Samba should always be played over a 2/4 pattern and never over a 4/4 one.

Thank-you for not being boring while being easy to follow (a rare thing on KZfaq). I really need to learn how to play this as I’m performing at a festival in 3 months 😅

I particularly like your thing in the bottom panel that looks like the bottom of a sauce pan. What is it, and how did you attach it?

Maaaan this took me a minute to figure out and get the coordination :D Such a good lesson ( I watched a few episodes ahead already and I am so pumped to get there). Is there any chance to catch you live ? I live in Germany too and would love to see you play one day.

I love your series. Am up to session 7. Ordered a washboard. What do you use for thimbles? Maker? Sizes? materials?

Thanks for your insight and tuition buddy. I used to love hearing my Uncle Pip play his old washboard here in the UK in the '60s and his harmonica too when I was a kid. Cheers, Clive - Spyda Music Productions.

please show a close up on how you attach the stap & accessories. What sounds they make, how you attached the pieces ie what types of glue? Thanks a ton. I'm loving learning with you

I was wondering if you could give me some song recommendations to check out? Been playing washboard for years, but am just self taught. Really interesting to learn the words for the different styles/patterns! Cheers!

Hey Matt, this lesson might benefit from a visual. Maybe a one, e and uh, two e and uh, etc. what do you think? Maybe like a drum paradiddle chart, BRLRB B meaning both hands.

It takes a while to master. My trick was slow and concentrate on the triplet, slow, and pause on the eighth note. The eighth note hand gets automatic after a while.

Hallelujah Brother!!! Thank you so much! I am having a skiffle epiphany and hungry to learn more about the entire vortex! I'm thinking of taking up the washboard and fascinated especially to find out about its use on plantations and in the Caribbean especially. You sound like the fellow for the job! Count me in!

Hi Mac, I have not contacted you for a long time. I keep going over and over your lessons so you never age. I am working on the Amen break right now. I have a foot pedal and a large drum I use as a bass drum at home and having a great time trying to coordinate it all as I have never played a trap set. The problem I have is that I play in a couple of hippie marching bands where I cannot use a bass drum. At the bottom of my washboard, I have a hollow wooden thing that looks like a fish with scales. It makes a wonderful sound. So, when I am not at home, I imagine the fish to be the bass drum and rather than using my right hand just to keep the pulse on the washboard, I am also using it to hit the wooden fish on the bass parts. Do you have any other suggestions? I have not been able to find the suitcase you suggested as a bass drum for less than 200 dollars, including shipping, on the internet; and I don't really need it, but it has given me a wonderful reason to haunt local thrift shops and garage sales. So, to reiterate, since I can't use my foot, how do you feel about my right hand doubling as a pulse keeper AND as a bass drum player? Thanks, I appreciate you SO MUCH!!! Kathy

The Cardenas Market Mexican grocery store chain has washboards for $13. I recently picked one up and added strap pegs to it so I can use a guitar strap.

I lived in Berlin too and the washboard seems the perfect instrument for that town: cheap, proletarian, retro chic and cool. but dont play it with a bottle opener - bottle openers are deeply uncool in Berlin - no berliner ever opens a beer bottle with a bottle opener - use a lighter or a spoon etc or any other thing but not a bottle opener!

Hahaha. Great point. I always use zinc thimbles and a zinc king board, I feel that zinc on zinc is the best sound you can get.

So I got myself a zinc king online, and the sound is so much better than the aluminum one I picked up at the antique shop! This exercise is very fun to play along at the same time with. and increases my confidence that I will be able to master percussion instruments yet!
