I enjoyed and appreciate the video, thank you! I looked at Lems when I was boot-hunting last spring, but passed on the Boulder because of the tread. I wanted snow/mud/wet-capable. (this Outlander model didn't exist then) I went for Vivobarefoot Forest ESCs and I love them more every time I use them. I'd love to see the result of you running a pair through your 6-month wringer like this :~)

I’ve been trying to get them to send me a pair but I think I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and get them myself. The big difference I see between them is the sole of the vivos is significantly thinner if I’m not mistaken. I’d be super interested to see if that sole could take the same abuse as the outlander

@@severshoots I see info on the website that the outsole itself is 2.5mm plus 7mm lugs, but not what the total depth including any midsole might be. In my experience, ranging from pavement to pretty rocky stuff, those lugs give good protection from sharpness, but the shape of them and all those articulations between them give a great feel of the shape of what's underfoot. I'd say go for it. They have a 100-day no-reason return policy, too.

This might be a little out there, but I think the average person probably has a much wider foot than they think. The Brannock device that people commonly use for sizing doesn't take into account your foot shape or bridge. I come in at a standard D width on Brannock, but I can only fit in EE footwear or shoes made with a wide last like Lems. I guess what I'm saying is wide feet really aren't that wide, it's just how our feet are supposed to naturally be.
@severshoots
@severshoots Жыл бұрын
That’s super interesting. My feet seem wide to me. But Lems just sent me their Mesa which is the slimmest profile they make, and I feel like I have plenty of room 🤷🏻‍♂️ I just got some Splays as well….. almost too wide 😂 but I’m sure there’s someone out there with massively wide feet who would find the extra width refreshing
@winterroadspokenword4681
@winterroadspokenword4681 Жыл бұрын
@@severshoots Me 😂😅 I appreciate the extra width in shoes. I’ve always bought wide shoes and as at least size bigger than I need lol. It’s only since barefoot shoes I’ve been realising how short my feet actually are. Sizing is always a nightmare though. The size 11 Boulder boot is barely long enough, the 11 Chelsea boot is probably too long. But it’s definitely not too wide.

Good video! Thanks a lot. I’ve ordered a pair (have 2 other lems shoes, these will be my first bf “boot”) I’m going to test them out with a view to wearing when i walk the camino de santiago. That has a lot of pavement, as well as rocky surfaces. While i don’t want pillows strapped to my feet, i do want a bit of cushion. How did you find these for cushioning??
@severshoots
@severshoots Жыл бұрын
They’re great. The rubber they use is very responsive. Keep in mind, there is no midsole, so it’s rubber from the lugs all the way to the insole. We’ve done some very technical and long hikes in these and everything else wears out before our feet do.

It's good to see that they stretch out. Would they be too hot for summer and does the sole compare at all to Vibram Megagrip? I've been in the Megagrip or bust camp for a minute. The best shoe i've found for that is the Olympus 4 but i'd like something less cushioned. Also, i'm like you regarding drop. I have a pair of Topo Mtn Racers and even with the 5mm drop my back starts to hurt. 3mm is about as high as i can go. Thanks for the review!
@severshoots

I used them for work starting in June. I never had any issues with them being too hot. As far as the sole goes, I think it’s money. Super grippy in the snow and just thin and flexible enough

Glad I watched your review! I've had the green ones for about 5 months now. Far less mileage than you, but I still find them too tight in the toe box. Specifically my pinky toes feel the squeeze. I thought they would break in with some light use from daily activities, but they haven't changed much. Looking at your old vs new comparison maybe there's still hope if I pack on some real terrain mileage. I've always worn trail runners for my trail duty, hiking, running and otherwise. Primarily I've worn the Outlanders as water proof snow boots so the usage has been gentle, just wet. Curious if you got your "normal" boot size or went up a size?
@severshoots

I’m not sure what you mean by the 2mm drop designation. Lems currently advertises them as 0mm drop. Am I missing something?
@severshoots
@severshoots Жыл бұрын
Ya they’ve switched back and forth on the website. I found out it’s because the material in the sole is squishy and will compress over time depending on how you walk. Either your heel will drop 2mm eventually or your forefoot, just from the compressive forces. It’s minuscule
@winterroadspokenword4681
@winterroadspokenword4681 Жыл бұрын
@@severshoots fascinating. All my shoes become drop in the end, Cos just like your boot, the ball of my forefoot does all my heavy lifting when I’m walking. Wearing down ten times faster than the rest of the sole. If I could buy a shoe that used a reinforcing durable rubber there I would lol m.

I got a pair today and on the website it say's its zero drop, they must have changed thier mind again 🤷‍♂️
@severshoots
@severshoots Жыл бұрын
Ya, so I asked my rep and she said that they were “accounting for compressive wear” when they gave it the 2mm designation. Apparently depending on whether you favor your heel or your forefoot when you walk, one of those will compress around 2mm overtime giving you a negligible drop of some kind. I think they’re going to stick with the zero drop designation from now on

Since making this video and wearing some 4 mm drop shoes myself, I agree. Lems changed their designation of this shoe back to zero drop because they realized that the compression of the rubber overtime would create only up to as much as a 2 mm drop which in my opinion is insignificant.

They were accounting for compression of the EVA layer over time when it said 2mm. They start out 0 drop so they just changed it (and honestly 2mm is negligible)
