After 13 months on the Ice, it was finally time to leave the South Pole and head back to the real world. This is an account of that journey.

After more than a year in that nearly all white snow and ice environment, seeing all that green living, breathing stuff must be a real trip. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it honestly was mind blowing. But even social things were interesting too! Like later that night be went to a restaurant and everyone was just like staring around blankly because it was such a weird environment. It's definitely made me more grateful for things I used to take for granted!!

Great to see your perspective of the South Pole, and welcome back. I know where you were standing outside of the terminal in Christchurch (no, I'm not a poley).

Thank you!! It was quite nice to get back into the real world! I am very much enjoying it :) And okay! That's cool! How do you know the spot??

I was there in February, waiting for my hotel shuttle after a long flight. Hope you get to enjoy some NZ summer fun! Were you waving goodbye to Robert Scharwz at the beginning?

Ahh okay! But we did have a great week in NZ! But now I've headed to SE Asia, so I'm currently in Thailand! And yeah, that was Robert!

Ever see or hearing anything in the blizzards of mid-summer (eternal night)? Any strange medical injuries, etc? Assuming no NDA type things are involved of course.

I read that there are at least 3 types of birds seen visiting the geographical south pole.

All the aircraft I see at the south pole appear to be turboprops, do any turbofan engine aircraft land at the south pole?
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 5 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, they don't have any turbofan planes that land at the Pole. We definitely fly down to McMurdo in the C17s and even airbuses, but they only go there. All the planes I've seen at the Pole are prop planes (LC-130, Basler, and Twin Otter).

Thanks for getting back to me! That's interesting, do you happen to know why it's like that? Is it just too cold for them?
@GoneVenturing

No worries! Thank you for the question! And honestly I'm not sure. What I do know is that McMurdo has two different runways, one for planes with skies and one for the planes with wheels. Everything that comes down to Pole lands on skis, and as far as I know, the C-17 can't be outfitted for that (but I don't know that for sure, I've just never seen it). So I'm not sure if it has something to do with a structural difference of the runway, temperatures, the lack of skis, or some combination of those! What I can tell you is that I'm actually heading back down for another year long contract any day now (the weather has been really bad so we've been delayed), so I can definitely get an answer for you then! I'm curious now myself!

dunno whether to be more impressed or more sad that there are so many people down there
@GoneVenturing

Should be impressed :) The research happening down there between all the different stations has been helping us understand the world in so many more ways. And while there is an environmental impact, we work very hard on minimizing it!

Why would you be sad? The more people, the more diverse and inclusive the environment. Or do you believe that only the elites should experience this world? Keep the masses confined in their face diaper gulags?

I was working down there as support staff! I worked with housing and dining, doing all kinds of things, but mostly "front of house" type stuff.
