Should you take Milk Thistle or Silymarin for your liver health? Some take it for alcohol related liver disease and some take it for fatty liver (NAFLD, NASH, Steatohepatitis, Fibrosis), and cirrhosis. In this video we go over the evidence behind using milk thistle.

I had my gall bladder removed 2 years ago. I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease last February (2023). My NP put me on Milk Thistle ASAP. Along with changing my eating habits and exercising more and also using Apple Cider Vinegar w/lemon water, I was able to not only heal my liver but I do not need to take Ox Bile for my missing gall bladder. Milk Thistle works for me.

Hey Jared...I am about to get my gallbladder taken out (I have a 0% ejection fraction that was found with a HIDA scan). I have taken milk thistle before as a blocker/liver support for other supps that I was taking when I was working out regularly. Glad to hear that you're doing well and don't need to take Ox Bile. I've ordered it and will do a self-trial and see how it goes. Any tips/tricks for before/after? What was your recovery like? Were you an outpatient or were you admitted? Thanks...

Forget a brand! Buy some milk thistle seeds and grow them in a pot. It grows so fast and easily and is a perennial. You can eat the leaves young and once it flowers and goes to seed, harvest the seeds and make tea out of them. The stalks/stems are also edible.

As a type 2 diabetic in “remission” with an A1C of 4.8 without medication, it’s hard work to keep those values. I supplement with MT because I can use every bit of help I can get my hands on. A fatty liver has also been a concern although no indication in lab testing. Life long piss poor diet and sedentary lifestyle led me down the road of declining health, and fighting to keep things turned around.

My holistic dr put me on it in 2009, after having issues walking and sitting up. I thought it was some work in the Honda from 2003 to 2006. I thought it was the concrete. She said it’s not the concrete. She said there’s millions of people working at Honda and they don’t have this issue. She said it’s the liver toxicity. After three days of taking it, I’ve never had that issue again.

Given that Milk Thistle is non-toxic and shows promise, what is the harm in recommending it?! No offense, but Physicians generally don’t hesitate to prescribe Pharmaceuticals with known toxic side effects, so why the hesitation to recommend a non-toxic NATURAL substance that shows promise as long as it’s indicated that research as to efficacy is ongoing?!

I love to eat thistle! It's a crunchy, clean tasting stalk when peeled. But I've never taken this supplement. I am allergic to latex, so I wonder how I would react to this? I am waiting to get my blood tests back to see if my strict diet has helped my NALD. I would dearly love to lose wt. but being disabled and living with severe chronic pain it is so hard to do any exercising regardless of how mild it is. I have been much more active lately and no longer have the symptoms of GERD, IBS, no diverticulitis flares, and best of all no more esophageal reflux with aspiration! But I was so disappointed that I had not even lost 10 lbs in the last 6 months of dieting. I've never been obese in my entire life until the last 10 years (after 50). I am so tired of all these health issues~

I can eat anything, (A&W cheddar cheese burger with fries) except white rice, and my blood glucose barely budges, even white rice though it spikes, is not drastic. My glucose remains in the "Normal" none diabetic range, through the day. Its just in the morning (fasting) it elevates into pre diabetes range. 5.7 to 6.2. All other blood test were normal. Maybe MT will push it back down. Thx for sharing. 😊😊👍👍 PS I used to take MT years ago when I was on daily acetaminophen with codeine, and was worried about liver damage. Hi there. I've got some Milk Thistle supplements that are 7500mg. But they state on the back - "80% SILYMARIN: We have used a high strength extract that is rich in silymarin, the major active constituent contained in Milk Thistle. With 150mg of pure silymarin in every capsule, you can rest assured that this product is of the highest natural potency." Does that mean it would be safe to take more than one capsule a day, as there's only 150mg of silymarin per capsule? Or is the stated 7500mg true?

You might consider looking into going low oxalate diet. Oxalate is a plant toxin that is found in many of the common foods we eat. In the gut it can be like little microscopic pieces of glass bouncing down your intestinal tract. One of my caregivers recently put her UC into remission after several months of a low oxalate diet based on the work of Sally K Norton and her book called toxic Superfoods. Of course full on carnivore diet is a low oxalate diet because no plants are consumed. I have been Carnivore for four years now and I am seeing some significant improvements in my health.

I just started taking 200 mg 3 times a day after I stopped drinking alcohol. It feels kind of weird on your liver but I feel better. Give it a try I don't think it will hurt... I'm also taking dandelion tea to complement my natural detox.. I can feel the difference. I'm losing weight as well.. best of luck and God bless 🙏.

You can ask your doctor to check your liver enzyme levels. Also, it's likely you will have other problems with digestion.

I started taking Milk Thistle some years ago after i read it was the Most Potent of all the antioxidants, so i figured why not. Like all health food supplements the Best Brand is "Natures Plus"not to be confused with "Natures Made"..."PLUS" has a fully FDA certified lab and meets quality control levels. It is also an expensive brand. So I guess it comes down to how much can u afford to pay?

IMO.... BEFORE taking any supplement to fix bad behavior you should first eliminate the bad behavior (alcohol, eating too much, drugs, medications etc). If eliminating your bad behavior does not cure your problem then take a look at supplements and miracle cures backed by semi science that might help you. Wish you much success in healing yourself :)

altho this is not from a study, i had a dog with liver enzymes that exceeded ability to sustain life, and the vet wanted to remove GB. i brought him home and fed him beets and milk thistle extract and he recovered.... when i took him to a different holistic vet, and his liver enzymes went back to normal, she was completely surprised by the "miracle" and also shared with me that altho vets prescribe vit E and SAMe for dogs with liver problems, she had seen more evidence in her practice with mmilk thistle turning things around.

What I find even more puzzling is NAFLD's cause in my case: I have not consumed any alcohol during most of my life, though I did, foolishly, overdo it to the point of nausea a few times as a young man and some wine, infrequently and moderately, later. I have not, to my knowledge had any liver problems at all of any sort. I am now 91 yo. In 2011, my colon was punctured during a colonoscopy. After my recovery from successful colon resection, I had an ultrasount survey of my liver because my enzymes were high. A "coarse echotexture" was reported. Recent hepatic ultrasounds have not reported any potential problem, except for a stable cyst. I do not know why I should have had NAFLD aa shown after my colon resection. I have taken milk-thistle but do not know if it has been of any benefit to me. I have taken it from time to time in 160mg daily doses.

NAFLD is caused by sugar. I've got it and only a chinese doctor picked it up, now western doctor would even look at me because I don't drink yet I have a large gut that sticks out, I have elevated Gamma GT in my blood work and I have gall stones. I also believe prolonged stress being a single mum and a high school teacher have contributed to my fatty liver. I found out at 26 and I have had to research myself on what to do and how to support this. I only recently came across MT and hope this will improve my blood work next time and cutting out all processed foods.

700 mg/day silymarin + general vitamins + choline + B-complex vitamins, 1 month strong OMAD diet - leafy veggies, small amount of fruits and a lot of meat, zero alcohol, sugar and soda. The result is - 10 kg. of body weight (from 85 to 75), -10 cm of waist circumference, completely stopped BP medicines. I am also an ultrasound application specialist and in 1 month my liver got from glowing fatty mass with hard visibility of the distant edge to pure homogeneous parenchyma with similar to a child`s echogenicity. However, after this month I started old diet agan and in 5 months i gained 2 kg., but the bad thing is that my liver is now going fatty again so I do start again with some supplements and better eating habits, although not as restrictive as initially. Naturally, alcohol, sugar, soda and highly processed foods are a no no.
