Culturedog Sam Hatch risked crossing the streams and finally trapped a copy of the 1989 Criterion Collection CAV Special Edition of Ivan Reitman’s seminal special effects comedy Ghostbusters (Spine No. 75 / Catalog No. CC1181L).
Split over four standard play sides, this comic take on modern parapsychology and ‘ghost hunting’ is just as funny as it was 30-plus years ago. Following Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and newcomer Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) as they terrorize New York City in the process of hunting and trapping rogue spectres, this tasty combo of loose, anarchic improv comedy and state-of-the-80s-art visual effects delivers a solid “blockbuster” feel and presages the present-day glut of reality-TV ghost programming.
Toss in great supporting work from Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts and William Atherton, mix with a jaunty Elmer Bernstein score and top with some grade-A visual effects from Richard Edlund - and you’ve got a winning combination that has been rightfully deemed worthy of the Criterion Collection treatment.
Supplemented by storyboard-to-film comparisons, deleted scenes, special effects featurettes, vintage “making of” segments, and the entire screenplay in step frame format, this was a “must have” release still sought after by collectors and Ghostbusters fans today.

If I'm buying a disc that I'm told is CAV but is one of those notorious covers like Blade Runner, where the CAV/CLV are identical, I ask for photos, open the gatefold and put today's newspaper in the foreground

Wonderful video my friend! I love this set (it was the first LaserDisc I ever purchased when I started collecting in 1995). Getting Ernie Hudson to sign it this weekend at a ComicCon. Ha ha. Looking forward to more vids!

+spida1a Thanks so much!! Always cool to meet some more LD fans from back in the day! That's great that you're getting Ernie Hudson to sign it - it must be a cool conversation piece at cons. I'm sure people get used to signing DVDs and VHS tapes all day, so a LaserDisc must really stand out! Thanks again for watching!

Yeah, right? Everyone must have made out like bandits in that scenario! It's funny, I used to hear both songs all the time back in the day and never thought once about them sounding alike. Totally went over my head!

I was able to find a copy for an incredibly cheap price, around 4 dollars. This is the 5th time I got a really good deal on a rare laserdisc. I haven't checked if it's rotted because I'm not at my house right now. The 4K release that came out a few years ago now has some of the used to be exclusive features from the criterion release but there are still some that haven't been ported onto new releases.

Thanks! I'd meant to rewatch it for the June 8th anniversary yesterday, but got wrapped up in video editing. Hoping to spin it up in the next day or two though.

Hello, I was wondering how does this edition add up compared to the first DVD edition? Is there the Video commentary as well as the music video? I know the deleted scenes contain only two and contain lots of behind the scenes footage as well as stills. Which would you prefer?

Is this edition known as a rotter? I just fired mine up today and noticed a bit of speckling on side 4. After I took the gun out of my mouth, I checked LDDB and it's listed as "possible" for rot, but I just wanted to check how likely it is before trying to find another.

Yeah, I hadn't known it to be a major rotter, but I am starting to hear it come up more often as a potential title to worry about. Some of those 3M Criterion pressings can flake out sometimes. I'll check mine though - it's been a few years since I made this video, so it should theoretically still be clean. At least I hope it will be!

I was born in 1984, remember they rereleased it (1 day only) over here the week before I turned 30. With Ghostbusters II being the first movie I can remember seeing in theatres it felt right to end my first 30 years of movie loving by watching the predecessor to what I saw on the big screen first. I've never seen anything on Laserdisc sadly, I can always remember seeing them in stores (especially the Star Wars special editions) but I had no idea what they were. Thinking they were vinyl records at first, I was wondering things like why would they release a soundtrack in widescreen. Now I know more about the format I'm curious I got to admit.

+robhigg2203 I wish I had caught one of those 30th anniversary screenings. Not sure why I couldn't, but I missed it for some reason. I haven't seen II in a long time - there's still some cool stuff in there. I'll have to grab the double-feature Blu-ray I keep seeing. There are definitely some cool Laserdisc information vids on KZfaq if you want to dig deeper into it - it was a really fun format, especially in the 90s. Cheers!

+Culturedog The 30th anniversary rerelease was actually the second one I remember but only a small handful of theatres all of which too far to travel at the time were showing it and I missed it, was definitely glad when the next time round I didn't have to go that far because a lot more theatres were showing it. I'll be sure to check out more videos on Laserdisc as well

Another great video dude...😄... I have the criterion release and also both 1,2 Japan release... The other one I have is the special collection disc which looks the same as criterion but has Columbia pictures logo bottom right ? Was lucky enough to get the stay puft vinyl album for Xmas to add to my ghostbuster collection... Need to do a moving on my stuff..😊

Thanks!! Yeah, fire up a vid - I'd love to check all that stuff out! I tried buying an old ambulance at one point in my teens in the hopes of making my own ECTO-1, but sadly my folks put their foot down and forbade me from investing in a rusty deathrap. I used to have the old Commodore 64 Ghostbusters game too, but I could never figure out how to play the thing..

A good review, but seriously: why would you buy a Laserdisc, if you can get a 4K-Blu ray that has a sensational picture? Why would you watch a movie and turn and change the disc all the time?

The more logic-centric collectors out there would answer something about the color timing on it being closer to the theatrical print or that it has exclusive special features (the latter is actually true in this case), but that angle doesn't hold much water for me. Collecting different eras of media will always have an illogical element to it, and the "it's not available on DVD!" type of collectors are usually just trying to convince themselves that their hobby isn't meaningless. I, however, love duality and am never bothered by the perceived wrongness of something like collecting a video format that started petering out in the 90s. The real answers are a lot messier and complicated. Some people can't handle that. In any case, it's never an either-or situation. It's not "DON'T buy Ghostbusters on Blu-Ray - buy it on LaserDisc because LaserDisc is better!" because I don't believe that being better holds all that much weight. It's not a contest, and if it were, LaserDisc already lost. It's more about inherent value. With physical media (well, pretty much all media) being devalued more and more, the primary mindset is that what is now and current is the best; therefore, everything that came out before sucks and is embarassing. "I can't believe I used to watch VHS - it sucks so bad!" or "I can't believe I listened to that song in 2015... it's so old and stupid." That sorta thing. Which absolutely devalues everything across the board, including what's presently considered the "best" thing. If one embraces that mindset, then one has to accept that the current best thing also sucks... it's just that we're just too stupid and/or trapped in the present to realize it. So celebrating 4K discs just because they're the new thing is inherently pointless. Celebrating them for delivering an amazing performance and/or being a top-notch representation of a film certainly isn't. So I'm totally down with Blu-Ray. Own tons of them. But, in my crazy world, accepting something as a primo experience today also means accepting that as a hard reality outside of the influence of time. So my primo experiences of the mid-90s were also similarly real, and remain so. Having lived through the LD film buff boom days certainly helps, since I can still remember how much quality they delivered and tap back in to that mindset. The format's drawbacks like side flipping never bothered me back then, when I only had a single-sided player. It just felt like I was manually changing film reels in a way. The quality that the format brought to the table more than made up for any perceived deficiencies. Besides, I have a theory that the people who complain the most about LaserDisc side changes are the ones who pause their Blu-Rays and DVDs every 5 minutes for whatever distraction hits them that moment. Sure, the side breaks on LD are something the viewer has no control over, but again... not much of an issue. So basically, if a quality LD like the Criterion Collection edition of Ghostbusters was an absolutely stunning release in the late 80s/early 90s, it technically still is in a sense. It may not look as amazing on an HDTV, but it retains its inherent value. Time didn't automatically turn it into a horrible product. If I pop it on my old CRT TV, it looks as great as it did many decades ago. If I pop it on my SXRD projector, it certainly doesn't look bad. And the film still entertains me. It's the same with collecting anything - people drive 60s Mustangs when they could have a far technologically superior modern rendition. It's because they can find an inherent value in the older product, which in turn validates the quality of the newer, superior product as well. So I maintain that I love Blu-Ray far more than most people. Because I'll still enjoy it when it's an embarrassing relic of the past. Which everything well eventually become. So why buy a 4K Blu-Ray that has a sensational picture at all? It's actually a 4K Blu-Ray with a mediocre picture according to the consumers of the future.

Culturedog Good answer. I still prefer my original Ghostbusters DVD as it has the video commentary, the trivial subtitle track and the Animated menus, which was not in the rerelease 2005 DVD or even Blu-Rays. The picture is not as good, but it isn't terrible either. If you do ever want to watch the movie with the commentary, get the 1999 DVD.

HR1 The audio yes, but not the video. I am not talking about the pop up trivia feature on Blu-Ray, the text track which was on the original DVD was much different and had different decscriptive information as well as constant backstories of deleted scenes not even on the DVD or Blu- Ray and other info which surprisingly was not covered on the Blu-Ray.

That was the Criterion vibe for a while. Lots of wasted jacket space and a single small photo. At least this one got the logo - most of the times it was a random font for the title. They did finally figure out that they could do cool looking full-jacket artwork. Took a few years though.
