Born in 1958 Mercurochrome kid here. We also drank from the hose in the summer. I knew an old time veterinarian who went to Auburn class of 1938 who actually prepped surgical sites with Merthiolate. He moved to Annapolis after graduation. He went fishing lots with one of his clients. He told me every spring they would load up trash cans of tide runner Sea Trout and Rockfish right off the mouth of the Severn. Dr Marvin Scham Rip

I still have bottles of merthiolate...dad and i both were pharmacists back in the day, when RX was honorable. Silver nitrate sticks 50 yrs old that still work, too.

I know two little girls who made sure their boxes were stocked with lots of candy before heading out for the day with their Daddy! 💞

My Mom would put mercurachrome on our cuts and scrapes and would use that wand to draw a beetle or snake over the wound as part of taking our mind off the cut or scrape! Somehow my brothers and I survived as well!

Oh my gosh I remember the “wand” . I can still see the little, brown glass bottle w the label and the plastic thing attached to the lid. No brush, but that plastic thing. It was also either the Mercurochrome, or Merthiolate that had a little plastic thing that had a slit sort of on the end which would magically deposit the infamous orange stuff on your cut. That Merthiolate stung 😝& we always hoped she’d put Mercurochrome on if we had a cut/scrape. & sometimes we got lucky! Born in 74 & my mom put that stuff on our cuts all the time. I survived just fine.

Oh yeah, I remember both Mercurichrome and Merthiolate, and which one stung. My Dad always said that the one that stung was better because the sting meant that it killed more germs. And yes, I also played with mercury from a broken thermometer, much to my Mom's displeasure. I also used to crimp lead split shot with my teeth, which is probably what's wrong with me now!

Remember them both well. Retired. Live in Arkansas. Fish a lot. Enjoy your videos very much. Give us more. My daughter now lives in Baltimore so I’m reading your Chesapeake Panfish book. I’ll be exploring Maryland crappie and bluegill hopefully if I can figure out local licensing requirements for non resident.

My wife and I have a vial of Merthiolate in our medicine cabinet! We got it as a wedding gift, so that should tell you how long we've been married...

Remember both. Anyone remember Hi-Power liniment? Man, talk about burning. But you had a scab already by the time you went to bed.

If Uncle Frank had painted his throat with gentian violet rather than mercurochrome he might have made it to 100. 😁.

Hilarious! I’m so glad you mentioned Gentian Violet. Our son’s pediatrician always told me to paint his poor little tongue w it when he was a baby & got thrush. I looked at his baby pictures when he had purple lips & thought oh buddy! I always wondered what it must have tasted like!
