LED Turn Signals and Hyperflashing - Resistors vs. Relay

In this video, I replace the stock turn signals in my Toyota Prius with amber LEDs from JDM ASTAR. Since LEDs use less electrical current than incandescent bulbs, they cause hyperflashing (blinking faster than normal). I explore the two ways of correcting hyperflashing - replacing the blinker relay or adding resistors.

I recently converted my 96 Tacoma over to led and did the flasher relay and it was a plug and play. I tore my dash apart and pulled the fuse block to get to the flasher which was located on the back of the fuse block. After a few choice words I got the dash all put back together and while I was making sure I put everything back together correctly, I found out that I could have reached up behind the fuse block and pulled the flasher out that way! Oh well you live and you learn!

I recently bought front LED signal housing for my civic model 92-95. By manufacturer, when start the engine, the signal light turn ON solid. When headlight turn ON, led signal didn't fully OFF then ON. It dim a little and blink...very hard to notice on bright day light. If headlight is OFF.. the LED light blink like normal. The LED signal housing comes with LED resistor pre-assemble. Do u think I need to replace the OEM signal relay with the LED relay?

If it makes you feel better, I repaced the EL-12 flasher units on my car, (one for the indicators and one for the flashers) with special LED flasher units, and it didn't work, so I will have to go to load resistors. Secondly, you should only need ONE load resistor for each side of your car, not one for the front and another for the back, BUT all cars seem to be different in this area, so YMMV.

Well def not resistor vs relay , didn’t get to see the relay work. Rename to you vs Toyota! I have these huge resistors on my mustang signal bulbs and the headlights won’t fit properly back in their slot with the resistors, they also switch backs so it takes a full second or more to go back to white after using the signal, would relay fix that ?. Was wondering too if I have resistors in the tail light led already can I use the relay for front and it won’t affect them?

Does hyper flash damage anything ? Like mess with any ecu's or relays or other elactrical parts? I'm guessing it may burn out the turn signal led bulb slightly faster? I have an 08 prius and I don't mind the hyperflash. I'd like to avoid hot resistors and keep the led power savings.

Hyper flashing is basically a current signal sent back that says a bulb is out. If all the regular incandescent bulbs were left i and one went bad it would hyper flash. The less wattage with the LED simulates a bulb out. The aftermarket inline resistor boosts the wattage back where it was. Now the only benefit will be the bulb will last a lot longer however your saving no power. I just had a nightmare myself. Turns out my 2011 Ford E350 has no flasher relay it has a programmable box to adjust the wattage as needed. Has to be done by the dealer special codes. Resistors get red hot even when mounted so I switched back lost about $30 and a few hours and got over it. At least for my van. Next one I buy will have them already. Oh no I have two 72 Cutlass's I know they have a flasher relay I think here we go again

the best solution is to get a turn signal wire kit split 2 way or 2 of them or 4 way with electronic led flasher relay up 240 watts and fuse to connect direct to battery and then on to turn signal light's then purchase led light bulbs with fans or self heat dessipate the ones that dont need electronic relay nor resistors,, ,they still get hot,, if you can disconnect relay on car and or fuse,, some come attach to emergency lights, that is the best way cuase leds get real hot , relays for low current that fitare hard to find on some vehicles
