As usual with aviation ownership, it's time to pull my wallet across the coals once again!
If you are thinking about owning your own aircraft this is another regular expense you will need to plan for. It's time for my 2 year (24 month) recertification of my transponder, altimeter, encoder and ELT on my 1979 PA38-112 Piper Tomahawk. Follow along while I go through the "why" and the "how" to get that done.

This is the first video I've seen from your channel, within about 3 minutes it was pretty clear this particular PA-38 is going to have a great life ahead of it. You love this thing like it's brand new :-) I'm impressed those avionics are still passing the tests some 40 years after manufacture - built to last. Stay safe sir! :-)

Thank you! When I first bought the plane I went through the whole thing with my AME and brought it up to the level I wanted where I can freely take my friends and family on trips. Now it's at the point where I have a full maintenance planner/tracker set up in an Excel spreadsheet and try to make little improvements along the way to make it nicer on every flight! Overall it's a low time airframe (around 3300 TT) and engine has less than 600 hrs since major overhaul. She's a nice bird!

I really am lucky. It was a 3 hour drive each way but thankfully I had family nearby to visit and make the day shorter

Thanks for the great video, Perry. I will be going through this with my Tommy next year. BTW - when I bought my plane this winter, the previous owner had his mechanic install the Sterling nose link I bought, and it definitely improved the nose shimmy for a while, but it is slowly returning. Maybe sometime we can chat off-line on email about the tolerances and shims. You seem like a very capable engineer / mechanic type of guy.

If not, search "Piper Tomahawk Owners" on Facebook and you'll find the group. There is a wealth of knowledge there including a files section with the maintenance manual, parts manuals etc
