If you're thinking about buying some shrubs, trees, or flowers, now is a good time to check out the big box stores for some really good deals. We found 2 Lowe's stores in West Virginia with 75% off sales. Of course, we loaded the truck !

I check the fruit tree selection each season towards then end when they're practically giving them away but they're always out. Would be perfect to find a plum or apricot tree at a decent price someday.

Bobby: We have been doing this for years and it saves a lot of money. Give the blue spruce a lot of room they do get big and wide. At 1/4% interest at the bank you got 75% interest on your purchases. If the plants are pot bound just take a razor blade knife and make 3 or 4 vertical cuts just through the circular roots and they will send out new root growth where they were cut when planted. Otherwise the roots will just keep growing in a circle and limit the growth. Great video on how to help people save money! Bernard

if you know anyone that has figs and/or grapes you can give them a little 'haircut' at this time of year - cut the brown woody bits into about 1 foot sections, making sure you remember which end is the tip end, stick them in a pot of dirt about 6" in with one leaf node at least in the ground... in the spring you'll have little trees... i also take blueberry cuttings, mulberry, apple, hops - anything in my yard that gets cut, gets shoved in dirt - if it lives, it lives, if not, it was destined for the compost. leave it out all winter, or in a cold greenhouse so it doesn't get real wet... the only problem is what to do with 50 baby fig trees!

We just got our first Lowes near here a couple of years ago and I hadn't been there until last October. They didn't have much left, but I got two delphiniums for $5, they were a little beat up by the time I got them, but one survived the winter and looked awesome all summer. This year I waited too long though, and they had nothing left, but most places didn't since they got hit by the same snow in September that the rest of us did.

MHP, Hey buddy, I messaged here as it is your newest vid. I have a few questions but I would first like to thank you for all you do for folks by sharing your knowledge and the sharing you do of your harvests that the good Lord blesses you to grow. I take the most joy from growing each year and giving neighbors and old folks fresh vegetables and seeing them smile. You are a blessing to folks with the knowledge and the kindness you show your neighbors. Thanks, I appreciate what you do. Ok, Im going to set up a small dutch bucket system the deck for a little fun while waiting for the dirt gardens to take off. I am running no lids and have a disconnect to stop the return to the resv. in rainy weather. Will rain do anything besides dilute the resv and ph? Also, will the black supply lines the drips lines come from need to be hidden from the sun? Thanks again for all you do and teach folks about, youre a good ol southern dude to do what you do for so many folks. From one southern boy to another, God Bless! Josh North GA PS- back to the dirt gardens, got 3 going this year and helping friends in theirs with sharing knowledge. Man its work but its rewarding! Take care.

Sometimes Walmart does have good deals. I bought a 139cc MTD Yard Machines front tine tiller a couple years ago for $199 on clearance. I think they are normally about $329. That was the best $199 I ever spent on my yard. Not only does it do great for tilling up this Georgia clay, But it also does great for tilling up areas you want to landscape around your house. It also does wonders for tilling up "circles" for the purpose of planting trees planting trees. You can get a nice 3ft circle tilled up in no time at all.

Always ask for the garden center manager and make him a ridiculously low offer for scraggly or poor quality plants. A friend bought 16 blackberries at the local Walmart by mentioning to the manager that it was too late to plant them... they probably would not survive anyway... and just to take them off their hands, he would buy every plant they had for $1 each. After a couple of choruses of "Well, I don't know..." My friend walked off with a truckload of grapes and blackberries that were originally priced from $7.99 to $12.99. He went back a week later and bought 9 fruit trees originally priced from 19.99 to 24.99 for $3 each! ALL of the plants lived and are thriving! *_Always_* bargain with the manager for money off!

Another great video as always, but I would like to encourage everyone to plant more fruit and nut trees around their homes. Oaks look nice, but can you imagine if all homeowners and cities planted at least half of their trees with trees that can feed the hungry and help our obesity epidemic? Your figs and kiwis are a great start, but apples can store for months and nothing beats fresh peaches, plums, apricots, persimmons, pears, pomegranates, grapes, berries, pecans, walnuts, almonds, and countless others too numerous to list. A good place to start is LeggCreekFarm where 10 fruit trees start at $72.50. Just one, less than $10, Sam Houston peach tree I bought for the front of my house has produced over 1000 peaches the last two years, and it is only 4 years old.
