Learn the Washboard 2: What is Blues, What is Swing?

What is Blues? What is Swing? How do I Swing? How do I play the blues? I answer these basic questions as we learn how to play the blues shuffle rhythm on the washboard. This is a basic but essential rhythm that will be at the core of everything we learn moving forward.

Maaaan this took me a minute to figure out and get the coordination :D Such a good lesson ( I watched a few episodes ahead already and I am so pumped to get there). Is there any chance to catch you live ? I live in Germany too and would love to see you play one day.

So I got myself a zinc king online, and the sound is so much better than the aluminum one I picked up at the antique shop! This exercise is very fun to play along at the same time with. and increases my confidence that I will be able to master percussion instruments yet!

What size washboard ya got? Like dimensions?

It's just about 35 x 50 cm, my main board is all custom though, I built it out of white oak and black Walnut, however the metal washboard bars I took from a vintage zinc king 701 washboard.

If you want to play softer, use plastic brushes and a large washboard. I prefer the lingerie models for my custom builds desiged for gloves with bottle caps. That way i can reach everyrhing that i attach (cowbells, wood blocks, etc). The smaller models are too narrow for brushes, which is why you need more than one washboard :@)

Hi John, thanks for watching. I have a few tips: First, make sure they are the right size, pretty snug. Second, it's super important that you play with a light and soft touch, for my first year of playing I was way too rough, the trick is staying light soft and loose when you play fast, it just takes lots of repetition. Third, one little trick is I breath some hot air in them before I stick them on, the steam seems to help them stick a bit. Good luck.

@@learnthewashboard5223 When I was learning my zinc thinbles ripped up my Zinc king. I play with lots of different bands in different kinds of venues. It’s hars to play soft whenever you play crazy fast, so I fabricated bottle caps and glued them onto gloves with epoxy. No more sharp edges. No more destruction.

I notice when sliding with your left hand you're very accurate with the length of time you fill space and stop right on the next quarter note. Ever go one washboard bump too far? Maybe I'm overthinking it, or maybe I should practice in my comfort zone tempo to start with instead of super slow? I'm trying to translate many years of drumming experience to washboard. Nice videos man!

Hmm, I actually never really thought about that, I started on the Kit as well, sometimes I think of the drags as rolls, like a 5, 7, 9 stroke roll etc. . Sometimes I think of it like brushes on a snare drum. I would say the most important thing is hitting your downbeats or the 2 and 4 accents to keep the band locked together, and just play around with the drags within that. Does this make any sense?
