I remember watching Magic and Larry play, the game was more fun back then, IMO.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!

I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. When Bird fractured his cheek, he was seeing double for the rest of the game. He had to figure out which of the two baskets to aim for, and he still dominated for a glorious comeback.

You can't tell a story about Larry Bird, without Magic Johnson, and you can't tell a story about Magic Johnson, without Larry Bird. Incidentally, their rivalry and friendship saved the NBA from almost certain death in the 80's. That's a really great story, highly recommend.

I'm a born and raised New Englander in my 50's and I was blessed to have watched Larry's whole career. Back then, the Red Sox owned the summer, the Celtics and Bruins ran the winter and we had Borque and Neely for the Bruins. And nobody paid much attention to the Patriots, but we all know Tom Brady changed that. LoL.

In college Larry's team was playing mine. We heard they had a potential all american on their team. So watching them warm up we tried to guess which black player was larry. Well, we were wrong, they won, he set the areana scoring record also with no 3 point line. He's the goat. Peace from Northern Michigan.

Players in the day feared this man, with good reason- he could hurt you in so many different ways. A GOAT without question- who by the way would be a monster in today's cushy NBA.

I totally agree with you. I was lucky enough to watch Larry and Magic play, and I am loving watching young fans see how insanely great this game was played. It was truly a magical time for a basketball fan. You should definitely watch his 50 greatest moments, his long pass was deadly accurate. He was so clutch, that Pat Riley once said "If I had to pick a player to take shot to win a game, I would choose Jordan. If I had to pick a player to take a shot to save my life, I would choose Larry Bird." I have always maintained that Larry Bird was the greatest all around player to ever play the game. The saddest day in Boston, was the day he retired.

I like your reaction & respect for players of the past. I’ve been a Celtics fan since 1968. Larry Legend is my favorite player. He felt a responsibility to the organization, teammates & fans to win games . What you don’t see in this mix tape is that during the Celtic- Pacer game where Bird fractured his cheekbone & had a slight concussion. After his 3rd quarter return, he was hit on the right side of his face by a Pacer & knocked to the floor. It took him a minute but he got up & continued playing. In the 4th quarter Chuck Person shoved him from behind sending him sprawling on the floor on his stomach. Again Bird got up & continued to play. I can’t imagine the pain of running up & down the court.

Go back and look at the end of the three point contest when he holds his finger up like "Number one." Look at his finger.

I remember watching several of the games where Bird was just majestic. I was watching when he scored 60 on the Hawks. There has never been another player that posesses ALL of the skills, like Larry. There have been some greats that have multiple skills but Larry was "as near perfect as you can get" and it shows. Thanks for the great video.

Every great player today from Jordan to LeBron should bow to those two in Bird and Johnson. The NBA was on life support and practically dead. The Finals were shown on tape delay in favor of TV shows like 77 Sunset Strip and Gunsmoke. We wouldn't even know their names after college. They truly saved the entire league. Bird was a 3 time Champ, 3 time MVP, 3 time 3-point winner but also NBA Coach of the year and NBA executive of the year. Nobody else has done that. Nobody. He also stands up for the greatness of today's players. He is truly special.

That was a great era in basketball, with so many all time greats, from Magic Johnson, to Moses Malone (who rarely gets mentioned anymore), to Dr. J, Pistol Pete, and many others. The game has changed so much, it's almost unrecognizable compared to those days. There are great shooters today, but almost no defense.

I graduated high school in 1984. I grew up right in the middle of all this action. The NBA is not on the same level anymore.

Coming to America in 1981 as an immigrant. One of my best memories was watching Larry Bird play basketball. Didn’t even know how the game was even played back then. But was hooked on watching him play. Such an amazing player. Always a fan of the Celtics and Larry Bird to this day. His basketball IQ was second to none. Love how we are still debating and watching a true great inspiring the next generation of basketball players.

My favorite Larry Bird story was, magic and Bird were at Bird's mom place to shoot a commercial and the took a break for lunch and larry invited magic to have lunch with him and Larry's mom. Larry's mom comes out and ask Larry, "did you tell him?" Larry goes, "No mom I'm not going to tell him. If you want you tell him." Mrs. Bird proceeds to to tell magic that he is her favourite player.

I've always been a Lakers fan but I was also a Bird fan. Magic and Bird were so fun to watch.

When it comes to the best of the best, all I ask is that Larry Legend is always in the conversation. You don't have to put him first, but to leave him out is just crazy talk. (I'll put him there by a smidge.) Cheers!

Greatest off hand shooter. Greatest passer. Greatest shooter from every range. Better rebounder than Patrick Ewing. LED THE LEAGUE in defensive win shares 4 TIMES! And still had time to make his teammates better by drawing the double and triple teams, constantly rewarding teammates with dime passes for getting open or downcourt early, always putting in effort scrapping for loose balls on the floor, and sweeping Michael Jordan TWICE in the playoffs. His hard play broke his own back and he still made the all-stars his last seasons, putting up great numbers. Oh, and did I mention over a 9 year span, Larry Bird got 2/3's of ALL MVP VOTES!!!

I’m older and when I grew up I as a girl of many boys had to learn how to play ball 🏀🏈⚾️. My boy cousins all wanted to be called LARRY. I couldn’t play with them if I acted like a “Sissy Girl” 🤨🤪. Later when my girls played basketball… I kept calling out plays naturally a habit and the mom’s were like you should assist the Coach and I was like i can’t do that my daughter would not like that at all. 🙆🏻‍♀️😝 Oh the nostalgia and great memories of hearing my family talk about LARRY BIRD. Bird used to practice three pointers with his eyes closed. I’ve never seen someone pass like he did. Watching Larry and Magic was a special treat. There was respect and friendship between them.

It's great you showed respect for past players. So many younger people disrespect them. Todays players display amazing athletic skills, but the game back then was so much more physical, you had to earn a win.

Kobe played left handed the rest of a game one time after tearing his right rotator cuff during the game. He only sat out a play or 2. I just saw a video about it the other day. He hit a wild fade away in the corner for 3 left handed.

The shot over the backboard didnt count because of the Wilt Chamberlain rule. Wilt would position himself on the side and just behind the board, then reach those arms out. Im 6ft7....in high school, i had a bad motorcycle accident....ruined my career...my number was 33,Byrd was and is my hero,i was a power foward....my last game was in 82.....i had to endure the pain and the want to play but watched Byrd and Magic dominate the 80s.....a side note...Maurice Cheeks taught me a lot about basketball in 78...i won a summer basketball camp at WTSU and Mr.Cheeks was my mentor that summer.....it changed my basketball perspective....i carried what he taught me throughout high school......damn motorcycle, i do still ride.

There are 3 GOATs and all 3 won 3 consecutive MVPs, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Bird. Bird also won several 3 point contests. No one has ever had the Court Genius that Bird had and maybe no one ever talked as much smack as Bird...and Bird backed up his smack talk with the results exactly the way he said things would go. This is why I say Bird is the unmatched GOAT of the court.

It's great to see another person around my age actually watch these guys. (I was born in September of 93.) So many people write these guys off without having seen them play. As you mentioned Larry was a progenitor. His game shows up in so many different greats. As you mentioned Steve Nash and Stephen Curry. Think of John Stockton and Jordan. A great underrated player I highly recommend watching is Mark Price. He played in the 90's and the closest thing I can think of to Bird at the PG position. This Intense white dude BALLER. I'm white dude too, so I'm a bit biased. The reason Price isn't mentioned in the same breath as Stockton is mainly longevity (Stockton played well over 700 more games than Price.) and Jordan was incapable of playing the Cavs before the Finals.

I grew up watching Larry Bird, Spud Webb, Domique Wilkins, Kareem, etc. Bird's passing game was as ridiculous as his shooting game. Dude even got his own rebounds. On the ar radio, you heard, "Larry Bird for 3!", "Larry Bird from the corner.", "Bird", "Larry Bird", etc.

I grew up watching Bird play. It blew my mind watching him. I'm glad a new generation is seeing how great the NBA and the stars were back then compared to now. It was a rough game back then. Fighting and punching were normal. Now if you sneeze near someone it's a foul.

I watched his entire career. Today's players get jacked over a 50 40 90 season. Bird was the 1st man to have a 50 40 90 season and he did it 4 straight years while averaging 28 pts a game

Please watch "greatest passer ever with re-edit" to see what an amazing passer Bird was when he played. Many think of Bird as a shooter only but Bird was the best all around player I have ever seen. Bird as a rookie went to a 29 win team and with a new coach and 1 player change to the team (ML Carr) was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game improvement. Bird won ROY and was 4th in MVP voting. For the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird created the 50-40-90 club and did it 2 seasons in a row. Bird entered three of the 3 point shooting contests and won all three!!

I was a Junior in High School when Bird and Magic came on the scene. It was the best time ever to be an NBA fan.

That Pacers game when Larry went off, he'd broken the orbital bone of his eye socket and NO reaction video I've seen yet has noticed this: @ 8:30 when he comes back out on the floor and kneels down, look at his eyes! Pure unmitigated determination and MURDER! He destroyed the Pacers after coming back. I watched that game as it played out!

I wish todays players would start using the hook shot again. Kareem said it was an easy shot to learn. And if Kareem said it, you can take it as gospel. So I would love to see them use that shot again. And Larry was special. Look at the talent he had to compete with. And his if his team didn’t win the championship, then whoever did must have had a fantastic team and very few mistakes. If you weren’t that good, or messed up too much, larry and his Celtics are gonna chew you up and spit you out. He was that good. And his team was too. With larry at the wheel, he even made his team mates better. Because he wanted to win. And he knew that one man can’t beat a team. So he made sure to focus on whatever is gonna make the whole team better.

I was never a HUGE basket ball fan but it was still a big part of my childhood, living in Compton I remember my dad leaving for weeks at a time for work as a truck driver (before the parent divorced) and it being late at night (for a kid) watching the Bulls and Lakers play in 1988 (i was 9) in my moms room because i couldnt sleep lol, I knew Larry was a beast but wish i would have payed a little more attention before so many of the greats retired ❤

What they were trying to depict there was the Lakers winning a championship and then the bird man winning the Celtics a championship. That's what you saw when they rushed the court. Just a couple facts. Larry Bird was one of only three men to win the MVP back-to-back-to-back. Larry Bird was the founding member of the 90%/50%/40% club. Larry Bird swept Michael Jordan in the playoffs 6-0. Michael couldn't even get a game. Now I love Michael but he's number two and Larry Bird is the GOAT. When Larry Bird's Indiana State team lost to the Michigan Spartans in the National Championship all his teammates were celebrating for having such a great season and Larry Bird said "no, I need to get better." Grew up watching these dynasties! As a white man, I side with Bird...born in Boston! These are the most powerful, significant players in my life. Magic and Bird were my highlights! I eventually respected the Lakers, and the crew, but I was a Bird fan!
