Tipping is a huge part of working in the hospitality industry in Las Vegas and it is something that you really want to keep in mind on your next Las Vegas Vacation. At most hospitality jobs-doorman, bartenders, waitresses, security, hosts, taxi drivers, limo drivers, etc-the base pay generally is minimum wage. The rest of their money comes from tips received from customers. This means that a sizeable portion of their income varies, and is based on your generosity. The concept behind tipping is that it incentivizes workers to provide better service because they feel that giving better service will yield a higher return for their labor in the form of a tip. Just know that if you do not tip, then people may be inclined to downgrade the service that they provide you.
Las Vegas Vacation Tip: Take a little time to learn about tipping in Las Vegas before you arrive here. Even if tipping is a very unfamiliar concept to you, at least make an effort to learn the local custom. If you tip people and take care of them at their job, then they are far more likely to provide you with better service wherever you’re at in Las Vegas.

housekeeping waits on the DND signs to clean last or end of day, if the sign is still up, they will still attempt to knock and if no answer will go in many times anyway to clean, unless you call down to housekeeping and let them know you do not want roomservice that day ... if you do that, they will mark you off their list, otherwise do not trust a dnd sign alone is going to protect you from a cleaning particularly if you are not in the room when they knock late afternoons

Mary A as a former housekeeper, I can tell you that that is incorrect. If your DND sign is up, and is still up at the end of the day then nobody will service your room. Often times they will slip a note under your door to let you know that the room was not serviced due to DND sign, just incase you forgot to take it down. There are times when they will call down and let you know that they do not want to be serviced and the housekeeper will be made aware of that, and regardless if there is a DND on that door it will not be serviced. If someone enters your room to clean it when you have a DND on it they should be reported.

If you don’t tip servers you are like literally robbing them. They don’t get a pay check- the 2 bucks an hour go into taxes for tips (they are tipped at 12%), and PAY OUT in form of tip outs- meaning their sales NOT TIPS figure how much they pay others. This means if you fail to tip 20% on a 100 dollar bill, the irs taxes them at 12 bucks INCOME for your table (they should be getting 20 because) they then get between a 3% and 10% tip out on thay sale meaning they pay other workers 3-10 bucks for just your one bill- at 100 dollars. Tip or don’t go out to eat Q15% for a bad server and 18-22% for ranging from okay to did good, to great and even more if beyond your expectations. The more a region does this affective let the better restaraunts you’ll have. Remember if you go to the same restaraunt where you jipped a server... well they have a lot of power over your service and can ruin your night. If you constantly go out to a restaraunt and are known to tip 5 bucks on an 80 dollar bill or 10 on a 100... they can easily ignore you make you wait spit in your food, and just do a plethora of things from okay to flat out illegal and you’ll never know. I personally am fine with servers focusing on other tables if the guest is a known bar tipper despite saying great service and trying to say a nice good bye. Food spitting draws the line but hell yeah you got 10 on a 114 dollar bill last time? Focus on the tables that do tip correctly let the other person wait, you aren’t making money and likely losing money with them anyway.

A lot of employees in Las Vegas are crybabies. If you're paying $150 a night for a room where the sheets don't get washed every single day and ONLY after you leave you shouldn't need to tip housekeeping. It's never on CUSTOMERS to TAKE CARE of employees and PAY their wages.. That's stupid. If they're not being payed right QUIT or take it up with management. Same thing if I buy a beer which I wouldn't at the bar, that 1 beer is $12. You're telling me the employee receives nothing for it and the only way he'll make anything is if I tip on top of the $12 for beer? Come on..... However if someone is awesome at their job or just goes out of their way for guests, they deserve to be tipped and believe me they make a good living and they get their tips. It's people who do the bare minimum that cry and complain.

Yes they are underpaid. Nevada is a hire at will state so with tipping minimum wage is almost the standard and they’ll hire too many so everyone gets -32 hours so employees are partimers meaning no benefits, 401k, and the union are paid off by deals they secretly make with the casinos. “Who ever holds the purse wields the power” Who is going to invest their own money to crack this down and why would the industry hurt their pockets to let outsiders know the game? In Las Vegas the House always wins.

Salary is negotiated between the employee and the employer; if the job is union---and the majority of service jobs in Las Vegas are union---then the union negotiates for the employee. Simply because wages are not what the employee THINKS she DESERVES does NOT place the onus on me to make up for any perceived shortage. If a service employee withholds service or gives shoddy service based on tipping, then that IS extortion, an apt word that poster Jonathan Nowak suggested. When I visit Las Vegas it is for five days, and I normally tip housekeeping at the end of my stay . . . after I know the level of their service. Genuinely friendly and//or cheerful service employees always get a generous tip from me, not because of the particular service they provide, but because they treat me AS a guest, rather than as a bothersome gnat that disturbs their reverie. The owner of this channel describes Las Vegas as a "tipping culture;" if that is true, then perhaps it is time to review this tipping expectation that seems to be in their water supply.
@gold-un7pu

Coming from someone who works as a waitress that is a terrible thing to do! Going to Vegas nowadays is very expensive and a lot of people don't have the money to tip every worker they come across. I will be leaving a do not disturb sign on my door the whole time I'm in Vegas. That way I don't have to feel bad about not having the extra money to tip and also will not have to worry about some person going through my things. The Casino is expecting the customers to pay almost all of its workers wages pretty much. That is disgusting and the casino should be the ones called out not the non tippers. Also I am fairly sure that the maids, doormen, valet, etc. get paid at least minimum wage. If not that is entirely illegal because there is no way for their employers to know that they are making up for their wage in tips because they would all be cash.

This what Shannon Winnie said, is EXACTLY what I do. Very wise indeed. My wife and I use multiple toothbrushes when on special trips like Vegas, etc. Any belongings we have that can be damaged, used to clean with or seek revenge with, we lock in the safe, or put it in our suit case which has a padlock on it. Don't take chances folks, some people are just morbid in general. I want to follow up with what I said above. I FIRMLY believe in tipping and tipping well for services rendered, especially if they go above and beyond, however, if a poor job is done, don't expect a tip. Even if you do tip, you never what kind of person you are getting that comes into your room and has access to your personal belongings. Best advice, as Shannon said, and as I do lock it up!

Watched a few of your videos and I appreciate you doing this. I'm from PA, just got back from my 6th trip to Vegas today. Lucky number 7 will be when I stay! I had a discussion about tipping, specifically in Vegas, earlier. The service I receive in Vegas is out of this world compared to the small town here. No one is happy, therefore no one cares. I normally tip between 17-20% because I understand that's where income comes form in waiting... but here? I gave more because the service was top notch at both restaurants (of polar opposites). This town relies on tourism. To others: If you are not willing to tip, then go get fast food.

Thanks for the support! I have a video coming later about customer service in Las Vegas. I feel that it is better here overall than what I experienced pretty much anywhere in California. I think that the area being so dependent on tourism has a residual effect in the local community.

I tried to tip both of them, but Security would not take my tip so I gave it to the slot attendant. On my very first trip to Vegas, I lost my purse (left it at a machine I was playing on - really stupid) and a housekeeping person found it and took it to Security. All my money for my trip, plus my camera, room key - everything - was in that purse. I got everything back, but I didn't tip security or even give them money for the housekeeping person who was so honest. I have always felt really, really bad about not offering a tip for something that was so important to me. My husband and I are usually very generous with tips, but I was so flustered and upset at the time, I was boo-hooing all over the place - it was very embarrassing! but I still feel bad about that one time I didn't tip when I probably should have.

I like your vids and presentation. I've come to terms with American tipping culture, especially in a place like Vegas. I used to hate it, and lots of visitors from other countries I know of course did not understand it or found it mysterious; but now I tell them (and myself) to just work it into the cost of everything ahead of time, and get the feeling of magnaminty and being a generous American mensch that can come with the gesture of tipping. I also prep myself mentally beforehand by thinking that everything is underpriced priced by 20%, because I have to cover the salary portion.

Yikes! I know like people in the food and beverage service industry can be what everyone else would consider underpaid in terms of the legal minimum wage (so I agree they definitely need tips) but I thought everyone else (like housekeeping and security staff) gets paid a regular wage. That kinda sucks though because the first few times I stayed in Vegas, although I tend to keep my DND sign up for a few of the days, I had just planned to leave one big tip on the morning I left instead of a smaller daily tip (Vegas is about as extravagant as I go and I don't really ever stay in hotels any other time). It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I started leaving smaller daily tips and it was only because the maid I had was so nice and so friendly but when I was getting ready to leave my room to go out and about in the morning, I overheard her mentioning to her co-worker that she was off on the morning I would be leaving so I realized that if I waited, she wouldn't actually get her tip. I'm so glad that happened because she was so nice but now I'm even more glad! I'm also horrified because that is such a petty thing to do that I would question the integrity of ANYTHING that lady does in any aspect of her life. I try to be a decent tipper in general but I think I might start hiding my toothbrush lol

Sorry, but I still tip depending on the level of service provided. If I am at a buffet and I finish my meal and the waitress still doesn't come to get my drink orders, she is not getting a full tip. If it takes 30 minutes for Valet to bring over my car, he is getting a few quarters.

Thank you for this great informative video. For those of us not from USA, 15 to 20% tip is something that we find outrageous. We do tip but only because we have had a great service and certain never more than 10%. I guess in USA hotel and restaurant workers earn over 60% of their wages via tips. I am appalled that employers get away with this and expect employees to earn via tips most of the time. This video told me that I should tip more generously than ever.

I always assume the worst of housekeeping which is unfair but it literally allows me to sleep well at night. If I'm just staying two nights I'll usually decline maid service. I also post the dnd sign. Anything I don't want messed with gets returned to the suitcase everyday and I padlock the suitcase. I often sleep on my side with my face against a pillow. I'll bring a towel from home to put on the pillow while I'm sleeping. There have been times when I have returned to a room while the maid is straightening the beds and the pillows will be on the floor. I'm sure most in housekeeping are hygienic but by doing a few simple things I don't need to be concerned if someone does something shady.

Also Jacob I usually very much don’t your videos but feel you came up short on this one. Definitely! You can join that rest of the huge NYC transplant population out here. I swear Las Vegas is like a second home for New Yorkers. I've worked in a tipping industry, so I tip whenever I think it is customary, Dealers, Doormen, Bartenders, Room service, maids, Cocktail servers, taxi or uber. But one thing I never thought of is tipping cashiers when you cash out. Reason I say that, I was watching a video of Dana white cleaning out the palms, then throwing down $500 bucks or so to the cashiers. Granted on the scale of things, I would be throwing $5 dollars to the cashier. But is tipping the cashier customary too? I have been to vegas 20 to 25 times, I have never tipped the cashier.

This might be random, but there was a story where a guy and his wife were staying at some hotel (i don't know which one) on the strip during a really busy time. Well, when they entered their room and found this awful smell. They complained to the front desk and the rest of the hotel was booked, so they sent the family on a free lunch while they had room service try to remove the smell. They came back from their lunch and the smell was still there. They complained again, and turns out the rest of the hotels on the strip were booked too. So, they sent the family off to do some of those famous destinations in the city while they once again tried to clean the room. They came back and AGAIN the smell was there, so the male was furious and tried to find out what it was, he lifted up the mattress and found a dead woman under there. Shocking & gross, but how the hell did room service miss it? Multiple Times?

So basically anywhere I go where it's service related I should tip? I don't get tips at my work. Walmart cashier's, fast food restaurant employees don't get tips, a ton of service jobs don't get tips. Why do waiter expect tips? What makes them better? Tips are earned and should not be expected. It's a bonus, like a normal job. If you perform above of what is expected and do awesome job you get a bonus. Bringing me a cup of water with my meal it's part of the job nothing else. I will not be tipping anymore, last few tips I left at restaurants I didn't even get a thank you for tipping and I was a generous tipper. All they do is run your card bring you a check and walk away. I have only heard a thank for the tip few times. Where a server came up and actually thanked me for tipping him/her. BEST TIP to anyone in the business where they expect tips. DON'T EXPECT THEM, ITS A BONUS AND I WOULD SUGGEST BEFORE YOU START SERVING SOME ONE BE UPFRONT. Let them know, I am not expecting any tips, but if you like my service I would be grateful for anything you leave me and thank your client upfront. Believe me you will end up making more money 💰💰💰💰.
