Should hunters be able to leave tree stands up on public land all year long? Is it ethical, is it fair? In this video I share my feelings and ask that you share your comments on this topic.

I agree and share with your frustrations. I put mine up 2 weeks before the season and take down before the 2 weeks after (I am in PA). I have called the game commission about the stands that are left and they tell me the same thing you said that they do not have time. I wish it was legal for a person to remove them if they are up after they are allowed to be. I understand why they never allow someone to remove someone else's stand but our public grounds are turning into junkyards, not to mention that people are going to get hurt using these stands after they have been in the woods for several years. When my buddies and I are out we all take pictures of these stands and send them to each other. I hunt public land in 5 different counties and its the same thing. It is out of control. Great job on the video!!!!!!

OnX is great for e-scouting, but it is only useful once you get boots on the ground and make sure someone else has not claimed their spot a year in advance. Marking other peoples stands on my OnX maps has definitely helped me to find some places on Public land that are overlooked or where deer might go once pressure increases the end of October.

great video!! here in michigan you have to have the stand out by the end of the season. however you must place your name, address and phone number on your stand if your hunting public land, ware i hunt in michigan, i hunt both public and private, but ware my camp is, it's almost 400 miles from home and i mostly hunt public up there, but down here in southern michigan i won't step foot on public land. too dangerous. you have people who don't obey any hunting rule down state, and you have guys messing with peoples stands, to ware it's not safe to even try hunting that stand. like i said very nice video, and i agree with everything you said.

TY. Even if I see other peoples stands out in the woods off-season, I respect their property and don’t ever mess with some other hunters stuff. I have been very fortunate thus far to only have SD cards stolen. I cable lock all of my trail cameras and stands on public land. I just don’t want to hunt public near others so I scout my ass off to try and find overlooked areas. It’s not easy!

I deal with this every season, if the stand is left up, and the straps are faded, with leaves & debris on the platform, pull up rope chewed by squirrels, more often than not, this stand is abandoned, I use a climber & hunt near such stands and NEVER have seen a hunter use them. They often are deterrents from hunting a spot, indicates pressure, but have the opposite effect, people assume the spot is buggered up, or there's going to be a guy sitting there at first light and hunt elsewhere. Old treestands are often in good spots, so hunt there anyway. Once you get used to using a climbing stand, I use a Lone Wolf sit & climb, it's a game changer, way better than a saddle.

I have a Lone Wolf sit and climb I purchased this year from a guy doing moving sale. $75 bucks 😮! I just wished it was more comfortable. I can’t seem to find the sweet spot and stay still very long. However, on some public land I hunt there are not really very many trees fit for a climber.

I just found 2 more this past weekend scouting. One within 60 yards of where I had escouted and dropped a possible treestand location and the other literally 10 yards. I scout now in Feb/March and go back in May/June to determine exact tree stand locations, heights for sticks and hang on stand, direction the stand should face, etc. OR locations I might put up a ladder stand/hang on stand in the fall. I mark all locations of other peoples stands I find on public and put the date(s) I found them in my notes in OnX. If they are still there in May/June I will hunt there no matter if a stand is there or not if I think it is a place worth hunting. I just make sure that my wind is blowing towards their stand when I go in there to hunt. If they put the stand up legally in the fall I would respect that they beat me there and hunt elsewhere.

With how light gear is now such as sticks and stands there should be no reason to leave anything on public. Rules should be changed that stands shouldn’t be left in woods period. Take stands out with you same day.

Just playing devils advocate. What about a guy who follows the rules, has great ethics, is getting up in years, can’t use sticks and stand anymore, still loves to hunt and doesn’t have private land to hunt on? So he puts a 12 foot ladder stand out at the beginning of season and takes it out when season ends. Thoughts?

It did deter me from hunting those areas my first year on public. Now I really investigate the stand trying to figure out as much as possible to help me decide how and where to set up. I have Tethrd One Sticks and a Lone Wolf hang on so I can be mobile. Look up my video for my Redneck Ladder Stand. I use this for long walks in or places near/in bedding areas so I can be quieter getting in to my stand. This year I plan to buy 2 more of those Big Game hang ons. I am going to leave a 30” XOP stick at the top cable locked around the tree to the hang on. When I go in I will only need to carry my 3 One Sticks.

Here in Illinois it's illegal to hang permanent stands on public land. Hunters are allowed 1 stand per person All stands must be portable and removed at the end of each day as it should be. Be respectful of other hunters leave the woods as you found it pack your stuff in and out each day nothing worse than trying to hunt and finding the woods littered with trail cameras and illegally placed permanent stands. I talked to a conservation officer about this the other day. They said last year alone they confiscated over 60 stands from 1 piece of public land alone last year. I hate hunters who treat public land like they own it bring a climber or sit on the ground like you're supposed to. I'll report the location of every permanent stand I find to dmr so it can be removed

I absolutely agree that on smaller tracts of public, stands should be taken down. If they are less than a thousand acres, I would purpose mobile stands only. I hunt a National Forest and have 5 stands left to get down. Problem is, gates are now closed and we just got dumped on and have alot of snow drifts. Probably not going to get those stands down til Spring. I don't get to excited when I come across a stand in March or July, there ia a million plus acres to scout! Lucky for me, I rarely bump into another bowhunter when hunting the higher hills!

I definitely have not seen as many stands on large tracts in the Allegheny National Forest. An occasional stand here or there. Here in upstate NY it is out of control though. Small tracts of land and stands almost everywhere someone escouting would think to put one. That is why I put so many miles on my boots scouting. Just trying to find those areas that are overlooked or where I think deer might go when pressure starts.

I normally hang a stand a few days before I hunt any parts of public, and take them down a day or two after. If somebody hassles you about being in their stand, ask them if they'd rather you set another one up right next to it. ("Got the climber in the truck.
