The first round of testing is almost complete, and there's just one thing left to do: throw some 38mm fans on the cooler and see how they rank against the standard PC cooling fans. You might be surprised by the results!
Here is the spreadsheet with all the data if you're interested:

Now this actually has me wondering about stacking a Scythe Wonder Snail 120 and a Gentle Typhoon since they're both very similar but the snail spins the opposite direction.

would be interesting to see if the howling / turbulence could be avoided with some flow straighteners 🤔

Loving the spreadsheet. Phanteks T30 looking real good, wonder how a 30mm or so thick noctua fan would be like.

Ive always been so disappointed noctua seems not at all interested in making 38mm thick fans, in the 120 and 140 category especially.

I started looking for some insight on how to cool a Nvidia Tesla P40 GPU with a 120mm fan and ended up binging your video serie. I must say this is great, straight to the point content. You did a really good job. If you have the time, you should test Sunon 38 mm fans with your setup, as those are often way cheaper and more accessible in some areas :)

Here's my prediction: Turbulence against heat exchanging media is always the the #1 priority for cooling. Static pressure importance will depend on whether resistance to flow is bottlenecking turbulence or not. I would reckon that in some cases, too much static pressure performance might actually reduce turbulence, depending on the exact properties of the heat sinks and how they interact with the fan blades, mostly in terms of the shape/layout/etc. of both, mapping out how the air flows at/past them and where the turbulence appears. There may be great spots on heatsink media for turbulence, but too much straight through fan power might lead to the air bypassing those spots instead of going right into them. By the same token, insufficient fan power might do the same. It would depend entirely on the media/fan in question and how they interact including how they're spaced/shaped, etc. Likely it would be a case by case basis.

I'd be inclined to agree. Many heatsinks are designed specifically to promote turbulent flow across the fins (holes, kinks and tabs) and I'll be testing that with the next cooler. :)

I'd love to see the never talked about Silverstone FHP-141 possibly. I bought one to be a rear exhaust fan on my hotbox of a Fractal Design R5 and eyy it's doing a good job for that.

Great idea - I have had my eye on it ever since it was released, but have yet to actually get one. It's a bit of a monster!

The YS looks terrible in its class which I expected immediately upon seeing it and its terrible blade design and huge blade to frame clearance. It's obvious more and more fan manufacturers are moving to close that clearance for a good reason. It seems to be a legitimate pressure optimization feature. And yet the TA450 did worse on temperature. I wonder what other property is counteracting what looks like better blade design at first glance.
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
I had the same thought about the TA450DC - it could be something simple such as lower volume flow through the cooler, or it could be a more complex matter of less or more turbulence, both of which could have an adverse effect on forced convection. As for the YS Tech, the blade clearance looks poor because of the shape of the frame and the camera angle; the gap is actually bang on 2mm. For the TA450DC it's about 1.6mm, so they're very similar in that regard.

@@FanPhys huh, weird, it looked like 3-4mm.

For me end of the day like pc fans are optimized for noise performance is what matters most. Specifically, at pretty low noise levels. I cannot state the actual volume, as using some app on my phone may be a reasonably precise way of measuring, it is not at all accurate. On load I often find throwing more air at the problem is not the best option, especially for a not too power hungry cpu. According to software my cpu runs 650rpm and my case fans run at 750rpm. For this reason arctic p12 and p14's work reasonably well for my uses.

Yep the P12 would probably be adequate for most people on the planet x) It's a fine budget fan, despite the cheap quality motor. I'm interested to try the P12 Max because there's a different motor in it.

You're making a fair few claims and assumptions that don't make a lot of sense to me as a PC guy and Mechanic... Without knowing the air flow rate which thanks to fluid dynamics there is a direct interplay with of High flow low pressure, High pressure low flow as well as the power its taking to move the air or create the pressure then I do not see how its possible to say much of anything about how well a fan has been engineered to do either job.... You're overlooking impedance and matching the fans pressure/flow characteristics for efficient cooling to the impedance/resistance to flow of the cooler which turbulence is certainly going to come in there but I think impedance is more important here for why you're not seeing a direct relationship between the pressure and temperature. Also fans flex and stuff different ammounts and different blade counts and such all play into how effective it will be throughout its RPM range so 2x arbitrary data points there I think is likely missing a lot... You really need a better more accurate setup and to measure pressure, flow and energy consumption through each fans entire RPM range so you can properly start to compare them IMO. One of the very first things I remember being taught as a mechanic is "Pumps can be designed to make pressure or flow, not both" and when I look at that Noctua P12 even just with the few data points given here if I stack that with the rest of my experience in PC fans that makes me really want to see the flow of it and power consumption because to me that looks like its been designed for pressure in PC cooling applications where the others you're saying are designed for pressure are more server/data center stuff. I played with a heap of those doing case mods back round 03 and they are interesting and cool and I had a lot of fun with them but they're just not PC fans and makes little sense to me even having them in the lineup and to me just shows that you're still learning and I think instead of telling us what you think is or is not a pressure fan you should flip this around a bit into a learning for yourself experience rather than teaching so much 👍 I'm enjoying it so far, is well enough filmed with decent audio and I love the old gauges and home setup and stuff....
