A short history of America’s most iconic fly reel including when, where, and how it was created along with a story of a world record fish in Florida and another about how the great Lefty Kreh came to purchase a Medalist and how he modified it to suit his style.

I live in Broward county Florida and fish the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee regularly using..............you guessed it.......A Pflueger Medalist 1494. I have fished with this reel now appx 50 years and it keeps on going as good as new............the 6 wt rod was made custom from a Cabela's blank. This is an unbeatable outfit for plying the Everglades region for anything that will hit a popping bug!

Amazing video! Been trying to get into fly fishing but I hate the high tech look of all modern fly reels so I’ve been researching as much as I could about the medalist all night till I’ve stumbled upon your video which told me everything I need to know!

When I was learning to fly fish in the early 90s I went to a one day lesson taught by Lefty in Wintergreen Va. It really made a difference, I will always remember that day.

🌴always glad to learn sumthin new , I’m and old guy I’m so old when I fart dust comes out , but still have my first glass fly rod and medalist , picked it up at a yard sale back in the late 50’s with money I made cutt’n grass with a push mower , paid a whole $7 bucks for it but that was good money back then, can’t even tell ya how many fish were caught on it ,it was used on freshwater only , came ta Florida and been fish’n saltwater for the last 32 yrs , my how fly rods and reels and lines have changed I could of bought a car in the 50s at the price of a high end graphite rod and CNC aluminum reel todays cost , sure enjoyed the video, I’ll make sure to check out the rest 👍🏼

My first fly outfit was a Shakespeare Wonderod with matching reel & level 5 weight line. I wore out the click pawl on that one as well as a subsequent half-dozen Martin and Pfluger reels. I still have a couple of the made in USA reels.

Great video! I own a Medalist, made in the USA. 1494 DA. It's a fantastic reel and I picked it up at a secondhand store for $15 in my opinion it was a steal.
