Great video! I own a Medalist, made in the USA. 1494 DA. It's a fantastic reel and I picked it up at a secondhand store for $15 in my opinion it was a steal.

Amazing video! Been trying to get into fly fishing but I hate the high tech look of all modern fly reels so I’ve been researching as much as I could about the medalist all night till I’ve stumbled upon your video which told me everything I need to know!

When I was learning to fly fish in the early 90s I went to a one day lesson taught by Lefty in Wintergreen Va. It really made a difference, I will always remember that day.

I still use my whites 6000D that I got in 1980, it seems to work good in parks as I can eliminate the junk better than with my new digital machine which just works different than the analog machine. The garrett is much lighter and easier to use and goes deeper but the Whites just seems to be set up for coins.

1:44 is that a vintage Cicada lure? DORNS fishing has similar when I was a kid but don’t seem to make em anymore. My dad and I use to buy them about about 30 years ago. They looked different I bet this one beats those by a few decades!

I live in Broward county Florida and fish the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee regularly using..............you guessed it.......A Pflueger Medalist 1494. I have fished with this reel now appx 50 years and it keeps on going as good as new............the 6 wt rod was made custom from a Cabela's blank. This is an unbeatable outfit for plying the Everglades region for anything that will hit a popping bug!

I have a never used Fenwick Eagle Graphite Fly Rod with original never used fly fishing reel. From the 70's I believe. It was my dad's and I never had the heart to use it. It still has the original fly line that came with it. It's to beautiful to use in my opinion.

I have some outfits like that with sentimental value. My strategy is to take them out once, catch a fish (hopefully) then put them away where I can see and admire them. Thanks for the comment!

Hello Thanks for the tips! I was wondering how you can tell what KIND of Maker they are since the lures have no writing on them. How would you know that it's one of the more 'collectable' ones? Thanks!
@ShawnKimbro2 ай бұрын
It's tough if you have no idea. Most lure makers have some distinct identifiable characteristics but you still need a starting place like a collectible fishing lures book. Fishing Lures Collectibles is dated but good for overall identification. Once you get an ID, check eBay sold listings to get an idea of value.

Yes, they can be. Of course it depends on rarity, condition etc. but there is certainly a collectors market.

Most of my free capital went towards fly fishing gear back then, and a 300 was out of range for me. I do remember wearing out the bronze bushings on the more affordable Diawa reels of the day. I also remember routinely having to dig out the line that would get under the spool and wrap the spindle on those reels.
