You can't expect great optical performance at f/0.95 with a lens below 1000$. Similar story with full frame Mitakon speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 and probably with the forthcoming full frame Laowa Argus 45mm f/0.95. Full frame lenses with really good optical quality are the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH at around 13,000$ and the Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens at around 8,000$ A cheap and optically good f/0.95 full frame lens is impossible.

But certainly good enough for 7S3.

doesnt have to be super sharp to look good imo. That flaring can be obnoxious though

I had to go find a comparison between the Leica and the Mitakon. The Leica is better for sure, but not by THAT much. At f/0.95, the centre of both lenses look nearly identical, but the Leica's corners are slightly better. Same for the contrast, Leica has a bit better contrast. When stopping down, the Leica's corners stay well ahead. At f/1.4, the Leica is better than the Mitakon in all aspects, really. But corners aside, the IQ difference isn't that big if you remember the price difference. From f/4 onwards, the difference between both lenses becomes more negligible. The major comparison to be made, in my book, is shooting them wide open - there is no reason to buy either lens is you aren't shooting them wide open most of the time. A more interesting, and likely more drastic comparison, would be between the Mitakon, the Leica and the Nikon. I suspect that the Nikon would absolutely trounce both the Mitakon and the Leica. Don't know why I was commenting that. Just found it interesting. The price point matters for sure. But for the money, I would buy the Mitakon before the Leica, and if I was financially at ease but had to think hard about how to spend my money, I think that the Nikon might be worth the expenditure, but not the Leica. Since we were talking about 35mm lenses, similarly, I thought that the Sony 35mm GM was worth the upgrade over my old Sigma ART 35mm, and even over the newer Sigma 35mm f/1.2. Those f/0.95mm lenses have beautiful renderings, but the GM series is just more practical and optically clean.

I shot a feature film using primarily the Mitakon Speedmaste f/0.95 and it worked beautifully. That lens is incredibly underrated. This Laowa looks like an awesome addition to a set of super fast, character driven, budget friendly FF lenses.

How did you remove the lens hood? I have this lens and It doesn't look like it is removable, but in your video there are shots with and without it. Please let me know. Thanks!

Funny, I found a Venus Laowa 33mm f/0.95 on B&H. But, I guess the 35mm version is too new to show up. Would you recommend the 35mm over the 33mm?
@TTWGD32 жыл бұрын
The 33mm is APS-C and the 35mm full frame, so that would likely make your decision
@micahaka3 ай бұрын
@@TTWGD3regardless there will be crop right? So both lenses will act at around a 40-50mm?
