Changing the leaf spring on a PA-18 for the first time. Not the easiest job to do alone, but I get creative and make it work.

Honestly with enough videos of this quality you and Vinny could cover everything there is to do with aircraft maintenance. It's a big task but someday someone will watch these videos and they'll be the sole reason they got their A&P

Nice music from Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past. Cool little easter egg there from a game I grew up playing.

Yes, but was that configuration correct for that plane, or just the way it came after previous modifications because that was the only leaf springs they had at the time?

Why did the spring segments need replaced? Was the tailwheel shimmying? Seems like those bolts ought to be torqued...
@JamesSullivans7 жыл бұрын
David, as the leaf spring wears there becomes less and less clearance between the tailwheel and the tow hitch until finally they must be replaced. Rest assured the bolts were torqued, just didn't make it into the edit. We take care of tailwheel shimmy by adjusting the tension on the springs on either side of the wheel btw.

How long does it take u too get to work?
@Anglico211467 жыл бұрын
James when replacing tail springs its good practice to replace the hardware as well. Those things take a beating and over time wear and stretching will start to cause shimmy and possibly failures. It's cheap insurance... One other thing to keep in mind is tail wheel geometry, it is one of the leading causes of shimmy, if you run into shimmy issues in the future. Any reason why the super cubs don't have cowlings?
@JamesSullivans7 жыл бұрын
Most do. We tow banners with these particular Cubs so we fly low and slow. No cowlings so we can get extra engine cooling.
