Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the UK rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.

it does annoy me when the narrator of this video for the Fieldsportschannel says" the sporting community agreed to the voluntary phasing out of Lead". I'm part of the shooting community and I know a hell of a lot of people in the shooting community from air gunners, ratters, clay shooters to crop protectors and Practical shot gunners, I can tell you that not one of the shooters I know agreed to any ban to Lead what so ever, the real shooting community truely knows what a Lead ban would mean for shooting and was never asked, it has just been sold down the river. Voluntary my backside.

Bravo Darrell. Not voted for. Not voluntary, and infact in my circle of shooting friends, no one is in favour of it. Also six of them have boycotted the BASC as a direct result. I personally have not been a member since it was called WAGBI or wildfowlers of Great Britain and Ireland. They offended me as a paying customer back in the day by going against opinion, so I bid them fairwell.

I keep saying the same thing, church roofs are dumping lead oxide into the water course every time it rains, have any surveys looked into this?

I'm still lead pipe fed at my property, with lead flashing on the valleys on the roof. There's still people shooting like myself shooting lead pellets. There's still millions of different contaminants entering the water via roads and industry. I can appreciate concern over lead shot in food but how small a percentage is that in overall food products

Yet another area to concentrate on when we have so many more important things to think about. The anti-gun lobby in the UK seem to have a lot of power, trouble is ruining someones hobby that target shoots but not taking away guns from drug gangs doesnt make much sense !

I really can’t understand the logic for preventing the use of lead ammunition for target shooters. At my range we shoot into a sand berm, all the lead is contained within the range site. The lead is even raked out once it builds up, and then melted down and reused. To me this seems like a sly tactic to make the ownership of firearms harder for the average person, particularly those who want to own historical firearms and cast their own ball ammo. I can understand the logic for lead shotgun ammo more, and there are good products coming to market to accommodate that change, but it looks pretty grim for black powder shooters.

I can't see why clays isn't just shot with steel. Would be a level playing field and clay shooters without a steel proof gun would be an extremely small number.

That's their agenda for sure. Every year it gets harder, more expensive, and a lot more hassle just to own and use firearms. Their end game is no civilian shooters at all. Every year they get closer to this goal.

@RR Continued Elemental lead doesn't occur naturally, it's always bound in oxides. Hence why animals haven't evolved to deal with it.

Why are we even considering banning lead whilst still allowing companies to manufacture cigarettes. Is it really our health the government is interested in? Thousands have died as a result of smoking, how many have died from lead poisoning?

Well you can attach anything to the environment. Let's just say paying taxes is bad for the environment people have to work to pay tax they eat more food and use petrol to travel to place of work . Work has to provide electricity to let people do their jobs so yes paying tax is bad for the environment ! Let's ban taxes everyone cause it's bad for the environment !

If it becomes law..( it will), then that's just about it for all shooting in the UK. No one, other than very wealthy people with deep pockets, will be able to continue with their sport. Tragically, I think we have hit the wall on this one and it has been coming for over a decade, yet the industry have been very slow to make any major changes to design and production. As with all issues we face with our environment, too little too late. Funny that the massive boom in electric vehicles is seen as a great way to help the environment, yet what about the materials required in the design and production of the batteries required? Not lead based, but also not what you can honestly call environmentally friendly or ultimately sustainable. But that will not be on the agenda. Only shooters, taking the final hit from politicians and anti-shooting lobbyists with the power to gain ground through a lead ban. I assume, and would seriously hope and expect to see at the same time, all lead acid batteries will cease production in order to protect everyone involved in their production or use? We must also surely, remove every stained glass window from every church or public building and the lead from every roof, down pipe and gutter on every national trust building in the land? In fact everywhere that any form of lead, can come into contact with either the environment or those who live in it, will have to go. Wow...that should be worth waiting for...yeah, right.

No lead was brought about to help sell game as that was the main reason people were put off eating it. The shooting committee is its own worst enemy they just don’t want to move with the times. Things are and have changed with all the woke generation and that’s that if we don’t move we will get left behind. But saying that the shooting body’s BASC NGO and so on don’t seem to put up much of a fight at all for anything there actions are always to late. I am a full time keeper and it’s have become normal to get abused by the public that are miss informed. Where are the Shooting bodies that should be fighting our corner putting these people right I tell you where driving around in they Range Rovers or in there VIP tent at game fairs.

Your first line is absolutely the point behind all this. Instead of banning the use of lead in shooting, the implication of which BASC and other shooting organisations as 'experts' will have been well aware, we should be educating and promoting the health and environmental bonus of organic game meat; and the effectiveness of pest control.

Experts require absolute zero of the above speaking with authority about something that they know very little or less about and blessed with "manna from heaven" to waste as they see fit. No experience required, apply within. (Expert) meaning, Ex, past tense, Has been, (Spurt) severe drip, usually under pressure, (expert).

@@jacquesdor50 Organic meat is great. I have been eating the fruits of my ventures for years like thousands of others. The steel ammunition debacle I feel is a direct attack on shooting itself. My 13 year old Grandson has been shooting with his uncle and myself on many occasions thoroughly enjoying every minute, either beating or having a go, under supervision, may I add. Also I feel benefiting from the social aspect. He mentioned his activity at school when asked by a teacher, What did you do at the weekend? This went down like a wasp at a picnic. Fortunately I had picked him up from school and could see that he was unhappy. Before we had gone a couple of hundred yards down the road we had got tears. When he had composed himself he told me one of the teachers said that she wasn't into murdering wild animals and he shouldn't murder them either and you guessed it. Polute the ground and water with lead? I was so angered by this but chose to drive my Grandson home and told him not to tell mum and dad. Grandad will sort this out tomorrow. I told his mum I will do the school run in the afternoon. The next day I confronted the head teacher and the teacher making unfounded accusations. I was both reserved and direct and informed her that my Grandson came here to be educated and not indoctrinated by someone on a private conquest. She told me that she had never been on a shoot. I asked the question what she was basing her opinion on? No answer. I then said to the headmistress, And your prepared to allow your staff to bully a 13 year old child? The bullying stopped and I can have polite conversation with all parties. In reality we are defending a hopeless position against an invasion of indoctrinated idiots that fit the narrative the bill and mostly unchallenged.

BASC 🏴☠️ 🤑 Money Pirates. People have willingly payed money to this organisation, in the belief that they were looking after shooters and safeguarding the sport? In reality they have not fell into line, but jumped into line. In doing so, have sealed their own fate as well as shooters. Please don't waste your time trying to tell me how "great" steel is. I for one have tried it in most of its forms and brands. It doesn't kill cleanly on game, range is no where near as effective and can be very expensive.

I tried olympic trap with steel shots and did not work well. For skeet, trap and sporting it worked fine (keeping in pocket few lead shot for some far away clays).

The original lead ban came about in America when in the late 60's a scientist stated that 4% of wildfowl were dying of lead shot poisoning -panic; as this meant thousands. So they started to collect gizzards from shot birds. It turned out that only a 1/2% ! Had truly ingested lead shot and they were shot flying not dying. This we know was ignored. Over the years we have done tests; including the testing of crops that grew in the fallout range of a clay shoot. What was found was that the grain had no more lead than the background readings from fields in the county. THIS WAS IGNORED. No one has died of lead poisoning, despite that some old houses still have lead pipes. We also force fed plastic wads to animals in the 70's-none died. This is a "knee jerk" reaction to the anti's and others wanting to stop shooting by the back door. BASC you have been warned.

Good luck with all of this. On the upside, it sounds like you have a group of logical, fact-based, and pragmatic advocates working through this (or trying to) with the government agencies. I can tell you from my experience here in the US, in California specifically, that the furor from the ignorant and misguided only made the situation worse. It should not be treated as a zero sum contest. The anti-lead argument has some valid points, and those should be heard and appropriately addressed. At the same time, it's important to factually and logically respond to the misinterpretations (or misrepresentation) of the research, and to show that many of the purported risks of lead ammunition use are overstated or simply not supported by real-world data.

No. Other alloy type shot is now available and it works better than steel and is not any where near as expensive as bismuth. It's near steel prices. BIO AMMO for a start.

Wondering if there will be a market for gunsmiths to convert these historic12 bore SxS into a steel proofed 20 bore using some type of sleeve, although not sure if a 20 without lead wold be of much use on a game day.

In the US, my waterfowling friends have their Browning BPS 10 gauge shotguns sleeved with a 10 gauge full choked barrel so they can shoot longer distances with steel shot. I would assume sleeveing a 12 gauge older shotgun with modern 12 gauge sleeves is feasible.

Why? My "historic" 12 bores will shoot steel if I have have to. Stop listening to crap like this and speak to a proper gunmaker or gun barrel maker. Your old guns will take STANDARD steel without steel proof (subject to a check over). And there are other alloy alternatives like lead coming out on the market that isn't bismuth money that you can use as if it were lead. This video is scaremongering.

I heard that Norway has lifted its lead ban even for wildfowling as the science doesn't add up. Wait till all the fields and shooting grounds are a orange with all the iron oxide staining, that can't be good!

I dig up lead rifle bullets metal detecting the foreshore that still have the land and grooves showing that have been there a 100yrs. Solubility of lead is poor.

TGS (the gun shop) channel, has been testing. Results are not catastrophic. Old guns will just be something like an old car, to be used occasionally. If you take it out a half a dozen times a year and put steel through it, it appears, according to the tests, theyll be fine.. The notion that they 'wont work', 'blow up' or seriously damage them within a box, seems to be a major exaggeration.

I shoot black powder shotguns, mild steel shot is safe in my firearm, all one needs to do is to see a trusting respectable gun dealer to check over your firearm.

As I understand it, this applies to all ammunition. This affects black powder rifle and pistol shooters that fire lead ball ammo and also like to cast their own. Lead shot is scattered around the locations where it’s shot, but for target shooters it ends up on the range or in the sand berms behind the targets. I’m also not sure how that affects rifle ammo, but I don’t know of any companies that manufacture anything other than lead or fmj bullets.

ive got 2 old guns that will only be able to shoot lead as far as im aware. an old 1968 gp greener and a 1978 aya n03 sbs, so il basically have to hand them in then if this goes forward??? and when it comes to newer stuff its shoot steel and thats that

I have a collection of Edwardian guns. I hate steel (recoil) but can use steel in them as the barrels are in excellent condition and the fixed chokes are less than 1/2. Guns DO NOT have to be steel shot proofed to be able to use STANDARD STEEL. AND there are now other alloys in shot on the market that is better than steel and not the price of bismuth that you can use and just carry on as normal.

Decades ago the US stopped using lead in waterfowl ammo. The one thing, steel was slower, and other types of shot were developed. Some just did not have the mass of lead to keep a good hitting power, others too much mass. Even now the only lead shot I have are old slugs.

This is a consultation document; all of the points made here can be part of the discussion if you make an effort to submit them to the enquiry. You can consult your MP on it if you want. All of the thoughts made here are worthless if you don't use them in the process. Two billion quid is apparently meaningless if people do not think it is worth some time on reading and commenting to protect shooting.

We had this with fishing years back, they made a lead substitute for certain sizes, not as good but it worked, cannot this material be used in guns in place of lead, I can see where shooting buckshot is spreading lead, but why lump airgunners in the same boat, they fire single shots, far less lead than a shotgun

First and foremost where does lead come from, it comes from the ground, one can say shooters are putting it back, alas, this is a joke. I cast my own rifle bullets, have done so for years, we have been expecting this so we doubt that the producers of firearm projectiles are not looking into this. Old firearms can be re proofed and we believe that mild steel shot can be used in most of old vintage firearms.

Indeed, back stops berms are designed to prevent ricochets so 99.9% of projectiles are retained in the range catchment areas. Plastic wads too are not toxic to wild life should they eat it in error, all in all Home office pproved rangers are a safe place to keep spent lead.

@@proxcess4946 I believe that if you use a zinc projectile it would need to be a reduced calibre than the firearm you shoot, cast 303 12 mil lead cools down to 11 mill, zinc stays the same size you cast.

Watching this in Nov 2023, 18 months after it was released. So the Govt have announced a ban on the use of lead shot with a 5 year transition period. Despite there being very little evidence that lead harms the environment, wildlife and indeed a person who accidentally ingests an odd piece of shot. BASC in my opinion capitulated and in doing so let down its members. Despite what he says here, Diggory Haddoke gave a talk at the 2021 Gamefair, which came across as his being in favour of the lead ban. However, as an owner of vintage guns as per highlighted here, I am now worried that they will suddenly become useless and hence worthless in coming years. Lead has been fired from sporting guns for over 200 years and yet there are no areas devoid of vegetation or wildlife because of lead contamination. There is no serious justification for banning lead shot, it's simply another way to discourage gun ownership. BASC, Countryside Alliance etc have failed and I hope the ban can be fought and eventually overturned.

I am against a lead ban for many reasons as stated on here but I have a collection of Edwardian guns. I hate steel (recoil) but can use steel in them as the barrels are in excellent condition and the fixed chokes are less than 1/2. Guns DO NOT have to be steel shot proofed to be able to use STANDARD STEEL. AND there are now other alloys in shot on the market that is better than steel and not the price of bismuth that you can use and just carry on as normal. Our vintage guns will not be obsolete as many say.

Excuse me if this is a daft question, I am not a gunsmith: Is there no way of replacing the chokes on existing guns to accept steel? Losing all of those beautiful examples of English craftsmanship would be tragic

Most of the guns in question are quite old with fixed chokes.

@@Chilly_Billy yes I gather as much, it would require some serious engineering to possibly convert them but for a crafted masterpiece worth 10 000 and upwards perhaps it is worth it to preserve the heritage of these guns? I was just wondering if it is possible at all.

It's very possible, I had it done via a professional gunsmith, admittedly on a very agricultural Biakal. I haven't done it on any of my better guns because I don't like stuffing round with their integrity, but it seems the way of the future so it looks like my 1950's Merkel 12 bore will be next to be opened up. My main problem with steel is imo it is not as good a killer as lead. The other option not mentioned here is the use of bismuth, though that does come with a cost.

My conclusions looking into this debate are: 1, Almost all guns will accept steel shot 2,Steel shot can kill very well, proven in areas where they have been forced to use them for a long time, like Denmark and California 3, Lead ban for upland game is nonsensical, since lead is not harmful n to the environment in its solid form. On dry ground it forms a lead oxide on the surface which does not break down 4, Steel shot for clays have been mandatory in Sweden for a long time, with exception for some non flying ground targets. No real problems have been reported as far as I have seen?! So the only people that will be hit very hard by a lead ban are the people that shoot guns with very light barrels (or are damascus). Vismut will be their only option as far as I can see. This is unfair and very sad, with no real benefit at all.

Bismuth is not the only option. There are other alloy shot on the market now almost as good as lead and ten times better than steel. And not very expensive. I have "light barrels" and Damascus barrels and I'm not concerned at all. (Although I am against the lead ban) A lot of disinformation on this video albeit it's a year old now.

Expert advice? Experts with no experience? "Will fit evidence?" The old battle fields of Northern France would be a good place to start? Rich in both Lead and Steel that's been there for over 100 years. Allegedly one expert has calculated that clearing unexploded ammunition at the current rate would mean it will take over 700 years to clear? Of course this remark will not even be replied to by anyone or conveniently overlooked by "Professor Expert" as it does not fit the narrative and quite possibly the results wouldn't fit the computer graphics he has done specially.

I cant even sell my guns, shops are flooded. I have a Miroku mk 38 trap I got new last year and Ive only put about 300 cartridges through it, I paid £1700 for it and I can't even get £800 for it now!

Why?? Because it's not steel shot proofed? That's what they all say the idiots. You can shoot standard steel through your MK all day long. Just get the chokes checked that they are not too tight.

Has anyone tried copper shot for the older guns? Softer than steel and thus kinder on old barrels, copper is slightly more dense than steel so should have a marginally greater effective range. Using copper would be more expensive than steel shot but surely the ability to continue to use, say, a pair of fine Damascus barrelled guns lawfully would make the expense worthwhile.

To all the negative comments, stop moaning. Spreading lead around the natural environment is not good. You can make all the comparisons you like, where other pollutants occur. Show that shooting is getting its house in order and not stuck in the past. A condition of all my Cormorant licenses is that steel shot must be used and none of my shooters moan about it.

Well they better make a good replacement. Steel shot sucks ass and is no damn good. The bullets i use are copper plated an synthetic tipped. Maybe old 303 British wont be used anymore. Thats a real loss but to hell with that. Ill still be using lead bullets because im canadian.

What a load of crap, and Diggory knows better than what he just said. You can use steel in old guns. Just get them checked first by a gunmaker or bonafide gunsmith. This is so full of disinformation. I hate steel but I'd use it if I had too quite happily in my old English guns. Besides, steel shot is the quick fix for the transition. Are you telling me a company like Eley who's majority of sales is lead cartridges are not working on other alternatives. They would be out of business overnight if they weren't. There are. And I'm not talking Bismuth. Bio Ammo is one. Shot made up of at least four alloys and is 70% as dense as lead and roughly the same price as Eley Grand Prix Steel. You can use in old guns as normal as if it were lead. Other companies will follow. So DO NOT panic and get rid of your prized old vintage guns. I'm not.
