I learned all I need to know about Joel Meyerowitz from watching a previous Leica launch event. He stood around after the festivities had ended, and the celebrities had left, and spoke to a young "unimportant" man for quite some time - as if that young man were the most important person in the world. He didn't have to do that. Being a *great* photographer is nice, but, Mr. Meyerowitz impressed me more as being great person...

Mr. Meyerowitz is incredibly wise and inspiring beyond words. I have encountered him on Instagram and he is unfailingly gracious. Which is mind-blowing because he is so famous but not once, not twice but several times he has revealed himself to be a good and generous man. Saludos de Costa Rica.

Excellent interview that clearly illustrates the complex process of creating a life dedicated to photography. Grace and seriousness, generosity and honesty with which Joel Meyerowitz tells us about his life experiences and work, an admirable example of a man who has dedicated his life to a job that is much more than telling visual stories is living them; Joel has made us experience everything behind his memorable images. I also congratulate Hugh Brownstone for the successful interview and of course Leica Camera who is part of the history, memory and visual culture in the world. Applause.

One of the best Joel Meyerowitz interviews I’ve seen. Loved the extra info in his origin story of how he was favored at the design agency by the owner. I’ve never heard that part, only the part where he meets Robert Frank for the first time. Also, great story about the girl at the party image. Meyerowitz is always inspiring.

Thank you for this interview Hugh. A good host facilitates the guest to impart knowledge, wisdom, humor, loves, concerns and story telling. Thank you for doing just that. My favorite Carson episode was the one where Johnny let Robin Williams take the reins & in walked Jonathan Winters & Carson knew he had something special happening. Thank you for not making it about the hardware, and above all, thank you for not telling Joel to "hold that thought"! (😉 In jest sir!) This was your best & Joel's best yet!

About the point that its about the human behind the camera and humanity, I agree, I see it as starting with ”why”, why we enjoy photography, instead of ”what” we will photograph or ”how” to photograph it. I believe this is one big reason for Leicas success, you start with why. Instead starting with the ”what” like specifications, its not only about making the objectivly most perfect lens through calculations, its about the experience using it. Its about the experience using a Leica camera, thats why its so hard to describe why you like a Leica camera, it just feels right, i would never even compare specifications between a Leica and a Canon. Both makes great cameras but Leica just feels right, it fills my emotional needs aswell as cognitive and physical, its a experience i want to have. And when you start with why, the how and what seems to work too. Leica just happens to have the highest possible quality in everything they do, but they start with why they make cameras in the first place, and thats about something else then specifications. If you are interested in this subject checkout Simon Sineks talk about “start with why”.

I love Joel Meyerowitz - his work and philosophy are impeccable. Hugh Brownstone is just not my cup of tea - not for me, but seems like a lot of people here like his delivery and diatribes so I may be missing something. I appreciate the effort - I just have a tough time making it through Brownstone's droning, but admirable effort with good research and connectedness to the subject.
