awareness of any other aircraft, it's creating a blind spot for you which could be deadly. I've seen it too many times in midair crash report investigations.
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry Ай бұрын
It probably looks like it from the camera angle, but from where I'm sitting the iPad is no further in my view than what the view would be past the A-pillar and side mirror of a car and doesn't interfere with my view outside the window. I can still see runways and taxiways on both sides of runways. As for the visor, I am looking for half a bracket that is 1/4 of the size of a credit card but refuse to pay the $300 a parts vendor wants for it when Ray Bans are cheaper 🤣

@digital_aviator
@digital_aviator Ай бұрын
Always low wing for me, safer in the circuit IMHO. I don't like doing square circuits. The Tomahawk you climb out at 70 KIAS, 500 fpm, 2 min turn and you're on downwind at exactly 1000' AGL. Again turning from base to final, 70 KIAS, 2 min turn and boom you're dead on centerline. I hated the Cessna 152 when I went up in it. Plus *most* aircraft anyone will fly after flight training will be low wing as they progress in their career. Now, having a GoPro mounted like you have on the tail is an awesome addition as it can allow you to check underneath the fuselage is clear in busy airspace as you can feed it to a phone or tablet, helping your situational awareness. As for IFR, I can't wait for the day synthetic vision systems become normal in every aircraft, we have the technology to be able to see terrain around us on digital displays, they should become normalized, especially for mountain flying.
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry 4 күн бұрын
I'm looking forward to the development of technology where we might be able to get some certified options for these aircraft that won't cost a fortune. "One can hope" 🤣

@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry 3 ай бұрын
The runway was cleared to 2800 feet. As far as thickness, a drill test a few days prior to my flight came in at around 30 inches thick. They hosted a fly-in there a few days prior where dozens of aircraft showed up. To give some perspective, my plane with me and the fuel I had on board weighed around half the weight of an empty 2024 Honda Civic. Small planes are lighter than most people realize!

Great video, curious if you somehow tighten down on the ears of the plane. I would imagine you don't want play or flex in the tow bar when moving the tractor from side to side. I see the cotter pins but I would imagine that would still be a bit of play there correct?
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry 4 ай бұрын
There's a bit of play there but clamping down on the ears would fix the bar too tightly to the strut in the way that it wouldn't compensate for up/down movement when transitioning between different slopes on the ground and would bend/break the ears off very quickly. The side to side play is minimal and doesn't affect fine control of maneuvering the plane.

Note taken. 2) the video didn't explain enough. Note taken. Some of you have resorted to childish personal insults which I have been entertained by. Your video editing, music and information are absolutely fine. You have a beautiful family to love and look after and you don't need to be spending zillions of hours searching for royalty free music. It is sad that these days people take to attacking others to feed their own ego's. Keep up the great work!!!

The end result looks great! What drove the decision to try to chemically remove the previous spray job? Do you think the old coat would have impacted adhesion of the new?
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry 5 ай бұрын
That's the exact reason. I could tell it was a very cheap spray paint that was used so I didn't want a reaction where there would be bubbling or poor adhesion of the new coating. If it was the original factory coating I would have been inclined to clean it really well without removing.

Hi Perry. Awesome photography, editing, and commentary.! I love how the image stabilization processes the video. I very much appreciate you making these videos. I should be taking delivery on my own Tomahawk in a few weeks. I will see if I can match your deft control of gentle touchdowns and elevator control once I get used to the plane. I would be interested to know a few things in comments or future video..... What GoPro mount are you using to attach to wing? Is it the standard GoPro lens or a wider angle 180 degree lens? What mount for your iPad are you using in this video? and which size iPad is it? Do you find it is intruding on your windshield vision or pretty much out of the way? I am weighing the pro's and con's of wheel mount vs. kneeboard mount vs. windshield mount. Looking forward to your next video.
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! You will have a great time with your Tomahawk. I am very happy I bought one. As for the GoPro mounts, the ones I use were purchased from Aircraft Spruce made for aircraft use. The exterior one I use most is made to clamp onto tie-down rings and has secondary securement pins so nothing can unscrew. I have another one made by NFlightCam that is made to use one of the screw positions for a wing fairing (wind tunnel tested and FAA compliant). My interior ones use the RAM ball mount and clamp system. As for the iPad, I'm using a very old and cheap iPad Mini 2 and mounted with the RAM suction cup and ball mount system but I am looking to upgrade to a newer Mini and get Foreflight. I think anything larger than a Mini will take up too much room in the cockpit. As it stands, I have juggled the positioning between mounting on my yoke, knee pad, copilot side of panel, and the left side of the windscreen. I like the windscreen best because it doesn't block my vision and doesn't require a large head movement to incorporate looking at the iPad in my instrument scans. I don't like the yoke mount much because I don't like the feel of the extra weight on the controls. I flew my first 150 hours mostly reliant on paper sectionals strapped to my knee and had the iPad tucked away on the copilots side but am just starting to bring the electronics more into the game.
