Totally agree with you here about Nakaya. A Nakaya pen is a work of art, plain and simple. Some people buy art, some don't. It's a personal preference. In the end, if you can afford something beautiful as well as serviceable, why not? As a fountain pen enthusiast, one ends up 'collecting' pens that gather dust, simply through the act of discovery. Through discovery, one learns one's preferences. For Japanese pen aficionados, Nakaya is the pinnacle of what Japanese pens have to offer. If I could sell every pen I have for a Nakaya, I would. After all, one only has two hands and one life. Why not let it be both useful and beautiful! Love the expressiveness of the stub nib and nice shading to that ink.

I couldn't say it better!

Understood. (All fountain pens are only as good as their nib and feed.) Since Platinum/Nakaya (as well as Sailor) have perfected their nibs, what's left is the beauty of the body. It could be argued, why pay for the body material if the less expensive writes the same? Still, art is art. If one is a connoisseur and can afford it, why not?

Yes...this is how I justify my many many Sailor pens...yes. Jokes aside, I love Sailor nibs, might as well get them with pretty bodies!

Hi Leo, I just got this weekend directly from Japan my Nikaya Piccolo Writer with Kuro Tamenuri finish, M nib and the new metal thread, I have to say I simply love it, certainly worth the money. Very soft writing experience. Looking forward to sharing with you my experience in the next few weeks.

Like the way your video fits alongside your written review (I came across from FPN having read your piece there).

Thank you for taking the time to see both! Some points inevitably overlap but the written versions get pictures, while the video usually has extra unrelated content or cool locations.

Been a subscriber since you started uploading your videos. Love them. I especially like when you cover Asian pens as those are the ones I like the most. I'm curious, what is your favorite ink brand and your favorite ink color? Thanks and please keep up the videos.

Thank you for your continual support and comments from the very beginning! It may not be completely obvious, but I do like Sailor. (if the last trip loot was any indication!) my favourite is still the Pro Gear but in EF, and while Iroshizuku has amazing colours, Sailor Jentle Oku-yama is closest to me on a personal level. Close friends of mine like it best when I'm writing to them with that combination.

Leo, you did something that very few people do well. You navigated what can sometimes be a razor's edge when it comes to extolling aspects of the pen that appeal to you without sounding like a "fanboy." Being a fanboy is not in and of itself a bad thing, but the finer points can be lost. BTW, I love the line on that stub and it looked very smooth. One question: Would call the Sailors pens returned to you are having more feedback or scratchy? Btw, as far as traditionally-sized nibs out of the box, Sailor rocks. How do I look at Nakaya? GRAIL PEN!

Thank you. This was the toughest review I've ever had to make and had to do my due diligence. Sailor pens in general have good feedback. Having said this, 14k EF nibs tend to be a sore spot for Sailor and have a tendency to be crappy, requiring after-purchase attention with micromesh. So most of Sailor's lineup have good nibs, but I would only purchase 14k EF nibs in person.

After almost two months of using my Nakaya Piccolo Writer Kuro Tamenuri. Highly satisfied with the writing experience and urushi lacquer finish, pen size and overall look. Can't wait to get my second Nakaya, Portable Writer Aka Tamenuri 😃

I love the local color in all your videos. The one with the Custom 823 that you did, showing Hong Kong harbor from the Peak, was especially nice to see as I'm currently reading the novel "Noble House", set in that unique place. As for this review, thanks for candid views about Nakaya. It is a divisive brand, but one of these days I'll succumb and buy a red one. It's the ultimate expression of a Japanese luxury pen without getting into the huge prices of Maki-e.

Thank you! I love making those too, even though I have to be really careful I'm not yammering on for too long.

My Nakaya had bubbles in the urushi on the section. Nibs.com contacted Nakaya for me and had a replacement shipped to them. Other than having to pay for me pen being shipped to LA and back to me, it cost me nothing to get the problem fixed.

Great service! I'm glad it was sorted out without hassle. On the other hand, I can see some people arguing that this sort of thing should not be happening at all at this price point and quality. I'm just happy mine turned out fine.

I'll look into it! I'm currently working on a different video right now, and then I'll reevaluate what needs reviewing. Thanks for your input!

What do you mean the green is unintended? Green color is one of the options as far as I know.

You're right! The written review has the correct facts, I was just confused for the longest time about the colours.

Hi Leo! Thanks for really good review! I've looked at Nakaya pens some time ago and find myself drawn back in because of their beauty. You mentioned re cracks and Nakaya refusing to cover such, but what about seals, wear and tear etc. Do they offer warranty? And if not, can these things be fixed any technician, or is it the case that pen must be returned to Nakaya for repairs? Interested to hear your thoughts, or others? Thanks again!
@InquisitiveQuill7 жыл бұрын
Nakaya pens don't have any seals that I know of. General wear and tear, probably not? No warranty has ever been mentioned. They might fix some breaks though, I recall reading a lady's Cat Nakaya chipping at the cap lip, and they glued and tied up the area with string or something. Quite wabi-sabi as it were. I'm afraid I have no personal experience with Nakaya warranty, if any! The cracking was from a secondary source, I might be able to speak more on it after doing more research and asking around, when I review another Nakaya. (if I ever get a second!)

Thanks for getting back to me so quick Leo. And if I can somehow delude myself into thinking....sure I got other priorities...but wouldn't it be special to get this pen!! Only live once...and blah blah. Will keep you posted. And lord above...where did you do the review of this pen??? I thought maybe this dude on lunch break at work or something:)
@InquisitiveQuill7 жыл бұрын
Haha, be careful about getting one, another might follow! This was done on a weekend on an overpass between a hotel and a busy mall. We like to try filming in all sorts of locations now and again.

I'm thinking of buying a piccolo, I'm just worried about the size, most especially that of the grip section. How does it compare to the Platinum 3776 and the Pelikan m800 in that respect? Hope I can get some help. Thank you.
@InquisitiveQuill4 жыл бұрын
Very similar in length and girth of section!

@@paulirineomontano5074 sorry, numbers don't really mean much. It's best if you can go to a store and try one or both of these!

Eek! Cracks in Nakaya? Where? Spontaneous cracking in the finish or the body or edges of the cap, whaaat? Cos urushi is very durable. Hmm. Good review - and I like your drawings.

Get back you in a few weeks! I'm going to be meeting up with a bunch of pen people in the next month and I'll be able to acquire a tonne more information and a larger sample size of pens. (Thank you for the compliments!)
