Eric Clapton was not trying to copy Jimi Hendrix. He was honoring Hendrix by putting his own interpretation on the song. It's a mistake to draw a comparison between them. Both are exceptional talents, but completely different.

Yes and I enjoyed the little mistakes he made as a lot of it he was improvising on the spot! And I love that about good musicians, that takes guts and skill. (Yes the old ‘there’s no mistakes in music’ quip) a good guitarist will no what I mean, when Eric or any one does a 12 fret slide up and is a semitone off, or a gap where they missed the note. In fact I’d rather hear it warts and all, as long as it’s honest and from the heart.

People forget (or don't know) that Hendrix was influenced by Clapton. The main reason he came to England in 1966 was on a promise he'd meet Clapton. He had already heard of him from the John Mayall Blues Breakers album. Hendrix was in England only a week when he sat in with Cream and totally blew everyone away - Clapton included - with his version of Killing Floor. Very soon after, he put together The Experience as his answer to Cream. They were close friends until his death.
@TheCapedWanderer11 ай бұрын
People forget (or don’t know) that Blues Breakers was one of if not the most important album for electric guitar in the 1960s and the rock solo at large. The tone on All Your Love, the ferocity on Have You Heard; never been topped since. Busted out of ‘66 like a freight train on ice. And yes the stories of the two of them club-hopping in New York City are heart-warming. And the left-handed guitar Clapton bought and planned to give to Jimi the day before he died... Tragic. They would’ve been friends for life.

Imagine being a master of the instrument and making a legendary song your own way just for some randoms on YT to call your performance not like Hendrix's. That's the point people Hendrix is Hendrix, Clapton is Clapton and so on. All guitarists have their sound. They shouldn't sound the same. Imagine Hendrix playing all along the watchtower like Dylan, we would never have this legendary version. And at last there is no better in music simply because music is not a competition, it's not sports.
