Looking to leave bedside nursing and into home care nursing such as hospice, home health or home infusions? This video is for you! In this video, I talk about what it's like working for home care, what to look for in agencies/companies, and the different types of pay models.
I am a home care nurse with almost 2 years of experience. I decided to start my career outpatient because I knew working in the hospital wasn't for me. I worked in the hospital as a nursing assistant and couldn't see myself doing that for the rest of my career. As a new grad, I gave a change in home care and loved it! I decided to no longer pursue a position in the hospital and build my career in home care nursing.

Hi! This video was so informative for me ESPECIALLY since I also live in southern CA, and I have worked bedside for over a year and want to look into work situations where I can feel less burnt out. I know a lot of west coast graduates and clinical instructors too so this info was so relevant!!

I feel you! When I was working in home health, I would have days like these. Make sure you're getting paid for those hours, if you're not, its time to find another company. I have experience working with other agencies who have amazing support, understand and respect when I say I can't take anymore patients.

They have skills validation but its not extensive. You perform the skill and they critique you. You can also come to the office and practice yourself, the only downside is you re-use the same supplies as they don’t want to waste new supplies every time you practice.

You mentioned you hadn’t done IVs since nursing school , did your new job provide training on these skills?
@nurse_krizia
@nurse_krizia Жыл бұрын
Hello, we did a skills validation but not a training course. Employers are willing to pay for outside training courses for IV. The costs usually range around $400 and is over a span of 3 days. I decided to purchase a practice IV arm and set off Amazon and practiced on that. I learned what not to do and what to do, which helped a lot. I also watched phlebotomy videos and vein anatomy to learn where to look for veins

I mainly work in PACU but do pre-op here and there at an outpatient surgery center. I'm definitely getting better with IVs. I've been wanting to do a per diem home infusion job, but I look at the job qualifications with little IV experience that i have and don't apply for fear of not being qualified. How did u land your job? Did doing home health help? I have 4 yrs of medical surgical/ acute rehabilitation nursing. These jobs I notice look for people with ED, critical care, or oncology experience. Thank you. I work south OC and see a number of infusion jobs. 😃🙏

They liked that I had home health experience as IV skills can be learned! Trust me, I had so much trouble on my first couple visits that I thought I was going to get fired… lol But I had so much support from my field nurses and supervisors. If you don’t get an IV in you let your supervisor know so they can find someone else to staff. I’ve failed my first couple of times but my supervisor said I’ll get better the more I keep practicing. So I bought a practice IV arm, an IV finder off Amazon, watched KZfaq videos, and learned from my mistakes and now I feel so much more confident!

@@genevievemiranda5185 I applied on indeed and they love how I have home health experience so I think that helped me a lot even with little to no IV experience! During my orientation, we did have nurses who are per diem from ICU or pre-op. Home care in general is in high demand!

Hey- random question- do you ever get concerned with the state of home environments (ie bedbugs, roaches, general hoarding issues) and do your employers usually have policies regulating what conditions workers can say no to? I know this is probably the rare exception but I have to ask! Considering hospice, thank you so much!
@nurse_krizia
@nurse_krizia 8 ай бұрын
Hi! To be honest, you don’t know what you’re walking into until you get to the patient’s home. I’ve expected to visit homes in wealthy communities and walk into a hoarded home. Generally, if your service area is rural/poor communities it is more likely that you’ll walk into these homes. Patients aren’t aware that they live in these environments.
@nurse_krizia
@nurse_krizia 8 ай бұрын
In these homes, it’s likely they need a lot of help. If I see bugs/roaches I never set my belongings down, you can also put on PPE. I tend to make these visits which If you feel unsafe, you are entitled to say no.
