I am Lithuanian living in Denmark, I met a lot of Latvian people working or learning here, and really one thing I can say is the bond we have. Each time I noticed there are Latvians around we instantly made some sort of connection, if its not by words its by respect and acceptance. Can't feel any of this meeting any other people.

I feel very close to Lithuanians and I am proud of it. Language and history are definately the reasons I feel we are brother nations and I always feel at home when I visit Lietuva. 💛💚❤️

Lithuania is a like family member to Latvia. It's kind of hard to explain. Lithuania and Estonia for Latvia is this friendly existence. It's like you feel safe being next to them. We do make jokes about each other but overall it's like family. There is respect for each others borders. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia mostly keep to themselves. So for languages - yes, lithuanian and latvian may sound similar and there are words that we can understand but for the most part we can't speak each others language.

I’m a Latvian and just came home from Lithuania. I was surprised how many Lithuanians words I was able to guess because of their similarity to Latvian. It made my stay in Vilnius very comfortable.

I'm from Latvia and I have to say that Lithuanians are more easier to understand, make friendship and communicate. After so many team-buildings between Baltic states I have realized that Estonians tend to act more arrogant, in some way express their superiority, can't feel them emotionally, different traditions, different way how they look on things and totally different language. I have never understand this stupid joke about slow Estonians, they are fast in decision making, have clear vision and in some way little bit crazy. But these are only details, in general we support every one between Baltic states, we understand that we are small and our only power is in unity.

Sometimes Latvians like to say "Viena tauta divas valstis" - one nation two states. But it is more like wishful thinking. However some medieval travellers used to mention that Lets (Latvians) and Letonians (Lithuanians) speak dialects of the same language. Could be true because the languages began to split in 7th century and up to 15th century still existed transitional dialects. The best way to find out how similar our languages are is to check so called Swadesh list - the list of 100 (or 200) basic and oldest words for Baltic languages (Old Prussian, Latgalian and Samogitian also included).

I'd just like to simplify it even more for foreigners: Geopolitically, all 3 countries - EST, LVA, LTU - are grouped together because of the relatively recent shared history of the most recent XX c. Soviet (Russian) occupation. In addition, they joined the EU and NATO the same year 2004 and entered Eurozone the same decade (2010-2020). Culturally, as mentioned in the video regarding the languages, EST is closer to FIN than LTU+LVA. Similarities. If we look at the last millennium, LTU+LVA come from the Baltic tribes and share a similar language (not mutually inteligible, i.e. we can't understand each other when speaking, but some written words are intelligible). It's similar to the situation with Spanish, Portuguese and Italian languages and cultures. Differences. Religion: EST+LVA - Protestants (Lutherans), LTU - Catholics. In this regard, LTU has more in common with Catholic POL than Protestant LVA. During certain time periods LVA was occupied by Sweden, while LTU was in a Commonwealth with POL. My Grandmother was Lithuanian, and she lived in a Lithuanian-speaking village just south of what is today the Russia/ Lithuania border and used to be the German/Lithuanian border. The Lithuanians in Germany felt closer to Germany than Lithuania though, even though they spoke the same language as the Lithuanians. Their rules for spelling were different and Lithuanians in Germany and Lithuania, therefore, did not read each other's newspapers. She was probably the last generation of Lithuanian Germans, considering the siege of Köningsberg and the rest is history. Last time I visited the Baltic I was talking to my tour guide who was Estonian. He thought that Estonia and Latvia were the closest. Of course not linguistically but in many ways historically they have had a more similar history. Lithuania is to my knowledge the only baltic country that ever was a big empire. As a Swede, the countryside in Estonia and Lativa looks like a slightly more flat version of how it would look in Sweden, while Lithuania looks a bit more exotic. Lithuania also has Klaipeda which still to this day looks quite Prussian.

Interestingly, Latvia once has offered Lithuania to create a joint ethnic state called “Aistija”

Men, I'm living in Netherland together with 10 Lithuania but I'm Latvian. Bralukas 💪 There is a lot of similarity between the languages.

Main difference between Latvia and Lithuania is the differing history and not the shared parts. Lithuania has shared a lot of power with Poland and has been even an independent kingdom for a long time and dominating force in the region. Latvia has none of it and thus is closer to Estonia in that regards. Basically in the "dark ages" Germans, Danes, Russians, Poles ended up to area of Estonia and Latvia to take all and more and put everyone under slavery. That was the case even quite recently thus sparing Lithuania from majority of it. That gave Lithuania a national pride what is much different beast than to Latvians or Estonians.

As a Latvian I can't understand Lithuanians when they are talking, but I understand pretty well written texts in Lithuanian. When travelling to Lithuania, I used to use Lithuanian tourism sites in internet in Lithuanian (not in English or Russian) although I've never learned Lithuanian. Also all necessary public information in Lithuanian on the streets of, say, Vilnius is pretty readable and understandable for me without a dictionary.

Your perspective is unique in a sense. Canada and Latvia share a Hockey connection, since Latvia is the best Hockey team from Baltics. That is one reason why Canadians would have Latvia more on their minds.

I'd put it this way - LV & EE share their history, but LV & LT share their culture. As the christianitys push northwards never really got rid of the old pagan traditions in the Baltics, it can be safely assumed culture means a lot in this region, hence the close connection between them. Also I find it funny how both - latvians and lithuanians - seem to describe the other language as sounding kind of like their mixed with russian.

I am Lithuanian from Samogitia region Near Latvia (40km) and I can understand some words and even read, and understand quite a bit of it even tho never really learnt it or interacted much with Latvians, even some phrases I use are weirdly similar to Latvian

There is one sad thing I have noticed and that is that Latvians and lithuanians (seem to) think that estonians are further away than estonians feel about the other baltics. Most latvians and lithuanians I talk to/listen to think “yeah Estonia is a cool place but I’m way clocer to latvians/lithuanians”. While most estonians (seem to) think that baltics are just as close to Them as the fins. Maby it’s because estonians tend to be more reserved with theyr feelings and not show the Love as mutch Like the uralics that they are but Still to täis day. Every time I talk to a baltic I Walt them to know how mutch love we estonians actually feel deep down but don’t show. So in summary Love you baltics and be nice to eachother

whether you feel closer to Estonians or Lithuanians depends on which border region you are from and whether you have Livonian (līvu) roots.

I'm not from the Baltic States, but I've always been a fan of these cute little countries and I see them as introvert countries (if you can describe a country this way), and just as any introvert they keep close friendship with their friends and neighbors. :) Not to all of them though, because not all of their neighbors are actually friendly, unfortunately

Im (Lithuanian), who had chance to live with Latvians for 5 days. I can say that our languages are different but we have some words that sounds similar and as Samogitian I understood even more words.

As a Latvian I feel overall bigger connection with Estonians historically, all the Livonian states and so on united us more then with Lithuanians I'd say, but, of course Lithuanians being our language brothers they are just as important to Latvia as Estonia. Latvia is like the uniting bridge between Estonia and Lithuania. As for languages, Latvians and Estonians don't really understand each other, but there's quite many shared words as one of languages that formed Latvia is Livonian, a Finnic language just like Estonian. It's also kind of hard to understand Lithuanian but it's possible, overall it feels more Slavic as Latvian has been quite Germanized over the past with German and Swedish influence.

Me as a Lithuanian I can say that I visit Latvia almost every year and there is a joke that if u put a Lithuanian and a Latvian in a room, they could communicate with each other I have a few Latvian friends. And I think that we have similar traditions and architecture.

About that history, first part not really, second part yes. Latvians and Lithuanians had same Pagan history before Northern Crusades. But after those, Latvians and Estonians fell to the German Crusaders, but Lithuanians had their freedom and massive empire, and later they went hand to hand with Polish. And at some points parts of Latvia and Estonia were controlled by Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania/Poland. But then Russian Empire came and took all 3 under it. That's where shared history came back for Latvia and Lithuania (and new for Lithuania and Estonia). Russian Empire, German Empire did some stuff too, Lenin Soviets, Freedom, Stalin Soviets, Nazis, Stalin Soviets again, and then all other Soviet years until the end of Soviet Union, Freedom and present day. (all this kind of simplified)

Latvian here. Can't understand anything that Estonians say but can understand some things that Lithuanians say. Lithuania, due to geography, is the importer for Baltics from EU but Estonia went the tech way and wants to integrate with the more advanced Scandinavian countries. Thanks for making the video!

Latvian sounds like a more modern version of lithuanian. As a latvian I can understand very little when someone speaks lithuanian, but lithuanians can understand latvians quite well.

This region had huge influence from foreigners regarding food for ages (esp. German and Italian and Scandinavian). I think it would be a fair point to note that potatoes [and pork] became such a huge influence in region do to famine like situations, and since these too are easy to grow and makes you full for ours- kinda got stuck with it :D Regarding language: a samogitian (žemaitis, a border region) is able to understand both languages okey-ish. Me, a city person, barely few words :(

I am so sad that we Latvians are not able to talk to Lithuanians each in his own language, because we DO NOT understand each other. Not like Norwegians and Sweeds or Belarussians and Ukrainians, for instance. They simply communicate each in his own language and understand each other perfectly. Our two languages - only Balt languages left - are too different from each other. :(

Lithuanian grammar is more conservative and it shares many words with Polish as they developed together (not influenced each other). Latvian grammar and way of speaking is heavily influenced by Livonian and Russian grammar. There are similar words between those languages too. Biggest example is the softness sound in Latvian and Lithuanian. Lithuania, uses the letter i for softness (Seniai - like Russians would write сеньаи, and the Latvian alphabet would write it - seņai). Latvia uses the symbol , to indicate softness on the letter.

To be quite frank, both Lithuanians and Latvians share some amount of similar words with each other, but they are mostly simple, easy-to-remember and pronounce words. But when it comes to anything more sophisticated, such as complex sentences, the language from either perspective sounds quite foreign to our ears. That is largely due to the fact that the phonetic system of both languages or obviously very different. In terms of Estonian, we share very few similar bonds when it comes to the language use.

I listened to a podcast that had a Linguist who knew Latvian and Lithuanian and she said that most words are very similar. It is simply learning the difference between how words are pronounced (Each language basically thinks the other has a lisp) and from then on, you basically know most of the language if you speak the other. Latvian has influence from Uralic and germanic languages (Such as Estonian, Livonian, and German )and Lithuanian has more influence from Slavic languages (Such as Polish). Both are influenced by Russian aswell.These are the main differences, but other than that, with some difficulty, It is possible to understand the general meaning of whatever one language has written or said by the other.

You asked about if Latvians can understand Estonians. We can not in general. But there are some similar words becouse huge part of Latvia once was home of another Fin-Hungarian language nation Leevi (Līvi) or people of sand. So some words in Latvian is close to Estonian, for example Leevi "Ranki" Estonian "Ringi" Latvian older version "Ranka" modern version "Riņķis" means circle. There are multiple places still having old Leevi tribe names like city Ikšķile in Estonian it would be like Üksküla meaning one village.

As a Lithuanian, I can't really understand Latvian besides of some simple and similar words. I find the language quite funny, though.

As a Lithuanian, I've always felt wayyyy closer to Latvia than Estonia. I always saw Latvia as our brothers, every time I'd meet a Latvian in any sort of video game, my first words would be "BRALIUKAS" (brother in Latvian). Estonia is a cool country too though, but I have to point something out - it's either just me, or they just always seem to be really proud of them being a bit better in terms of economy than us and sometimes it seems like they're trying to flex almost. I'm not talking about politics or something, I'm talking about just speaking with Estonians over the internet. It's kind of annoying sometimes :D But it might just be my experience, I don't know. So don't take this too personally Estonians, you're still really great :D

In Latvia we have more than 5 different dialects in each region, we sometimes can't understand other Latvians.

Regarding the linguistic part - no Latvian and Lithuanian are not mutually intelligible at all. For those who are wondering. 1) Baltic languages are false friends languages, meaning that most of our cognate words, have different meanings. For example Lithuanians say "I want" ("Aš noriu"), while in Latvian that sounds like "I swallowed" ("Es noriju"), or how we say Spalva ("feather, bodyhair") and they say Spalva ("colour") and there are plenty of more examples. But again, that can change, because we always stress the first syllable and they don't. 2) I would presume that If most of us would not know Russian, then this understanding of Lithuanian would be way lower, because many of those words that I don't know, I can pick up from Russian to understand like - Sodas, Mėsa, Sūnus, Grybas, Slyva etc. 3) Finnic influence. I know couple of Finns in Latvia, and Finnish often sounds to me like gibberish Latvian (Many very similar words by sound and not by meaning) - Juosta ("to run") and our Josta ("belt"), or Vasara ("hammer") and our Vasara ("summer"), Nauris ("turnip") and Nauris (my name). And apart from that many of our important words are Finnic loans - Vai ("or"), Maksāt ("to pay"), Puika, Puisis ("boy"), Sēne ("mushroom"), Māja ("house, home"), Kāzas ("wedding"), Laulība ("marriage"), Vajag ("need"), Puķe ("flower"). And also a great part of Latvian swearwords are Finnic loans actually, but I presume I cannot post them in here. So we are kind of standing in the middle, having a mental breakdown, and crying, because we do not understand anyone. Overall, I must say that even though I do not understand Lithuanian almost completely, when I hear It, It gives this warm feeling that it's something similar, known and safe. I don't know how to explain that. And with Estonian - I think that during soviet times our parents for some reason, got the idea that they are strangers or something, but again, I have a very similar feeling towards them, as much as I do for Lithuanians...

LV&LT are brothers. Or sisters for that matter. Well maybe cousins by now. We have fought common enemies side by side as far back as 1236. And while history has taken different paths over the centuries, both countries are obviously still neighbours. So are the people and we value our roots and culture. It does indeed feel like a family if a nation can have one. And then common history has made us even closer than plain neighbours to Estonians as well. To faster recover what was lost during soviet time Estonians targeted their (bigger) brother Finland while Lithuanians stick to their history with Poland. Nevertheless we all steer in the same direction of one Europe, started on the same spot and share rather nordic qualities as societies. Like we all have had elected female leaders by now. Historically during a long winter you couldn't survive with a plain hunting/gatherer skill. Nor alone. Together stronger. And not just that. The North remembers :)

Estonian here. Although Finland has similar language, a lot Estonians work in Finland, and a lot Finns buy beer from Estonia, and among European capitals shortest distance is between Tallinn and Helsinki, we share with Latvians almost 100% of our culture and history. Only difference is that we abandoned christian churches and turned their towers to wifi access points, to worship our new master, God of Internet. Estonian and Latvian languages are from completely different fairy tales indeed, but there are similarities as well: stress on first syllable, long vowels and German loanwords.

I think it's because of Baltic tribes, In battle of Durbe Prussian, Latvian and Estonian tribes rebeled against Crusaders and helped Samogitians (one of Lithuanian tribes) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Durbe so that kinda shows that they had good relations even back in 13th c. After that same unified teritory, similar history and cultural factors made Lithuania and Latvia like brothers (or sisters).

As a Latvian I understand some of simple Lithuanian words. But you can’t compare them like you can’t compare Dutch and German

as a lithuanian I can understand the context of what Latvians are talking. We have some very similar words and both languages have a very similar sound signature in my oppinion. Honestly everytime I hear Latvians speaking I think that the're just drunk lithuanians or something. I think if you put a lithuanian and a latvian in one room they could communicate on a basic level but not much more. But I haven't tried to talk to a latvian before so that's just an oppinion :D

Latvia and it's great love for potatoes - I hear it from foreigners from time to time, but never from locals. We have no some special jokes about potatoes (as foreigners sometimes assume), etc., so it surprises me every time when somebody, say, from America, points it out as something characteristic for our region. Well, we eat potatoes quite a lot, but it has no any special or sacred meaning for us, afaik. :D

Once i worked with Latvian as a lithuanian, and we had BBQ at his place. When he speak Latvian to his family you can kind of understand what he is speaking about. like 40% of words are similar. That's how close they are

Yes i am Lithuanian and yes i agree that our languages are indeed very similar to each other. For example in Lithuanian labas means ''hello'' and in Latvian labs means the same thing. And there are many more similarities that i know of but i can't name all of them right now so i think it's safe to say that both we Lithuanians and they Latvians can agree that we shared a laugh when windows vista came out bcuz vista means ''chicken'' in both languages, so should i say Windows Vista or should i say Windows Chicken?

As to the languages, I grew up in Chicago being taught that if you spoke Latvian, you could understand Lithuanian. There are lots of similarities -- Latvians say "labdien" and Lithuanians say "labas dienas" for "hello." But they are different. Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language, not just Finnish, but also Hungarian being from the same roots. Thanks for the video!
