About the Japanese written on your paulownia box. 特製萬年筆(tokuseimannenhitsu) means a special fountain pen. 中屋万年筆謹製(nakayamannenhitsukinsei) means that pen carefully created by the craftsmen of the Nakaya fountain pen. The word 謹製(kinsei) is mainly attached to traditional Japanese products. Kimono, Japanese sweets, Japanese tea, folding fans, etc. Your 碧溜塗(hekitamenuri,hekinuri)looks beautiful like matcha, a traditional Japanese tea!

I’ve never seen a urushi finish in the flesh. Looks lovely. Maybe some day when I get to visit a pen show. My only really expensive pen is a Platinum 3776 Karakusa (incised celluloid chinkin). My collection runs to only about 2 dozen, and only 3 were over $250.

Lovely review, thank you. I must admit, you touched on what probably has kept me from purchasing a Nakaya .. besides the price. You touched on it whist discussing Montblanc and Visconti as examples of prices. I do find value in such things as filling systems, materials used, unique designs, etc (not saying that you don't), and find that to be somewhat lacking with Nakaya pens. I realize the primary attraction is the finishes and their nibs (correct me if I am wrong), but I must admit I am not a big fan of the only Platinum I've purchased, the 3776 ... so I've been hesitant to try any other Platinum products. With that said, I am still drawn to the IDEA of Nakaya as a 'grail' pen. I can appreciate the workmanship, and the to that end, I have even purchased several ebonite pens to try them out. One being a Ranga 4C (looking forward to your eventual Ranga Review), and the Santini Italia that I commented about in your Santini/Flex pen review. I do like the feel of ebonite, and with the inclusion of a piston filler in the Santini, I can say that it has become a favorite pen of mine. I use the eyedroppered Ranga as a daily pen at my workbench for customer correspondence. I have even considered picking up a lesser priced urushi pen to see how I would like it and to get a sense of the lacquered feel of the finish. But I figured at this point, if I'm going this route, I might as well go 'all out'. So ... maybe a Decapod? or possibly a Dorsal Fin 2??? How about a Ferrari and a yacht to go along with it? LOL Anyways, I know what I like and also try to keep an open mind. BTW: I am a watchmaker and collector ... I can't help but wonder what watch you're sporting in the video ... the Pilot's watch, type B dial, automatic, onion crown, leather strap, 2 rivets ... Laco Aviator?

How do you compare medium/fine nib? Can I request the artist signature?

I agree about the Pilot inks. I use Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki yo and Kon Peki and they are both superb in mine. They are a great but unfortunately very expensive ink in the UK. I buy mine from the EU with 20% discounts when they’re around. Enjoy it and make sure you use it a lot. Brilliant 😀👍🏻
