Before you were born, the tv broadcasting day would end early in the morning and there would be no more tv until maybe 5 or 6 in the morning when the stations would start broadcasting the news and morning shows. Lenny was the first lead singer for the group Tower of Power.

What he meant by the television going off is that at the time television stations would shut down around midnight or 1am. Something like that, and there were not a lot of stations back then.

1978 revised version. Television programs were not on 24/7 back in those days, the screen went black or color bars after 1-2 a.m. Towards the end of this song, he had a new love/woman he had just met. Classic song.

Yep television went off. I know when we used to be allowed to stay up that late you had to go to bed when television went off because there was nothing else to do. I would imagine Lenny feeling the same way. Television kept his mind preoccupied somewhat so all of his thoughts were not about his loss, but once television went off all of those thoughts just totally overwhelmed him.

I remember as a kid born in the 1960’s when the tv station would sign off at 1am on weekdays and 2am on weekends and all we all was snow to watch. Those from that era know what I’m talking about. And remember the rabbit ear antennas made from clothes hangers!

This song was from an era when television only had 3-10 stations and at the end of the night, there was a signoff and all channels closed until the morning when programming came back on. So, this generation has never known anything but 24 hours of programming. I laughed that you were perplexed at that. It solidified that I am old, though I was only 4-5 years old when that song came out. It is a hidden gem to many of the newer generations. Glad you gave it a listen. Men in music no longer provide such deep vulnerabilities in their music. This was the golden age of R&B.

Probably the most powerful love song ever sung. And yes, before cable tv, television actually went off the airwaves back in the day with the National anthem. The gist of the song is redemption from a situation that seems unbearable. ❤❤❤

@@michaelasay8587 imo politics is no longer the answer, there’s not enough people in politics to care about the whole country or the whole world. Groovy tune! I believe he sang lead on a Tower Of Power song titled So Very Hard To Go! He must have had some other projects, but I'm not aware of them! His voice is all over the place, and that's a compliment because not many people can do that! Really deep message that I'm sure a lot of people can relate to but not admit openly! Powerful stuff! Wow!

Yes, this song made him the crying man because he broke it down about how a man feels when he is singing to the woman he loves!!!! This is true old school music 🎵🎶, telling a woman how you feel about her and even preaching to her!! New school music talks about what you can do for a woman sexually but there is no longer any feeling or heart and soul ❤

Awesome song I’m almost 58 and when here this I think of my wife because when I met here I was going thru hell in my life if been divorced for 6 yrs (not of my doing) and then I saw my wife at a Pay phone (yea they were still around 10:26 10:26 20 yrs. Ago) and she smiled at me as she was on the phone and that was it and she’s still my wife 20 yrs later , and yes in 1975 T. V. would go off at 12:30 to 1:00am and come back on at 4 to 5am , my oldest child once asked “what do you mean dad , that tv would go off?” And said to her exactly what I said tv would go off lol , the good old days when men where men and women where women nothing was difficult like now and a love song was a real love song when sang about something they where really going thru it in other words the songs meant something!!!! God bless the sixties and 70’s and R&B ……

You correctly identified this song as epitomizing R&B. So right you are! The "oh oh...oh oh oh oh oh" provide the song's rhythmic structure. It's similar to what jazz singers do with "scatting". This is the rhythm portion of "R&B". The "Blues" portion of R&B is provided by the subject matter: a lost love. Since you really seemed to like this song, I have a listening suggestion for you to consider. For years I wished that Al Jarreau would cover this song. His scatting would add another layer of texture to it. If you're not familiar with Al, I'd like to suggest you react to the German television broadcast of him performing, "Take Five". While it is a video performance, it's important to see AND hear how far one can take this singing style.

Yes, back in the day, way before cable and digital TV, by like 1 or 2am, television would actually shut down until about 6am. Then, at 6am, the national anthem would play and television would come back on. If you haven't already, you should react to, "A Song For You" by Donny Hathaway.

Hey Angela great reaction. Some consider the best love songs ever recorded. Lenny made you feel every note, every syllable...heart wrenching. So tickled by your comment about the TV 📺. I know I'm telling my age lol, but before there was this thing called cable, TV 's would actually go off air(sign off)with the singing of the national anthem. And would come back on air at 6am. This was why there was so much radio play back in our days. Late nite music like Quiet Storm, Slow Jams....r&b at it's finest. Damn the memories ❤❤❤. Thanks Angela

Oh my word, this was a spectacular "red pill" reveal right here! Thanks for reacting to this, Angela! This song, the story in this song is exactly what men "think" women like to hear, both verbally and in songs. But your reaction was more of disgust - and trying to hide it. Were you thinking a little like "what is this simp wimp singing?" That's why you didn't like the story enough to want to play it - because it sounds kind of weak and putrid. He goes over to his girlfriend's house and he sees a car outside and she doesn't answer the door - yeah mate, she's probably getting her back blown out! Poor Lenny, he put everything into that performance!!!

Some of your viewers in the comments have no clue...but he lead sung with Tower of Power (So Very Hard to Go, This Time It's Real, Don't Change Horses in the Middle of A Stream, ect.)on a lot of their hits and did 3 albums with them before he went solo again and had success. Great singer songwriter. Lots of music but this song is probably one he is most known for even though it was never released as a single. Check Lenny out with Tower of Power 1973-75 and his song Don't Make Me Wait For Love w/ Kenny G. He has a beautiful voice.
