Hi everyone. Hope you guys are doing alright.
This is a video of me upgrading the RAM and SSD of my Lenovo Legion 5.
As you may well be aware, the Legion 5 series runs AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs, specifically the 4800H in mine.
I bought this laptop from the official Malaysian Lenovo website. In the website you can customize the laptop according to your required specification and budget. I'll post the link whenever I come around to making a video on my experience buying from Lenovo website.
I placed the order at the end of July 2020 and received the laptop about a month later. The laptop actually shipped from China and the current pandemic doesn't help making things go faster.
Anyway, the thing that I found most strange when I was customizing the laptop was that the RAM configuration maxed out at 16GB DDR4 3200 in dual channel (There was also no way to configure it to 16GB single channel).
As I did more reading around the laptop on Lenovo website, its manual and just generally searching the net, there was no mention of the maximum capacity of RAM supported. The only thing that can be confirmed is that this laptop got 2 user replaceable memory slots.
At the time of placing an order(end of July 2020), DDR4 3200 SODIMM is a bit of a rarity in Malaysia, to the point where there's only a few sellers selling them online and the price was a bit too expensive. So I decided to chose the 16GB config in dual channel as my old laptop was already rocking 16GB of RAM(albeit slower ones) and going for less is just a downgrade. Also thinking should I want to upgrade later once prices are a bit more reasonable I can just sell the 16GB RAM kits.
As I mentioned, I received the laptop about a month from when I place the order. By that time, DDR4 3200 SODIMM became more common and prices were reasonable. Especially with online promos from vendors. So, I was able to get a couple of 16GB DDR4 3200 SODIMMs for about RM 500 (A touch more than USD 100).
However, still felt a bit anxious as there's no confirmation as to whether more than 16GB of RAM is supported by the laptop or not. The only thing is when I go to AMD website, the Ryzen 4000 series (Renoir) does support up to 64GB of RAM. Whether Lenovo supports it or not, that remained to be seen. Not sure why Lenovo don't offer higher than 16GB config, may just be due to limitation of parts supply.
Anyway, follow along to see whether my upgrade was successful or not.
SPOILER: My laptop works just fine up till now after the upgrade
(video was recorded in September, but since I'm a major procrastinator, only now managed to finish editing)
oh, do check with your local warranty policies before attempting anything shown in this video. I will not be held responsible in case any damage occurs to your laptop etc etc. Try at your own risks.

MUST READ BELOW! My experience so far after checking out this Legion 5 AMD. How to buy - Right now not available in stores, but go to store ask them to order one and after 4 days later, get it in store itself. Legion 5 AMD 4600H/4800H - 79,000 / 89,000 1. 4600H/4800H - Top most mobile cpu you could get in this price(far better than 10750K) 2. 1660 Ti is perfect for 60+ fps with ultra settings with all and even latest AAA titles. But in here 1650 Ti is still better, it only 20% performance drop from 1660 Ti. 3. Crucial 3200 CL 19 - 8GB RAM - Dual slots(one filled & one empty) **If you are a heavy user, just get an additional 8 GB(it should be the same RAM model)from Lenovo showroom itself** 4. SK Hynix NVME 256 GB SSD - Great speeds 2K/1K of R/W. **If you want upgrade SSD ask the store swap a better 960 Evo(3K/3K of R/W) for C Drive** 5. WD HDD 1TB 5400 - Good terrabyte storage ** Gamers - If you want faster loading speeds, swap the HDD for a 860 Evo Sata/M.2 SSD. It will only help in faster loading speeds, not gameplay. **Video Editing/ Content Creators - Definitely, swap the HDD for a 860 Evo Sata/M.2 SSD. 6. Display - 250 Nits. But 300 would have been perfect. ** Gamers - 120Hz is nice. But NO Freesync / G sync. **Video Editing/ Content Creators - 72%NTSC is perfect for color accuracy, but it has 45% NTSC. My opinion-you can later get a good display for professional works. 7. Great cooling system. Simply desktop level performance from this beast of a Legion 5 It is solid Laptop in this price range. BEST BUY LAPTOP IN 2020. 1. HP Omen AMD 2020 is very similar to Legion 5 AMD2020. (ALSO A BEST BUY LAPTOP IN 2020). 75,000 2. Don't consider HP pavilion Gaming. coz Omen is so value in 75 k price range. 3. Acer Helios 300 2020 - Also a very good Laptop. 4. Asus Zephyrus G14 - Also a very good Laptop. 5. @@reshad711 hi. having 2 sticks of RAM means it will run in dual channel, which will give you better performance. a system with say 16gb of ram (8gbx 2 sticks) will run faster than 16gb of ram(16x1 stick). of course, it also depends on your use case. in most day to day usage, eg word processing, content consumption you may not even notice the difference between running the ram in single or dual channel. however, if your use case involve some memory intensive work, then you may see performance improvement. hope this helps.

@@reshad711 hi. brands don't matter as much. I personally would buy the cheapest ram from a reputable brand. what's more important is to match the specifications of the RAM. in this situation, if you're adding another stick of ram to existing one (I'm assuming ur laptop does hv 2 ram slots as I'm not as familiar with the tuf15) the best thing to do is to buy another stick of same capacity, 16gb and same speed, 3200. if possible try to match the latency as well( although this may not be as clearly labeled) this will ensure that your laptop won't run into stability issues. hope this helps. thanks.

Hello, nice video, thanks for sharing! One question: I noticed you're using the genuine Lenovo Legion notebook stand, how do you like it? Would you recommend it? I'm asking because it is quite expensive if bought in my region and there are many other cheaper alternatives out there...
@masterofnone4608
@masterofnone4608 3 жыл бұрын
hi. thanks for watching. I quite like the stand because it's made of solid aluminium and feels sturdy. also because of the fact that the legs can be fold flat. I don't know how much the stand cost because I got it for free. When I bought the laptop, lenovo did a giveaway promotion on the website. basically if you bought a Legion, you enter your email and home address and if you're among first 500 or something they send you some free stuff eg cap, water bottle, laptop stand, and headphone cases. so I was one of the lucky ones. maybe I'll make a video one day of what I received. that's the thing about lenovo, they always do some quiet promos on the website and sometimes the way the website is arranged don't make things too obvious. so, to answer your question whether it's worth it. if you think it's expensive and there are cheaper alternatives, then it's not worth it. personally, if I was looking for a laptop stand, I'd buy a cheaper one with probably some fans etc. functionally, a cheap laptop stand would function just the same. hope this helps😊

@@masterofnone4608 Thank you very much for your extensive reply, much appreciated! 👏 I agree with you about the quality of the genuine stand, especially the flexibility which allows to use it in different configuration of height and inclination. This is something quite unique and not easy to find in alternative solutions. Unfortunately the retail price is very high in my Country, the equivalent of around 70$. Of course the opportunity to buy it at a significantly reduced price would be a no brainer but at a full price it's not an hands down decision. However it's nice to know you find it a quality choice. Thanks!

unfortunately can't give you definitive answer. looking at lenovo's configurator they only allow up to 1TB for each,but as you see with RAM just because lenovo offers up to 16gb that doesn't mean that that's the maximum it can support and the manual for legion 5 also did not specify a maximum limit. I would imagine there's no reason for it not to work, but I myself don't have a 4tb drive to try. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

hi. thanks for watching. right, if you plan to install an m.2 nvme ssd on the Legion 5 as secondary drive, it's pretty much plug and play. if it's a virgin drive(ie never been formatted/installed before) then you may need to format it first before it can detected and used. Below is the link to the video where I installed a brand new secondary m.2 nvme ssd on my Legion 5. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdGHp5uDyNqwmXU.html now, if you're talking about installing an m.2 nvme ssd on an older computer(ie one that use hard disk or sata ssd as boot drive) as a boot drive, you may need to enter the bios of the laptop and ensure your laptop is set to uefi mode(this will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer) before you can use your new nvme drive. that is pretty much the most important thing to do before installing a new m.2 ssd as boot drive on older system. you can clone your old drive etc etc, I personally just do a clean new install to make sure my new drive is not bogged down by any weird settings/driver from old drive. it's a bit difficult to go into detail here in reply, I'm sure there's many video on KZfaq that can show you how in great detail. hope this helps. thanks😊

hi. unfortunately the screw from dummy disk won't do for the nvme. it needs a 3x2mm screw. some nvme do come with the screw, some seller would some time include the screw, some pc case/laptop do come with a screw pre installed and some times unfortunately you have to buy the screw separately. the main thing is to check when buying whether the screw is included or not. it'll be very frustrating to find out that you're missing one tiny screw after opening up the laptop and about the install the nvme. hope this helps.

Good evening! , newbie about laptop. I just want to ask some tips or things to do that you can recommend to me on using my New laptop. I will also raise some questions about my Legion 5. I’m still not unbox it because I don’t know what’s first thing to do and honestly, I’m actually panicking. I can’t find any good tutorial on what things to do first when I open it. 1. Are we making system image? 2. Bios? 3. Is anti-virus needed? Because on store it says that windows defender can do the job. But if it’s still needed, what can you recommend? 4. Empire points? 5. How can you prolong the battery life of legion? Can I full charge the laptop after use or even if not? 6. What software or apps you would recommend I should install? These questions I get from other viewers but still not complete. I will be happy if you will give your “STEP-BY-STEP” Tutorial on the things I should do as I use my new laptop. Lenovo Legion 5 Gaming Laptop, 15.6" FHD IPS 300Nits 144Hz, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6, Windows 10, 16GB Memory, 512GB PCIe SSD Thanks for answering! Will be much appreciated Sir!

@masterofnone4608 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for watching! First of all, congrats on your new laptop. Don’t worry too much about it. Just unbox it and enjoy it. Cortana will pretty much guide you step by step for your initial set up. 1. You don’t necessarily need to create a system image if you don’t want to. Creating a system image when you first boot the laptop will create a backup of your laptop when it’s at its purest/cleanest state. So should your system crashed or something you got a clean slate to go back to. I personally don’t do it because most of my documents are backed up in the cloud and if anything goes wrong I would just do a clean install. But, periodically backing up your system is a good habit. 2. You can think of the BIOS as the rudimentary operating system for you computer. BIOS allows all your hardware to communicate to each other at the most basic level. Sometimes you need to go into BIOS to change certain settings such as boot sequence and the like. An average user would probably never access the BIOS in the lifetime of the laptop. Even upgrading common things like RAM or adding additional storage usually would not need going into BIOS. 3. Whether you need anti-virus or not really depends on how you use your computer. If you mostly use your computer at home and connected to trusty networks, and you don't plug in random thumb drives, and you don’t surf dodgy websites or click random links in random emails, windows defender is adequate. I unfortunately use my laptop for work, and it requires me to connect to the office network which is teeming with viruses and sometimes require data tranfer from random thumbdrives so I used an anti-virus for additional security. I used bitdefender mainly because it’s fairly cheap, performed well and it’s not a performance hog. 4. Not too familiar with empire points. Don’t think they offer it in Malaysia (where I live) 5. In the legion vantage app, you can set battery charging to conservative, in which the battery won’t be charged fully, only to about 60-80%. This in theory would reduce the charge cycle and prolong the battery lifespan. Charging and battery are pretty smart nowadays, so you can actually leave your charged plugged in and it shouldn’t cause any problems. 6. This would actually depend on what you using your laptop for. I know this answer is not very helpful. I personally like to keep my system clean and not have randow software take up the space and potentially affect performance. However, on most of the computers that I used, these are the common software that I install( not in any order nor this is an exhaustive list) - PDF reader( I usually just use the ADOBE one) - WinRAR (can unzip pretty much most format) - Chrome - VLC (plays most media) I hope this answers some of your questions. Don’t worry too much. Turn on your computer and explore it. The likelihood of you breaking it is very low, if you use it normally kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNljobyZ3N2am3k.html This video from Hardware Canucks also pretty helpful in setting up your computer for the first time. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

HELP ME OUT! . I want to add RAM to my Legion 5 ( 15ARH05 ) ** Current RAM Kingston LV32D4S2S8HD-8 ** I am on a tight budget so I was wondering if it's ok if I... (I have taken note of this factors: 8GB, DDR4, CL=22, Speed=3200MHz, SODIMM, CR=1T. anything else?) . I was thinking if buying **Crucial CT8G4SFRA32A** is ok or is there any other better option? hi. thanks for watching. in my video, I also used RAM sticks from different brands, one is Kingston and the other is Adata. As long as the specifications on the RAM sticks match, you shouldn't have much problem. I personally would just go for the cheapest RAM sticks that meet the specifications and from a fairly reputable brand. this would vary slightly between countries. but crucial is a fairly well known brand, so as long as you think the price is reasonable(I can't say what's the best price as I found ram prices almost doubled in malaysia compared to one year ago, I don't know whether the same thing is happening where you are). hope this helps, thanks for watching😁

hi. the short answer is no😁 the long answer is if you just adding a larger capacity drive to an empty available slot in your laptop/pc, it wil be recognized as additional storage. it will not automatically become the boot drive. the os will remain in the original/old drive and will be loaded from that drive. in the bios, you can actually specify the boot sequence, eg. drive c:, drive d: etc etc meaning that the computer will try to boot from all the drives on the laptop in sequence until it find the Os. hope this helps. thanks for watching😁

hi. thanks for watching. the term solid state drive(ssd) is a general term for a type of hard drive that don't use spinning discs. Hdd is a term used to describe traditional hard drives. When talking about SSD per se, it can be broadly divided into two types, Sata ssd and pcie nvme ssd. sata ssd comes in the shape and size of traditional hdd, ie 2.5 inch and uses the same sata power and data connector. pcie nvme ssd uses the m.2 standard, so the motherboard needs to have a built in slot that support this. the advantage of sata ssd is that you can pretty much install it in any pc/laptop that support hdd because it uses the same connectors and take up the same space. it's also relatively cheaper compared to pcie nvme ssd. pcie nvme ssd tends to have much faster read and write speeds compared to sata ssd(whether u'd notice it in real world use or not is dependent on ur use case) and they are priced slightly higher because of that. they are also much more compact and don't have separate power/data connectors. Now, with regards to the Legion 5, in total it has two m.2 slots for pcie nvme ssds and one sata connector for either a hdd/sata ssd. usually one slot is already populated with an nvme drive from the factory. out of the 2nd m.2 slot and sata, you have to choose to use either one as populating one slot will physically interfere with the other(if put nvme ssd, sata hdd/ssd won't fit and vice versa). so configurations that would be possible for the Legion 5 are: 1. 1 nvme + 1 sata hdd/ssd(2.5 inch) 2. 1 nvme + 1nvme in terms of heat, you shouldn't be too worried. nvme ssd do get warm but not the point where it can cause problem for most real world use. to be honest ssd are generally much more reliable than traditional hdd due to lack of moving components. this is especially true if you always carry your laptop around. hope this helps. thanks😊

hi. thanks for watching and sub😊 ideally, to minimise instability, and ensuring the system is working at its best potential, yes, you want to match everything, voltage, latency and speed. However, if you do run a mismatched stick, usually the system will run both sticks at the slower speed/latency. having a mismatched sticks will increase the possibility of instability, but milage may vary. so, if you're buying a new stick of ram, I suggest you try to get one that matches the one in the laptop. however, if you already have one lying around, I'd just try installing it and see how it works, it won't damage your system, rather if the ram sticks don't like each other, you probably hv instability ie crashes etc. hope this helps. thanks.

hi bro. agreed, for gaming and most work really, 16gb is more than adequate. Personally, the only times when I notice the difference in performance between 16gb and 32gb are when I'm working on a large photoshop projects eg 20 feet banners or something that has several hundred layers. I bought my RAM sticks off shoppee, would love to share the links but the sellers that I bought it them from both had sold out(bought during the 9/9nsale). the brands of the RAM don't matter so much, more importantly to check both RAM sticks have same specifications eg voltage, speed and latency. having a mismatched ram sticks may not necessarily cause damage to your system, but may cause stability issues. buying same model from same brands would ensure the ram sticks hv same specs or if you really want to be sure, buy a ram kit of your desired capacity. hope this helps. thanks😊

hi. thanks for watching. based on Intel's specification of the 10300h, it only officially support up to 2933 RAM. ideally you want to match your RAM sticks, mainly to ensure optimum compatibility. Though as a recent linus tech tips video shows, you can get away with mixing up RAM with little issues. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLqDY9yTtpnQc30.html with regards to your situation, My recommendation is wait for the matching ram to be available, because to be fair 8gb of RAM is pretty usable still. However, if you really need 16gb NOW, for some reason, my opinion is to go with the 2666 one, as the faster RAM will match itself to the slow one and it's a speed that is supported by the cpu. I'm not recommending it, but that's what I would do. Bear in mind, this is only an opinion, nothing evidence based. I do not have the system nor the RAM stick to test this out. do it at your own risk. hope this helps. thanks.

hi. u don't necessarily need to do anything to the pre installed drive to install the second ssd. but, if the ssd is new and never been formatted before the system may not automatically detect the new drive. However, if ure replacing the old drive, then you need to prepare to reinstall windows. u need to go into disk management to first format the drive before the PC can detect it. for laptops I suggest using and ssd with a very low profile cooler or no cooler at all. the laptop already hv a built in heat spreader. for most normal use ssd don't need an external cooler.

hi. it's best practice to disconnect the battery before doing any upgrade to minimise the risk of shorting things out. I definitely not demonstrating the absolutely correct way of doing things. I'm just lazy, sorry. so do as I say, not what I do. with that in mind, in this laptop replacing the ram and storage is relatively easy, so the risk of you causing a short is very low as everything is fairly easily accessible. as I mentioned in previous comments, I have yet had any problems by not disconnecting the battery while doing simple upgrades(not a valid excuse) . but of course, be reasonable ie don't go poking about the pins/trace with your screw driver. with regards to the battery, I don't think you should be too worried about disconnecting it. Lenovo in its manual for this laptop even highly recommends disconnecting the battery before doing any upgrade, so the likelihood of your laptop not turning if you connect and disconnect the battery is pretty small. again, common sense, power down the system before disconnecting the battery, don't pull on the battery cable to remove it(there's a clip at the connector), don't poke the battery with sharp objects and don't disconnect the battery when windows is updating. you should be fine. hope this helps😊

hi. I would think you'd probably notice more performance gain by adding another stick of RAM so that the system runs in dual channel rather than adding a ram stick with better latency. if you plan to add another stick of ram, ideally the speed and latency of the ram sticks should match. adding a lower latency ram stick to your system may not be beneficial as it won't run as fast as it should(limited by the slower ram) and may cause instability. unfortunately Goodram is not a brand that's available in Malaysia and I wouldn't be able to tell you in terms of compatibility. hope this helps.

removing the battery before performing any upgrade is definitely good practice. it will ensure that no possibility of power running through components and thereby reducing risk of causing short circuit and damaging the laptop. I didn't do it because I'm just lazy, and removing the battery clip is way more work than just removing the RAM. If you really want to minimize the risk of damage, yes do remove the battery, I personally never had issues upgrading a laptop without removing the battery but that's not necessarily the right/recommended way of doing things. hi. thanks for watching. so far my laptop works fine. no issues at all. the extra ram is most noticeable (for me anyways) especially when I'm working on large photoshop projects with loads of layers.for gaming, not so much. yup, you can definitely do that, though I'm sure there'll be people who are adamant telling you that you should only increase capacity in capacities of 8, 16, 32, 64 etc etc. to be honest the main thing is that the speed of the ram should match, eg ddr4 2933, ddr4 3200. if you were to install a slower or faster stick, the overall ram speed will follow the slower stick and may potentially run into stability issues. no, it will not damage your laptop, but may potentially cause it to crash a bit more. to be honest, in most real world use you'd probably notice more gain from the increased ram capacity. I'm from Malaysia😊 somewhere in South East Asia.

@masterofnone4608

hi. I don't quite understand what u mean by fit. if you meant physical size, just make sure you buy sodimm(small outline dual in line memory module) which is the standard size for laptop RAM modules, NOT dimm modules, which are meant for desktops. if you meant the specifications, I just try to match the specs that Lenovo use, ie DDR4 with 3200 speeds. you may get it to work with slightly slower or faster RAM, but to minimise chance of incompatibility, I'd just try to match the factory modules spec. Brands don't matter as much, the spec matters more. Adata may not be available in your country or marketed under different name, but pretty much any brands should be ok as long as the spec match. hope this helps.

hi. thanks for watching. if you are adding a stick of RAM, basically you need to match the spec to the existing one to ensure optimum compatibility. For example, the Legion 5 15(amd cpu) is equipped with ddr4 3200 ram, so you need to buy a ddr4 3200 ram stick. while Legion 5(intel cpu) comes pre installed with ddr4 2933 RAM, so you need to get a ddr4 2933 ram stick. As long as you're reasonably sensible, the risk of damage is quite minimal. Lenovo even have a detailed manual on how to disassemble the laptop. Just Google it. The most challenging aspect really is getting the back panel off. once you got it off, you got easy access to the RAM, drives, WiFi card and battery. the main thing is to take your time and be patient. youtube videos always make it look easy but don't feel discouraged if you needs a bit more time. hope this helps😊 Thanks.

in my experience, for normal work ie presentations, office works, the battery usually last for around 3-4 hours, however if I was doing video editing or gaming the battery would drain out by an hour or so. if you planning to do some intensive work, you have to plug it in I'm afraid. but this is based on my laptop which has the 60wh battery, and I also turned hybrid mode off and brightness always around 75%. so your milage may vary.
