I really enjoy the videos like this where you unpack your process. Very instructive!

Alright, you just earned yourself another subscriber! That was crazy! It will probably take me as many days to figure out this thing looking at the tab as it did you hours to figure it out from the recording! You have practiced allot.

Thanks Marcel what a great video! I really appreciate you showing us your process. I’m going to use my voic more when I transcribe breaks. Awesome job as always

Also you said for us to give somr examples to work on that has intersting things. Tony Rices second break in Nine Pound Hammer at the All Star Jam is a good one. Especially the second half of his second break. It sounds like he's playing from another planet. It's in time yet kind of out of time (hard to explain) and the use of his double stops mixed with single lines. Insane. Or any break from any version of John Hardy haha.

Great work Marcel! You should try Birdland Breakdown.

Edit: Really cool Piggly Wiggly hat in the back. I need one of those. Edit: Also glad you pointed out that Tony Rice actually does do hybrid picking occassionally. You never hear that mentioned. Edit: Love love Tony Rice. I've listened to pretty much every album but always discover songs I've over looked. This is a prime example. Just downloaded it and it's now in my Tony Rice playlist. Edit: adding to comments as I listen ha.

Hey Marcel, great channel! In addition to all of Tony’s great bluegrass licks (you should break down his break on Your Love is Like a Flower on Vol. 2 of the BGAB), are there any jazz songs like those he played with the David Grisman Quintet or with the Unit (a la Mar West or Still Inside) that you’d be interested in showcasing? Thanks!

Dude- outstanding job. I got so much out of watching this, not least of which is that I should start considering video lessons. I found you through watching Molly Tuttle content and you appeared in the side bar. I love your style and humour. Do you have availability at the moment. I'm in the UK so there's a time zone thing too. Lemme know. Thanks.

Very informative! I was watching today but only got halfway through 'cos I had a lesson in 20 minutes! Used your tip about vocalizing the melody to help a student get a handle on his part. I taught a bunch of Miss McLeod's Reel today. Have you got any embellishments for that one?

Hey thanks for the comment, glad you like the video and enjoyed my beautiful singing. Miss Mcleod's Reel is a tune of yet to learn! Guess I'll have to work it up.

Marcel, do you change the way you hold a pick when playing rhythm vs playing lead. I would love to see a video on something like that.

Hey there, I don't actually! What sometime shifts a little bit is the rest of my arm. You're right in thinking that you have to use slightly different approaches though. I think the switch is less dramatic then most people think though!

Marcel, love your stuff. I have a question that has nothing to do with music, directly. You are located in North Carolina I believe but on the intros to you videos you show driving behind a truck going through the mountains on I-5 in California outside of Mt. Shasta/Dusmuir heading south. I recognized it immediately when I first saw one of your videos and have been curious ever since as to this intro segment. Is there a story behind it?

Good catch! Before I moved to North Carolina I was living in Bellingham, Washington. We used to play a lot of gigs up and down I-5. I don't remember why or exactly where I took that footage but it would have been on the road in between a couple gigs. After I moved to NC that clip stuck around for a little bit until I changed it to something else!

Love your channel and hard work! One of my faves is Tony's break on the "Hot Dawg" album's cut, "16/16." There's a lot of information there for any aspiring player. Want to take it on in an transcription?

You know, I've listened to the DGQ20 version of that a lot more than the Hot Dawg version! Feel free to email me if you want to chat about it. lessonswithmarcel@gmail.com

They are indeed! I inherited a disease called otosclerosis from my Dad. So I've been wearing hearing aids since I was 6.

I know this is a tough one and I'm not trying to take anything away from you, but you've got the really difficult lick all wrong. It's clearly making use of open strings to get the "floating" sound. Tony used floating licks a lot on his first couple records. The lick is, unfortunately, more complicated than what you have tabbed out here.
