Before you go ahead with destructive testing on the leatherman bit holder you might want to see how much torque you as an 'average' guy can actually comfortably/reasonably apply to a leatherman tool bit driver. Just to show approximately where on the scale the critical failure point is in relation to how much a person is likely going to actually apply to the tool (invert test, hold torque wrench in vice and use the tool by hand to see what your max effort = torque you can apply With multitool). Also it would have been informative to check the functionality of the ratchet after every test incriment to see if that torque setting has effected the opperation of the ratch mechanism.

That’s a good point, I’m not sure what kind of torque I could generate with just the leatherman handle, I’ll set something up an give it a try, 25 ft/ lbs is gping to be a lot to put into a small handle, you can see how bit the torque wrench is by comparison! Thanks for the idea!

@@gearsNtools Great....I guess my point is that the ratchet bit extender is designed to be used in conjunction with the Leatherman tools so it is only fair to set a standard benchmark of how much torque one is likely to achieve when using this combination so we can see how much the tool ultimately performs against that metric ("give me a long enough lever and I can move the world" Achimedes).

I'm thinking that the tang of the ratchet broke from side flex and not torsion since you were not holding the head of the torque wrench and from looking at the closeup of the break. If the Leatherman ratchet was being used in a Leatherman tool to tighten or loosen a fastener, it would not have that side flex and would possibly handle a bit more torque.
@gearsNtools
@gearsNtools 3 жыл бұрын
I think when you are using hand tools you're going. to get some side stresses regardless. that being said I also tested the standard bit adapter (separate video) and this one performed better. It exceeded my expectations which is a good sign given my less than perfect testing method :).
@chrisose

I think the unit would have withstood more that the 300in/lbs if it were only in an axial load. The issue was that in the process of applying force you were also applying a fairly significant lateral loading to the adaptor pin.
@gearsNtools
@gearsNtools 2 жыл бұрын
you're probably right, I think this test is still a good real world test, it's unlikely you'd put a perfect axial load on it. I also tested the bit adapter on the tool in a different video and it failed well under the 300"/LBS that this ratchet driver did. All in all I'd say this design was a success!

Interesting test but not ‘real world’. If you are just simply testing the strength of the ratchet adapter, that’s one thing. However, a ‘true’ test of its usability would be in the leatherman itself. If this was done, my guess is that the leatherman at the point of connection to the ratchet adapter would give way much much sooner than being secured in a vise grip. Failure would occur probably at half the torque rate as tested.

Normally the driver would be torqued evenly, not from one side like that which could cause a sideways force at the top of the driver which in turn would cause another torque orthogonal to the first about the clamped region. It looks like the failure was caused by the resultant of the two torques, failing in both shear and tension. Probably a worse case than if the torque was symmetrical.

Part of that could be the camera angle, but I’ll be the first to admit this isn’t a perfect test setup, but when you use this in the real world there will be other loads introduced as well so I think it’s still a good representation of its capability. You went from 250 lbf-in (28 N m) to 300 lbf.in (34 N m) and the fitting broke, not the ratchet but it is still a bit damaged. You have the foresight to ask yourself the question of use in real conditions, either coupled to the bit driver. It is clear that Leatherman sized the resistance of the ratchet to the resistance of the bit driver. It is clear that Leatherman dimensioned the resistance of the ratchet to the muscle twisting force of a muscular user (inf ~ 30 N m) So I say that this ratchet is a success. Your test is interesting and significantly more edifying than TrumpToolCrip's botched test.
