Something similar happened to me when I was in elementary school. My mum dropped me off at school, I walked up the stairs to the building, the school yard was empty. No one was there. At first I thought, "Oh, maybe I'm just too late.", but then it dawned on me that that's not the case. Then I started wondering, and even years later I still can't understand how I got there, how I would survive up here. Didn't take long for my mum to come back and pick me up. There were people working on the house across from my school and they were laughing when they saw us walking to the car. It was a damn holiday and we all forgot about it.

I'm a step mom of 5 kids. I only know one of my kids (12m) and I have been there for him whenever he needed me. I've known him for a total of 2 years but he calls me mum (my fiance and kids are australian and I'm american) and comes to me if something is going on or if he wants to talk. In the last 2 months alone I have talked him through being bullied, his parents (mum and stepdad) fighting and him feeling like an outcast at school. I will never not be there for that boy. I am the only partner my fiance has had that he has liked or even called mum or said I love you to. He may not be blood but he is my son. Granted that said I will never jump straight into something without talking to my fiance and my sons mum about it first. She and I have that kind of relationship where she knows I will immediately let her know if something is going on in his life that needs attention. First words out of my mouth are usually "have you talked to your mum about this or do you want me to?"
