Landscape photography vlog on location at Yew Tree Tarn, Tarn Hows and Coniston Water in the Lake District. In this video I share 5 things that I have learnt since buying my first DSLR back at Christmas 2005.
1. don't obsess over kit
2. get out there
3. slow down
4. love the edit
5. be social
You can get in touch via Instagram or Twitter at @ChrisSalePhoto
I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

What is the most valuable lesson that you have learnt over the years? What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting landscape photography?

Excellent advice Ozzy - not just for photography but for life in general.

I have not had my DSLR for long having been away from photography for years. I think that your tip of slow down is good because it gives you time to think about the end photograph and how to go about getting it. Do not be frightened to show on line. Almost every comment I have had has been positive criticism. Ask for advice, generally I have found that people like to help others improve. I know you asked for one tip, I hope you will be charitable as it is Christmas :-)

I agree about critique in general - we should be mindful to treat praise and critisism in the same way. Find your own way is excellent advice - to do that you need to be your own critic.

Not to get my tripod out before I'm absolutely sure from where to shoot and not to take a picture for getting a picture's sake. Composition is key.

One piece of useful advice I have earned is "There is always a worthy composition to be had within a few feet of where ever you are.

Most valuable lesson for me is one you mentioned, to slow down. I'd also say that striving for perfection is a bad path. For me, striving for perfection is frustrating, leads to missed opportunities and will have you chasing gear forever. I thinking striving for improvement is a better attitude. My advice for someone starting is to share your images with as many people as you can. Feedback is an amazing motivator. One last thing for you, is consider adding to your outro, a reminder to click the bell to be notified of new posts. For those of us subscribing to a lot of channels, videos can sometimes be missed. The bell feature notifies me when a new video gets posted. Once again, I really enjoy your channel.

Hi Steve - I agree with you, you don't always need sunshine. You can create some wonderfully moody shots in overcast conditions if you pick your location carefully. Lightroom does such a good job of subtle HDR these days. Did you ever use PhotoMatix? That could produce some really awful results!

I'm a bit late, Chris; but Happy New year. I really enjoy your videos. They always leave me with something to think about or consider for my own photography. They really have helped me along with improving my Landscape photography. Which, by the way is my favorite of all the genres. Thanks again. The most valuable lesson I have learned over the years, is to make an image, not just take a picture. Which goes side by side with telling a good story with the image.

Great video with some great tips Chris. Your point about slowing down really resonates with me. I have gone from taking some good pictures with point and click cameras to being a little overwhelmed with all the features on a Mirrorless Sony A6300. Patience and not obsessing with the kit are paramount. Thanks for sharing
@ChrisSalePhoto
@ChrisSalePhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil - cameras can be a little overwhelming to start with sometimes, keep plugging away and you'll get there. I helped me to develop an in camera workflow so I went through the same process for every shot. I might do a video in the future but put simply it's compose, focus, set the aperture, add filters, set the shutter speed and then fire away!

Cheers Jamie - couldn't agree more - I've learnt so much from watching other photographers on KZfaq but there's nothing like wanting to create your own vlogs to give you the motivation to get out and shoot. You should definitely visit England at some point Richard, there is so much to photograph. You've got mountains, lakes, ancient woodland, historic cities and some of the finest coastlines in the world and all packed into a relatively small space. And then there's Scotland...

You're lucky to have Lake District within your reach, I could see a couple of nice compositions just from watching the video. It's really tough to keep the spirit up where I live, the sky has been overcast for months, rain day in day out (with few and very short breaks in between, which for some reason always seem to coincide with my working schedule). I'll be in Lake District in June though and I'm already looking forward to it.

Over the last few years we've had wonderful Mays and Junes but the weather has gotten progressively worse as the summer has gone on. I hope you get some decent weather. I find June to be the hardest to shoot in the Lakes - I have to get up around 02:30 to be on location for sunrise and everything is so green!

I'll be staying in Windermere and have a car, so hopefully won't have to get up that early. Green is fine with me, will be a welcome change from the grey mass up in the sky I've had to endure for a couple of months now ;) I checked average temperatures the other day, should be around 12-16 degrees Celsius that time of year. Got some family down in Clanfield (slightly north of Portsmouth), they warned me that the weather in the Lakes could change any minute so I'll be prepared. Can't be any worse than the weather over here in Germany.

Great video Chris, have really enjoyed your work over 2017. Advice for someone starting out would be to stay away from photography forums (they're full of armchair experts) and just get out there with whatever gear you have and enjoy the freedom of being outdoors.

I couldn't agree more mate - only three things really matter in photography: composition, light and exposure. You can only really learn about those when you are out in the field.

Sage words, Chris. Of the 5, I say, for me, it's ssllllooooww down. I've enjoyed your videos this year and especially your relaxed delivery style. One piece of advice from me, don't just watch/read about photography, do the same for all art forms: visit museums and art galleries. Cheers.

Nice and easy vlog with some relaxing misty images over the Tarn, just the thing to sit and watch and chill out for 10mins. The main lessons I have learnt as a new comer is that there is no substitution for getting out there and practicing. Additionally, for me at least, planning my days shooting has help tremendously, there are some great photo guide books out there and some of the content on You Tube is really inspirational. Finally....aim to take less bad pictures ironically that will automatically mean you have more good ones (and less time deleting failed shots at post processing). Sorry that’s 3 bits of advice, great vlog, have a great new year and I look forward to seeing more.

Three great tips there Gary. You say you are a new comer, how long have you been into photography? As I say I have been doing it for 12 years and I reckon for 10 of those I would only go out if conditions were perfect. Now I try not to pay too much attention to the weather forecast and head out regardless - as a result my portfolio has improved dramatically.

I got my first decent camera (EOS 70D) just two and a half years ago, and that was primarily for airshows, at about the same time I rediscovered a love for the great outdoors. (Many years ago......I used to do a lot of mountaineering and walking, Lakes, Scotland, Snowdonia and sometimes farther afield). Now I'm lucky enough to be able to revisit the places I used to enjoy along with some new ones and look at them with a different intention. I'm trying my hardest not to be a fair weather photographer, but when its miserable outside its so tempting to have another cuppa and enjoy the view from indoors.

As a 'non photographer', just someone who enjoys taking shots, I learnt off another 'non photographer', my dad, who just like me, wanted to capture memories. He started in the late 50s taking shots that were transferred onto slides, which you would then view via a handheld device, which you had to look up to the light to see the actual shot. He then progressed onto taking 35mm cine film, which just before he died, I got transferred to DVD after previously transferring the original to video. He always took photos as well, almost up till his death a few years back. Funny thing about the slides, I got them and all his old 35mm film tapes and I got the slides transferred onto a DVD and was astonished how vibrant some of the colors were today, almost 55 years later! The only bit of advice I remember him telling me was, never shoot into the sun, which is funny, as a lot of my favorite shots now are with the sun in front of me. Not full sun but with the sun just peeping over the sunrise or breaking through a tree. Was a bit worried mind, at the late arrival of the selfi, thought it was been binned, had to LOL when you put on the Christmas hat and had a quick look to the left to see if anyone was looking! The Selfi and the Parkamoor shot were real good, loved the sky and the reflections of light in the lake. Cheers Alan

Hi Alan - I've never used film but I remember my Dad and Uncle shooting 35mm slides - the dynamic range was far better than today's digital cameras. I agree with his advice about not shooting into the sun, for me it creates images with too much contrast. Landscape photographers often try to keep the sun off to one side - strong side lighting creates an almost 3D effect.

Enjoyed todays video again Chris , thanks for showing. Dabbled with photography for a few years now and because it was limited to 36 exposures in the film days. Perhaps 6 exposures on a day out things were very slow. Frustratingly Too slow.But I agree slowing down with digital and thinking what mood or atmosphere you want to develop with the conditions available ,asking yourself why you are at the chosen area for. Every time you go out take a camera, just in case you spot something.

Cheers Rob - digital photography can be a bit of a double edged sword - the temptation to "spray and prey" can lead to bad habits. David Dixon talked about connecting more with a landscape in order to take better photos in one of his recent videos - did you you see it?

Happy Christmas Chris and thanks for producing these videos to share your photographic journey with us. My love of photography also began at Christmas time when my parents gave me my first camera a Polaroid Instamatic in 1975. Can I ask you a question please Chris (sorry if it's not appropriate here) but I have been thinking about joining Instagram for ages. How do you feel about cropping your images to Instagram's square format? I cannot bring myself to start butchering my 3 x 2 and 4 x 5 etc after the careful consideration at the time of composing the photo.
@ChrisSalePhoto
@ChrisSalePhoto 6 жыл бұрын
1975 Andy? You don't look old enough! These days you can post in almost any ratio to Instagram. However, I still use a square crop. It doesn't work for all images but if you have a strong focal point you can usually get away with it. Instagram 'experts' will tell you that 5x4 (portrait) is the most effective ratio. If you do join Instagram ping me your username so I can check out your stuff.

Very nice video man! Enjoyed it a lot, has a really relaxing feel to it, the music place a big part in that. But, don't you maybe think that some photos don't have a clear subject?
@ChrisSalePhoto
@ChrisSalePhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Wahid - Glad you enjoyed the video, you're right, the music is key - I use Epidemic Sound and try to use a new track for every video. Sometimes it takes as long to find the music as edit the rest of the video. You have a point about a strong subjects - most photographs benefit from a main focal point one which the eye can rest. However, at certain locations and in certain conditions I try to capture more of the atmosphere and feel of a place. Does that make sense?
@WahidFayumzadah
@WahidFayumzadah 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the reply. Yes, it totally makes sense. I also don't think that you always really need to have a subject / strong focal point, though usually I personally do find it more pleasing. I just wanted to know your thoughts about that hehe, so thank you. Happy New Year to you.

Great lessons Chris. Having got my start with film photography, I understand the importance of "slowing down." With only 24 exposures, you can't afford (literally) to take random images. As I moved more into digital over the last couple years, I've been guilty of moving too fast because I'm limited only by the size of my card. But the tip is an important one. Also, I agree about the gear and have no intention of enhancing what I have until I master composition - it's still my Achilles heal of sorts. Thanks for the history lesson on the Lake District - always wondered why the hills were so manicured. LOL. Happy 2018 and see you soon. (btw - untitled # 2 was smashing).

@ChrisSalePhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Miguel. I think your composition will be really helped if you practice slowing down. Do me a favour, next time you're out limit yourself to 3 compositions as suggested in the video, really focus on getting the best 3 images possible and let me know how you get on. I'd be interested to hear if it made a difference, it did for me. The best piece of advice regarding composition that I can give is to simplify as much as possible. For me I start to have problems when I try to include too much in the frame. My favourite landscape photographer is Michael Kenna - his minimalist approach is a huge inspiration to me.

Another good piece of advice - of course since the invention of the smart phone most of us carry a camera with us everywhere we go. Be careful around Thirlmere mate, the road around the back is closed and a lot of the forest is out of bounds following the high winds we had recently. You must come away with at least 1 shot of the boathouse and if you are in the Ullswater area I highly recommend the beach at Glencoyne, one of my favourite locations.
