I had seen Zeppelin play No Quarter in concert in 1975 and when Jimmy Page begins his solo it is trance producing and John Bonham was in perfect sync with Jimmy Page. It was just fantastic. To this day I have reflected on that moment many times.

Led Zeppelin improvised extensively when playing live and created surreal atmospheres with their music. Imagine sitting in front of them and seeing this with the smoke and fog rolling off the stage amidst the changing light scenes. Totally hypnotic and mesmerizing.

Totally false. Many of their songs were better live than in the studio, and I'll name a few: Dazed and Confused, Trampled Underfoot, Kashmir, The Song Remains The Same, Bron-Y-Raur Stomp, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Immigrant Song ...I could name a dozen more

John Paul Jones on the electric piano. Zeppelin really were 4 equal parts and even if it was maybe hard to understand at the time, I can understand completely why they felt they couldn't continue without John Bonham after his tragic death in 1980. You just couldn't replace anyone in this band.

As always, thank you again for doing my pick! I’m glad we waited for this one, I feel you needed a good cross-section of Zeppelin before springing this monster on you lol! I think the reason Zeppelin was so good at doing so many different styles is because they first and foremost did it for themselves not just for the fans. Meaning they weren’t just trying to be different, they took all of their musical influences from growing up and as young musicians and explored them within this band. And of course it’s pure magic! I was privileged to be at this show at the Garden although at the time I had no idea how iconic it would become. Believe it or not you’re not running out of great Zeppelin songs yet, more to come! ❤️

With a group like Led Zeppelin one should listen to many versions of the same song. And at least also the studio version. There are things you can do in the studio you cannot on stage and there are things you can do on stage you cannot in studios. With Led Zeppelin each time there is a lot of difference. This version of No Quarter I didn't know although I know many versions. The adlibs/solos and what Robert does with his voice is unique once again.

No Quarter = No Mercy. The lyrics conjure up a vision of a group fleeing from their pursuers. One of them is wounded (The foot that's slow). They chose a path that no one goes to try to get away. I see Robert's love of J.R R. Tolkien in these lyrics. The music sets the mood, and Robert's voice complete the picture. One of my favorites.
@w.geoffreyspaulding6588

The Path Where No One Goes is a reference to the paths of the dead….which Aragorn reluctantly travels on his way to the siege of Minas Tirith in TLOTR. Of course we all have our interpretations of lyrics, but I don’t know how you get to “they were fleeing”. Quite the contrary, they speak of “carrying news that must get through, to build a dream for me and you”. They’re trying to sneak through the lines in a time of war….they have a message that must get through….to the commander of another army? They are headed directly into danger, not running from it.

Never ceased to be amazed by Jimmy Page's solos. The unlimited creativity that poured from this man was astonishing. His solos were never a continuous repetition of notes as so many others did but a journey that had a start, a middle and an ending. Each solo as unique to the song, so unique that you know the song after hearing just a few notes from a solo. The other thing is that the song was everything for Zeppelin and performances from any member was always to enhance the song and not overshadow it.

In my teens I saw The Song Remains the Same feature film on its release in UK. It was a mind blowing recording based in the Madison Swuare Gardens gig that included this stunning rendition of No Quarter. A few years later I witnessed the last live show performed by Led Zeppelin before Bonzo died. The show at Knebworth in 1979 was one of the best gigs I witnessed. I was a skeptic when I first heard Led Zep but they really were very special.

You heard a rocking 12:30 more guitar version from 1973. There is of course another 26 minute version of the legendary Earl's Court 1975, where JPJ "inserts half" a piano concerto in between. With The Rain song and Kashmir before it, it was a long music trip of around 45 minutes where some people were certainly walking on a cloud.

You are right about experiencing Zeppelin throughout your life, I first saw them in 72' then 5 times at Earls Court in 75' and then at Knebworth Festival in 79' and a few Plant & Page gigs later, and also some Robert solo gigs, the last one being 18 months ago, so I basically grew up listening to them and still listen most days....so you're right, I am a lucky person to have witnessed them as they grew.

Just think of the voice change as a "special effect," and I feel confidant in saying that most fans think it appropriate for this particular song, as it reflects the haunting lyrics and music. But it was definitely intentional and how the studio version sounds, in case you were in doubt, not something that was just an aspect of this live performance.

I think this live version just highlights just how good the two John's were at creating a groove and a feeling... The two of them created the basis for both Jimmy and Robert to soar. All four needed each other to be as good as they are.. Thank goodness Robert said when he was offered the vocalist position that Joh Banham had to come with him... I saw then the next year 1974 in a 3,000 theatre in Glasgow and they played this as well as everything else of course... but I can still remember it. Keep on Rocking.

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Britain as a whole didn't have that size of venue as establised in the US. That's been a fairly recent thing... Even foorball stadiums weren't used. A bit like when the Beatles played live in the UK... they were to biggest band around bt still played that size of venue in the UK,,, and then went over to the US and played Shea Staduim and Candlestick Park. In fact they were the band that actually started Stadium concerts. British bands KNEW, that if you wanted to make money the US was the biggest market and the promoters just saw dollar signs. After all.. Madison Square Gardens where Zeppelin played was primarily a Sports venue. Sorry for the rambling answer.
