This is a video for anyone just starting out on the washboard. We learn a few beginner exercises as we look for ways to put the Drag into a washboard rhythm and work on using both hands in different ways. From straight to swing, slow to bluegrass, we explore how far you can go with a basic pattern.

You asked for ideas for future videos. I’ve been listening to some old musicians like Washboard Sam. They seem to play a basic rhythm pattern for a few bars and then break it up with a quick riff, usually made up of taps. I’m not a drummer and have difficulty understanding the timing of the riffs /frills. Maybe a video on some examples and how to figure such things out might be one idea

Hi how do you keep the thimbles on your fingers?

get them the right size, they should be kind of tight and blow a little hot air in them first, but mostly, if they keep falling off, you might be pressing too hard, it's all about having a super light soft touch, like a feather, so so so so soft. the touch is the hardest thing to develop, I am always working on it. Check out washboard Chaz trio from New Orleans, the man has the lightest touch in the world. amazing.
