When you next see a 60 to 70 year old in the street just give a thought, they were probably rockin out to this like you were on Vinyl in 1969! We are all equal when it comes to appreciating music for the soul, irrespective of Age Race or Gender. And don't forget the African American blues pioneers who really influenced this music back in the early 20th century and in the main died destitute and largely forgotten..

I wouldn’t have heard Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Blind Willie if it weren’t for Led Zeppelin. Come on now. Can you say with a straight face that their music sounds the same? Bob Dylan was a Woody Guthrie listener. Even his lyrics were inspired by Dylan Thomas, the great British poet. Do you enjoy getting Zeppelin fans riled? Yep, it worked on me. 🙄

Dynamics baby! The song was written by Anne Bredon in the late 1950's and originally recorded by Joan Baez in 1962. Her version is quite folksy, like a song you might have heard sitting around a camp fire during a coal miner's strike in the 1920's. And while plaintive, her voice doesn't crack with angst the way Plant's does. It should go without saying, but the Led Zeppelin version is souped-up considerably.

Now, he 's Agonizing over having to leave her!! Or , so I've been told!!🎶
@johnmiller00004 жыл бұрын
It was originally written by Anne Bredon. Baez "rearranged" it and released it without crediting Bredon. Page took Baez' version and credited it as "Tradtional Arr. Page". Eventually, Page's economy of the truth caught up with him and Bredon received back royalties. So, yeah, a great cover version.

My interpretation is that he had to leave a woman he loves because he had the urge to travel the world and play music. But eventually that love would call him back home. "That's when it's calling me back home" coincides with a transition back to the softer acoustic slow ending. Led Zeppelin live was not a slow, stay at home by the fireplace band. But Robert Plant was married and had children. So I suspect he struggled to balance family life with being in one of the most popular bands of all time.

page's studio days let him see how bands were controlled. He was able to finance LZ-1 and nobody controlled them, but everybody in the industry were connected and pissed they did it there way, the critics were told what to say, the dj's were told what to play and their songs weren't 2:30 with a good beat and easy to dance to, which really opened up FM. The money barons never considered how good the music really was, that's why we're still talking about them 50 years later
@MJEvermore8534 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the critics hated Zep because they flat-out refused to play 'the game' like everyone else did...sucking up to the press, commercial promotion, going on TV, making cute little hits that were radio-friendly, being told how to play, what to play, and when to play. Led Zeppelin let the music do all the talking. And it's STILL talking, 50+ yrs later. 👍

Zeppelin's songs often fall loosely into two categories. Songs about meeting/loving/loosing, women. And songs about myths/legends/fantasy. 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' is one that crosses both themes. Plant would often tie in elements of 'home' being some place he has to go and can't come back from. 'Home' is possibly 'heaven,' so he could be an angel, and she will be there with him one day. It's one interpretation...

Simply amazing this song is a cover from Joanne buyers. And if I’m pretty sure that her version is a cover as well. The song is about a man going off to war. "I can hear it calling me back home" has a dual meaning here...so background, this is a cover of an Anne Bredon song (which Page didnt know when he credited it as "traditional" as did the others that covered it before LZ). The original Bredon meaning is something like trying to escape an abusive relationship and failing. Many people interpret LZs version as a longing to return to addiction, I've got to leave you...I can hear it calling me, but to me that seems wrong (this song was track 2 on their first album, wayyyyy before any of them got into drugs/alcohol) just based on timing. Some think its robert plants desire to chase his music career despite having promised his gf: "if I haven't made it by my 20th birthday (August 20, 1968) I'll quit"...he met jimmy page in late July 1968, their first live show was September 7th, and the album this song appeared on was recorded on September 27th 1968 and released in January 1969...some think this is an ode to his future wife of apology...but hey...it worked out :) it sounds like a love song to me, but he loves two things equally and intensely, misses both, longs for both, but to be with one is to be temporarily without the other... It suits their overall theme that love is often agony (nearly their whole catalogue are love songs btw)

This was solid, so solid I think for 1st try, 1st album release, with 1969 technology. Yes, @David Brown. Led Zeppelin didn't remix they "reinvented" Black American blues from Chicago, Mississippi, etc with a vastly different interpretation. I don't think he says WHAT was "calling him back home". Maybe he met a city girl but he had to get back to the country or vice-versa. I think the idea is mostly "I'm a free spirit and I gotta roam, can't settle down too long in one place" kinda thing. Close enough.

I am asking an honest question--can you explain why that is? I know music transcends everything, but it is puzzling why so many young people are listening when they used to just listen to rap and hip hop. Many whites did not get Zep when I was young ( I was 15 when I first heard them), so I am loving the reactions of today's young people. Cheers
