Introducing Tifo’s new Writer & Presenter, Jon Mackenzie…
When Jesse Marsch was appointed as Marcelo Bielsa’s replacement at Leeds United he was touted as an evolution tactically, similar in style, but more refined.
But is that what his coaching style is really like?

Things to note here: Jesse Marsch is far from wedded to the 4222. Rather, he believes shape should be fluid to accomplish the goals of the match plan in pressing. And he has no problem changing the formation in-match to accomplish this (see the Salzburg vs Liverpool UCL match, where he shifted formation to counter Liverpool's buildup, and it spurred their comeback). He's used 3131, 4222,442 diamond, and variations of the 4141/433 hybrid.

In the last 2 games, Marsch went away from the Redbull 4-2-2-2 to more of a 4-1-4-1, using Harrison and Raphinha as more orthodox wingers. This also helped defensively, because with the narrow formation your fullbacks are not going to get much help from the wingers and the fullbacks need to be a lot better than ours are.

worth noting that a major reason leeds stayed up was marsch's willingness to be flexible on this ideal of centrality - that last two games saw Raphinha and Harrison playing much wider than he'd been trying previously. Don't think it's a conincidence that they were probably the two best attacking performances of the 12 games he had.

I like that you couldn't bring yourself to pick Rodrigo in midfield.

Considering we expect to lose Raphinha, and there is talk of interest in Harrison, Marsch will be able to bring players in that better suit his system. If one (or both) do stay, Marsch has shown he will change his system to suit his players strengths. Something Bielsa would never do.

I was a bit worried Jon would struggle to replace Alex but this was excellent. He explained the difference in the two styles so simply.

Interesting breakdown. In a way, it almost makes me even more excited for what Brendan Aaronson can bring to Leeds next season. He plays as an 8/10 for Salzburg but usually as a winger for the USMNT. So I think that experience of both positions (and his previous experience with Jesse) will make him a perfect add to the 4/triple 2 system and this concept of “wingers” who also play centrally, if Leeds continue to go like that.

Jesse Marsch was meant to come in after the season was over, whereupon he would have an offseason to make personnel changes and mold the team to his system. the owners, however, were worried about relegation and convinced him to come in early to try to avoid it, which he did. he now has the summer transfer window to begin to alter the personnel.

This video is spot on, I cannot understand why Marsh was sold to us as a similar style to Bielsa.

The man had 12 games to keep Leeds up (and preserve Bielsa's legacy in the process), and he did it. That is all that really mattered last season.

Tactic-wise, Bielsa and Marsch are good enough, but Leeds' players quality still couldn't accomodate the tactical aspect in order to achieve expected result. TLDR: Leeds have Prem-quality manager but with majority Championship-quality players.

i understand you need to make videos that attract viewers, but we do not know what Marsch will bring to Leeds. we know how he can triage a team someone else built to save them from relegation. (and let's not forget he was without his striker & without Phillips most of the time). but the first two signings of this summer show that Leeds will be a different team next year, and then we'll know what a Marsch team at Leeds looks like. but for now, we can only guess and extrapolate from what he did under emergency circumstances.

Im not a Leeds fan but I’m surprised to learn that the club explained Bielsa and Marsch as similar coaches as you alluded to. Marsch is a product of the Red Bull type of football, pretty different from the way Bielsa’s teams play.

The wide, man marking, possession based system wasnt working in 21/22 either. Im not defending Marsch but Leeds was a mess all season.
