Leonard Muellner (Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies at Brandeis University) and Belisi Gillespie present all the content covered in two semesters of a college-level Introduction to Ancient Greek course.
Professor Muellner tries to help us wrap our minds around what learning Ancient Greek is like for the modern student. Some of the topics under discussion include: differences between learning a language through writing versus speaking, the limited types of texts that we have, and what grammatical concepts we might encounter along the way. This video does not correspond with any particular lessons in the Hansen & Quinn textbook, but you might want to begin to digest the information in their Introductory chapter, particularly pages 1-6 (up until Section 10) which discusses the alphabet, basic pronunciation, and breathing marks. Happy learning!

I just want to thank you for having such extensive information in one place. I've been trying to learn ancient Greek for around a month on and off, the reason for the on and off being that I could not find any resources that give me the full scope of the information in one concise, all encompassing go, at least until I found this channel. Thanks again.

+The Center for Hellenic Studies Looking forward for more videos. I have gone through first 4 videos i.e., till first declension. Alongside I'm trying to better my Greek reading skills. It seems some portion of 4th video is missing because in the beginning of 5th video Professor says that he has gone through another form of first declension ending in α (χορα). Can you add those video sections as these paradigms are pretty important. It would be helpful if course notes or references could be provided for each lesson along with some exercises. Again I thank you for making this courseware available to all.

I took a year (or was it two? I can't remember now) of attic greek at the University of Washington. I should have failed the last term, but my professor was kind lol. I struggled the entire way through. This was in 1998/1999. I didn't have access to videos such as these. KZfaq didn't exist yet. I had a study group with students who learned quicker than I did. I'd like to go back and relearn everything but move through it at a slower pace - because I think that's how I will succeed.

Herodotus You can learn Ancient Greek by yourself. There are many Ancient Greek learning textbooks, e.g., Introduction to Attic Greek by Donald Mastronarde, Introduction to Ancient Greek: A Literary Approach by C.A.E. Luschnig, Greek: An Intensive Course by Hardy Hansen etc. Currently I'm learning Latin but I also want to learn Ancient Greek, Sanskrit and Old English.

Thank you for uploading! I could watch 3-4 lessons. In Germany this course would take 2 semesters with 2 hours a week, of course more detailed. Unfortunately advanced courses are rare, so would it be possible to provide some more, as there are important features in classical Greek only available in advanced level courses, e.g. Hyperbaton, word order variations and so forth?

Hi Peter, thanks for your note! Here in the US the entire textbook would take 2 semesters as well, with about 3 hour of class time per week. I'll see what we can do about an advanced series. Thanks for the suggestion!! Best, Claudia

As I understand it Ancient Greek is subdivided into many dialects and even sub languages (Hellenistic, Attic, etc) My understanding is also that depending on which variety you learn you can either read texts like the original Homer or Plato or you can not. So before I take the plunge and dive into learning 'Ancient' Greek, which version will be taught here and which texts from which period(s) would I be able to read?

To clarify for anyone reading now: this course teaches Attic Greek, the dialect of classical Athens. Students traditionally start with Attic. While I am still studying Attic, I have heard it is quite easy to read Koine (the dialect used by all Greeks after Alexander’s conquests) if one knows Attic. Those two dialects are used in most classical texts.
