LEARN TO FLY | VFR CROSS COUNTRY NAVIGATION - Lesson #1a | Student Pilot | Full ATC
Well, today I finally get to leave my local training area and go on my first cross-country flight. This is the first video in a series of complete lessons which will document my journey to obtain a cross-country endorsement.
Today's navigation flight, which is described in more detail in the video, takes me from Wollongong (YWOL) to The Oaks (YOAS) and back. To keep the video short, this flight will be split up into two separate videos - part a and part b. This is the 1st part of the first lesson where we leave Wollongong (YWOL) to fly to The Oaks (YOAS).
Included below is a link to the weather brief, flight log and a map of the planned flight in case you want to follow along a little more closely:

So helpful that you include the chats prior to startup. It can be so intimidating when you're under instruction to start making decisions. Seems like a good instructor as well. Thanks for sharing this, navigation is a bit of a performance to display we can navigate manually. We can't use EFBs like the rest of the world so this is is invaluable to us students studying thank you.

Nice video. I also find it is best to self critique and never get to cocky. My flying is at a similar stage. Based out of Camden. Watching this prepping for my YSCB NAVS, Have done solo to Orange already, however Canberra has a few more hurdles with ATC comms. Good luck with it mate.

Big circular runways make more sense for light aircraft. Then you can always land with the prevailing wind on the nose.

Another inspiring video. I love having you a few hours ahead of me so I know what's coming :) One thing that worries me and that I'm being totally anal about is VFR cruising altitude. Your second leg was tracking on the east side of 0 degrees (1-12 degrees), yet your cruise altitude was for west. Is it because it was only for a short period of time? Part 2 please!!!!
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video mate. 2nd part coming next week. Regarding the cruise altitudes - the GPS readout is in Degrees True. The VFR cruise altitudes are based on degrees magnetic. So, although I was tracking 1-12 degrees True, my magnetic course was 348-359 and thus need to be cruising at evens + 500. Im sure my instructor deliberately planned that for this first Nav :) I reckon it catches a lot of students out! Also note the GPS altitude was reading about 100ft higher than the altimeter.

Good video. Feels just like when I did my first Nav lesson. How did you mount the GoPro behind. I used a clamp mount on the flange in the structure although it wasn't all that solid, what mount? Also keen to know how you did the audio and track log? Cheers.

Hey Chad, check out a video I made for the video and audio recording: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqeblZOWzJ_ZfqM.html As for the track log, I recorded the GPS track with my android phone and used a program called Dashware to overlay it on the video.

i do like the fact you include all the details, but i still think it would be a good idea to cut out the parts that have no benefit. 1hr + videos are a little daunting. just my opinion. Either way it's nice to see some Aussie footage as I'm about to start lessons myself. Relevance with our laws etc is great. Keep up the good work!

Is your flight planner an RAAUS format or supplied by the training school. I have a fee one was CASA but it's somewhat irrelevant. Only flying Class G airspace and not being a fixed wing.

Like pretty much any stage of learning to fly - read heaps, watch heaps of videos, and download flight sim so you can practice procedures and workflow on the ground rather than in the air. Google earth and your VFR map are great to get use to reading from map to ground and vice versa

Romeo Juliet Whiskey I've been enjoying your videos of your learning experience, and I'm not a pilot, but who knows someday? Took some lessons years sgo so I know a little. I really like your flight instructor by the way! Nothing seems to slip by him and he is excellent calmly keeping your thinking and attention in the right direction so you dont get behind the plane, very calm and professional! Mean time I like learning what I can and you mentioned using flight sims to practice procedures on the ground. Its been many years now but I used to fly flight sims a lot, so by now Im sure they have improved greatly, I'm thinking about getting the latest greatest FS, but not even sure which it would be, I know MS has FSX, and I've heard of another thats supposed to be very good as well. I have a couple questions if you font mind, 1, do you recommend any specific flight sim? And does it feel like it accurately gives enough reality especially in terms of actually helping you to learn the procedures and processes of instrumentation, navigation and radios so that what you're doing in the sim is a good representation of whats required in actual flight for learning to navigate VFR and maybe even help learn IFR? Thanks in advance for any info you might have and safe & happy flights to you!

@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Don't worry about it too much...your going to love it. If you want to save money on your training then recording your flight and re-watching afterwards and before your next lesson will help out a lot. Grab a flight Sim and a VR headset will also put you ahead of the learning curve. Read up on your theory before and afterwards as well.
