I thought the prior edition Yoga 720 was a nice upgrade from the 710. The 730 vs. the 720 is more of a minor update but it does include a quad core vs. dual core processor and has a wider amount of bandwidth on its Thunderbolt 3 ports (4 lanes vs. 2).
This is a nice 2 in 1 for its $799 asking price and a good choice for those looking for a mid-range laptop.

As a 720s owner, there's a quick workaround for the fans when you're just doing normal stuff: go in power options--advanced--processor power management--max processor state--set it to 98%. That'll disable the turbo-boost and increase battery life. Plus, it's more than enough for normal tasks as a quad core. I leave it at 100% for AC power.

Running that Speedometer test on Safari running on my 2017 iMac I get a score of 96.6. So is the Yoga almost twice as fast as my iMac for browsing the web?

Great review, thanks. Are you sure that the Thunderbolt 3 has 4x PCIe3.0 lanes? The old Yoga 720 had problems with a slower TB3 port which couldn't handle two screens (only in copy mode). If I rely fully on those TB3 ports, I must be sure they are as fast as stated.

It looks like a Spectre the way things are made (back, display bezel, etc.). I hope it is better though, HP's convertible quality control is quite bad...

I heard lenovo hates linux in the way that the bios isn't right for linux OS's. Can Lon specify if this is indeed true or not? I'd like to know.

There are some 720 models with the 8th generation of the i5 and i7. The only difference I see is the added 4 lane support for the TB3 ports.

The 720 also comes with a 16gb memory, 1TB SSD, and 4k options. With the price drop becasue of the 730 release, it is a much better deal with these options.

Great review like always! Hey I was wondering why they call this the 730 because I have the 720 with the 8th gen cpu so Im not for sure why they made a newer model if its not much of an upgrade

The 720 is rocking a modified 2017 version motherboard (I think it's the Z270 vs Z370 or B250 vs B350 compatibility thing) and the 730 has the 2018 motherboard with updated chipset/bios. That AND... On the 2018 720 as well as the 730, you can get up to 4gb of 1050 GPU whereas on the 2017, you get 2GB if you get the GPU option. ONLY difference is the chipset is older I think on the 720 (probably trying to get rid of older motherboards). Not worth it to get the 730 if the 720 8th gen is cheaper. I have the 2017 version 720 with 7300HQ and 2GB 1050 and love it.

Great 2-in-1 for the price. Only issue is that there (as of 6/22/18) isn't a 1050 option unless you get a 2018 720 15" or the 730 15". I like to casually have the option to game on my laptop and having the 1050 on my 7300HQ 720 15" makes all the difference (having the GPU, you loose charging over USB-C on both the 720 and 730, but that is a trade I live with when I am docking it).

I heard about the screen flickering issues on the yoga 730 and largely ignored it because I thought it wasn't a wide spread issue. However, after 2.5 months of ownership of my 13 inch Lenovo Yoga 730, the screen flickering issue appeared and rendered the laptop unusable. Opening the bottom lid, I found that the display cable was being pinched due to the yoga motions and the electrical tape bundled around the cable was frayed. I just sent the laptop in to be serviced, but the drawback is that I will be without a laptop for possibly weeks. With the screen flickering and the Realtek wifi card disconnection issues, which also afflicted my model, I can't recommend this laptop. On the plus side, Lenovo customer service was pretty stellar in my experience.

Yeah, no problem. Rending the videos may be slower without a dGPU.

Preston 136 There are quite a few lower cost options from Lenovo, especially if you don't mind working on a Chromebook. I'm digging the 300e and 500e that Lenovo recently released.

I got it and returned mine. It had poor battery life and currently there's an issue with the CPU being throttles down under base-clock (like around .4-.8 ghz) when the GPU is active, making it unusable for gaming. Lenovo says they're working on a solution, but no BIOS update as of yet. In other words, right now you're paying for a 1050 you can't use. Follow the threads on the issue in Lenovo's forums and wait for confirmation that they've actually fixed it before buying.

Yeah, actually after some research I decided to not buy Yoga laptops at all, regardless of 13 or 15. A lot of people were having screen flickering issues with the 13, and to me that's big red alert towards longevity. Meaning I don't trust what might happen to the Yogas in the long run. I set my eyes on the Dell XPS 13 but it was still not good enough for me since the price is not appealing. So after 1 week of research I actually found the Huawei Matebook X Pro and what an amazing laptop that is. Who would of thought that one of the best laptops of 2018 came from Huawei. But yep, going with that with strong confidence. That 3:2 screen real estate is mind boggling. No other laptop in the market has that even. 14 inch high quality screen with 91% screen margin, a mac-like quality build, and the same 8th gen cpu. awesome 👍

I have had it for six months. It worked well. Just recently I got a flicker, so had to talk to tech support, and they asked me to return it to them. Will be away 3 weeks.

Nope - Lots of known issues with the early yoga models... bad hinges, that break and can crack the screen and loss of touch screen function being the big two.
