Feel free to ask me questions in the comments. I read all of them!
Thanks to Carter Williams for designing the thumbnail.
M1: (u-r)+(d-l) = execute on UR wheel while only L pins are up
M2: l-d = execute on UR wheel while only the UR pin is down
M3: c-u = execute on DR wheel while only the DR pin is down
M4: c-l = execute on UL wheel while only the UL pin is down
M5: r-M4 = first move on the back; execute while at least two diagonal pins are down

If the back cross is not pointing to 12, you are messing up the M5 calculation. Also, make sure to read the description if you are struggling.

I sometimes had a hard time with the unsolved incomplete cross on the back, and didn't know if it was my problem with execution or my miscalculation, but it turned out that everything was just because of my miscalculation. Nice tutorial! Do you think of it as subtraction? When I was practicing for my last comp I found myself switching to thinking about what turn I would need to do to move one dial to the other. I also find it interesting that you directly memo M1 and M2 in order, I guess you find that easier than working out u-r and d-l separately first? I always seem to have a weird preference with these things.
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford Жыл бұрын
I don't think about the math when solving. I only taught it like this because it's less abstract than distances between dials. After a few dozen solves, people don't even think of the math and begin just recognizing patterns. I think of M2 as the negative of d-l, but I felt that might be confusing and l-d is simpler anyways for beginners.

Also I memo M5 first because I thought it made more sense and it doesn't change anything as far as I know?
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I plan to make videos in the future on forcing corner skips, but they're easy to preserve if you place them in DL. You can force nonexistent corner skips with M5 and a setup move (in some lucky cases, a setup move isn't even necessary). Memoing M5 first doesn't make a difference, but I taught it last because that's how I learned.

Carter cubes that's what I thought at first but after doing some solves with it I find that like Caleb says, the maths becomes 2nd nature and doing it in under 12 seconds is so trivial now. It's basically doing addition on the ring of integers modulo 12, it's very simple

Thank you. It depends on the lucky case, but I'd suggest solving them on the front generally. This is because lucky cases on the front can potentially allow you to skip pin shifts in your solves. You can still become world class with flipping, but this probably won't be the case in a few years. If you have any interest in no-flip, I'd suggest learning it sooner rather than later. It's much easier to switch to no-flip at 8 seconds than at 4 seconds. No-flip will make you better at Clock, but it'll take some practice.

when executing m5 does it have to be the ur dial when only dl is up or can it be ul pin up and move dr dial. Sorry if you don't understand this quesiton.
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford Жыл бұрын
M5 is essentially the AUF for the backside, so you can do it on a down wheel whenever the pins on the back affect all five non-corner pieces on the back. This means you don't even need to have three pins down; you can also just have two diagonal pins down. In short, what you suggested works (though I'd suggest using the ur dial instead to avoid the bottom wheel move unless you really like turning bottom wheels).

I just barely learned from Chris Choi's video which has some different math and does a different order of solving things (solving completely during the front cross). Obviously you use your order and such, but is there an inherent advantage to doing one over the other?
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford Жыл бұрын
I have some bias because I learned no-flip before Lou Yunhao even created his variant. I also haven't looked as extensively into it as I should. That being said, I think that it is easier to preserve and use lucky cases with Sheerin. Doing the back cross during corners can also help you reduce turn distances (in some situations...) and even allow you to skip them entirely when the down wheel turn alone solves the corner. Sheerin is also more ergonomic. Lou Yunhao's order is pretty weird with how it solves the cross on front.

The most important thing is to minimize moves that require you to use the lower wheels. If you have an edge-center pairing, you will want to place that vertical at the top. Additionally, if you have a corner-edge pairing, you will want to place that in the lower left corner to preserve it. There's more you can do, but if you are at the point with Sheerin where you are thinking about ways to further optimize it, I would suggest that you instead learn 7 simul.

For some reason, my solutions aren't solving the cross on the back, here is an example: I started scrambling with black on the front and did this scramble: UR5+ DR6+ DL2- UL5- U1- R3- D2+ L2- ALL1+ y2 U4- R5+ D6+ L0+ ALL3- For my solution, I used white as the back and these were my calculations: M1=3 M2=3 M3=1 M4=5 M5= -1 I started on the black face and put all pins down except for DL, and then I did M5 on the UR wheel. I had a few questions, as when I follow this vid down to every detail and with this scramble it works but for other scrambles I am still unsure about the steps: 1. Can M5 be always exe first if I were to blindly follow these steps for ever solve? 2. Why do you switch to solving cross and then move to executing the memo after 2 cross edges and alternate between these two? 3. Can this tutorial be followed down to the last word for every solve for it to work on clock? Or are there any intuitive steps in between that I am missing in case I am starting with Sheerin directly? Thanks for your time.
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford 8 ай бұрын
1. Yes. 2. It's just how Sheerin works. You don't have to do this, but you'd need to change the calculations to do it differently. This is not the most efficient way to do things (the most efficient way is the way that 7 simul does it). 3. Yes. There are of course intuitive tricks to make your solutions better, but they're not really worth exploring anymore with 7 simul around. If your goal is speed, you should learn 7 simul.

In Sheerin, you mainly solve the cross on the back while solving the corners on the front. This typically takes 5 simul moves and 4 regular moves, but with tricks you can do it with 6 simul moves. In Lou, you mainly solve the cross on the back while solving the cross on the front. With 7 simul, you always solve the puzzle in 7 simul moves. hey caleb, it’s me seth. Which version of no flip did you tell me you use earlier?
@CalebTrelford
@CalebTrelford Жыл бұрын
In competition today, I used this version of no-flip. However, 7 simul is better, and I'm in the process of switching to it. My written tutorial is as follows: For memo, I memorize three pairs. I use x2 flips for memo. **First Pair**: the first part of the first pair: c-d second part of the first pair: (dr-r) + (U-L) Every number from 1 to 12 (0) I have assigned a letter from A through L. For example, if my first part calculation is 3 and my second part calculation is 4, my letter pair I'd memo would be CoD. **Second Pair**: You don't really have to memo a full pair for this (you only need to memo the move on the back). However, I memo the full pair to keep consistency in my memo. first part: L-U second part: d-r This pair is a little weird. To minimize flips, the first part is actually the second part in execution. For example, if this pair were 3 and 4, I would memo DiCe. **Third Pair**: This one's pretty difficult to get the hang of, but it's worth it for ensuring that you get optimal pin transitions in your solve. It's not too difficult after a lot of practice. You can also do this one like the second pair where you memo the second part first and then flip the memo to minimize flips but that's not how this is handled if you plan on one looking in the future. For the calculation, make sure that you are paying respect to the "real" values of the clock faces. For example, if the red mark for 12 is at the bottom, then the top is 6, not 0 or 12. first part: (UR-U) + (C-D) + DL + l + r second part: u-c+d + (UL-L) + (DR-R) **Execution**: The way I execute my pairs is I do the initial letter on the left side and the final letter on the right side. dl: do the first pair you memorized; for example, for CoD I would do +3 with the DL wheel and +4 with the UR wheel R: do the second pair you memorized DR: solve UL and C relative to L and U \ : do the third pair you memorized UL: solve the 2x2 (comprised of UL, U, L, and C) and DL to D L: solve the 2x3 and DR to R ur: solve all to 12
