You are the best watercolor teacher I’ve ever seen. I’ve been many watercolor classes, workshops, non of the teachers explained the fundamentals about watercolor like you do. So glad I can access your classes online and they are free! May God bless you!

Thank you Mr. Miller for your teachings. You are a very kind man, there aren't many people like you. I have painting since I am 13 years of age and today I am 69. I don't consider myself a good painter because I have only taken lessons sporadically. I cannot afford to pay for a fine art school. You Tube have help me a lot in improving my paintings. I do not feel very confident because of not being able to go to a fine school. I am a self taught. I have been trying very hard because painting is my passion. You are such a great person and I appreciate so much your lessons. I am sorry that I cannot pay for painting lessons. I can merely pay for Internet service. But watching you in this channel is helping me a great deal. I have always painted mostly in oils, now I am practicing with acrylics and watercolors. I find watercolor to be more difficult than oils, as well acrylics. I am not giving up. I will continue to paint until I die, really. My favorite artist is Rembrandt, I wish I could learn so well to control my lights like this old master. Thank you again for your kindness.

How is your channel so underappreciated! Unfathomable to me. Love the 1 to 10 scale of water in brush, and several other techniques I've been picking up. It all makes so much sense now. I wish I had found you sooner! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and posting them for us. Much appreciated.

It's difficult to "feel" how wet the brush is, unless one uses their fingers. Just "slightly" too wet or dry, and their can be big problems.

I've already commented on one of your videos but I'll say it again, you're a really amazing teacher. I've learnt so much in these past few days, ever since I started watching your videos. I do have a question, though. I noticed that you never tape your paper down, which is contradictory to the other videos I've seen. Is it necessary to tape down watercolor paper at this stage (beginner) or can I keep practicing these activities without taping my paper down?
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
+Pia C I don't always tape my down, it's up to you. If one tapes around the image, when the painting is done and one removes the tape, the painting looks better. If you want the painting to stay flat while painting, you have some choices. Use thick, 300 pound paper that doesn't bend. Or, tape or staple the paper down to a board before painting, or use a watercolor block.
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
I tell my beginners, no need to tape or stretch the paper. But the more serious one gets, and the larger the painting I think one should at least tape it down. I wet my paper, stretch it, then staple, into a soft board, all of my wc paper down when I do my more serious work.
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
The number one reason one cannot get a flat wash in watercolor is because part of the wash is wetter then other parts of the wash. It's actually quite difficult to make a flat wash on a large area, one has to practice doing this. Sometimes, stretching the paper will help...

Very helpful thank you! Is it possible to "reactivate" dried old paint so it becomes more gooey?
@Stanleylestermiller9 жыл бұрын
Omair Jamal Hi Omair, if you place a little water over your dry paint, it should soften in about 30 minutes. Dry hard paint will never again become gooey. But, it can become "soft" so you can use it.

Thanks for the video ! I have a question, is hard watercolor good to start (watercolor pad ? Don't know the good word in englihs) ? I have a little Van Gogh hard watercolor pad, but don't know if it's a good quality, or enough to start with..
@Stanleylestermiller9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Cohen Hard colors (pan colors) are fine. However, with hard colors it can be more difficult to get rich color and dark colors. One must make sure the hard colors have softened before using them. I much prefer soft, tube colors.

Stan Miller thank you for your answer ! I like your art, hoping to see you in Switzerland maybe for a masterclass one day ?! Cheers ! Anthony.

What can be done with the dried out paint? Do you reserve that for when you want a lighter tone? Or do you add water to it and wait for it to "gooify" again? (This would be relevant for old tubes of paints that have solidified too, I guess.) Thanks!
@Stanleylestermiller5 жыл бұрын
sthom4bad yes, I wet the try paint, let the water soften it up for 30 minutes or more, then it can be used, but not as good as fresh paint, good for lighter ares.

Hi Stan. Thank you very much for your videos. What brand of brushes and water color paper you recommend ? Your youtube student.
@Stanleylestermiller6 жыл бұрын
Any brush will work..as long as it is a watercolor brush and in good condition. A Robert Simmons synthetic brush works just fine...a number 6 or 7? If you want to be perfect, the Winsor Newton red sable, number 6, $100. Very little difference between the $5 and $100 brush. I use Arches wc paper. Many good papers out there.

What do you do with the dried paint in cups?
@Stanleylestermiller5 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean the dry paint left in my palette? I don't use cups. I re-wet the dry paint when I start painting, a couple of drops of water on the dry paint will soften it up...in about 10 minutes. I also add fresh paint from tubes.

Thank you Stan. You taught like no one else did. I got a light bulb moment each time I watched your video! One thing confused me is that your title is watercolor and egg tempera paintings. I’ve never seen you used egg tempera. Am I missing anything?

hi Mr Miller! First thank you very much. My question is if we can do both hard and soft edges on dry paper. Do you use watered paper? sorry for my poor english.
@Stanleylestermiller Жыл бұрын
Lesson 11 shows us how to soften an edge on dry paper. If we put paint on wet paper, the paint will not have an edge..but will be a soft edge. So yes, one can create a soft edge on dry or on wet paper.
@Stanleylestermiller Жыл бұрын
