I'm an aspiring professional artist but have never been able to afford proper schooling. Been watching tons of tutorials and yours are THE most simple yet informative I've come across. You really break it down to the essentials in a way that feels very intuitive. Thanks man!

Thank you a thousand times, Stan! Wow, your lessons are blowing me away. You're an amazing teacher and I so admire your work. You simplify the complex and make watercolor a much more approachable medium. I've watched the first 14 lessons, and once I'm finished with them I'm going to come back and focus on the aspects for which I need more practice. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us! ~Laura

Every now and then I rewatch this lessons to re-assert what is basically important to remember when painting and set myself free. Your style of constant repetition of your point is so valuable. With other teachers they might mention a point once and you might miss it because there is so much to take in. Your short lessons, point rammed home, is really really helpful.

oh oh oh I learned so much in this one.. well just like all the others but I'm going to hit the hay now on this note ... I'm going to try all this out tomorrow morning. I'm actually excited! What a great thing.. value more important than color! This is so key ...I've been doing pen and ink and pencil drawings for EVER ... but you just helped me even in that.. a small piece that is huge that I was missing. I'm looking at everything around me differently now. You just gave me the gift of "new eyes" as I tell my own students. I love learning a new art and this I have been saving for last for many reasons.. but i'm so hooked. now .. my great grandfather I'm sure is grinning broadly at all this. Thank you so much! What a blessing you have to leave a great footprint in life.. you certainly left one for me. That is all I want in life is to leave a great footprint to someone. Create an awesome day for yourself.

Don't know why it took so long for my synapses to fire, but NOT understanding the difference between value and colour handicapped me badly. I have recently discovered this channel from a mention on another channel: Liron Yanconski. I am now starting to go back to basics and really look at the values more closely. I love painting landscapes, but I tend to try and represent what I see or do something completely abstract and from imagination. This here seems to combine the two in some way, but by adhering to the balance of values it seems that the whole thing works wonderfully. Whether we want to be more representational or less, without the right values and contrasts it can get a bit confusing and lack clear focal point for the viewer (which happens to me quite a bit)

Hi Stan, love these videos - very helpful. What sort of masking tape do you use? I've had my tape tear the paper when I'm finished too many times!
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
+Doug Halls I use hardware store masking tape. Cheaper wc paper will often be ripped by masking tape. I use Arches, masking tape doesn't damage arches...at least my tape doesn't. So, if you use Arches, your problem should go away, or you can buy "low adhesion" tape in art supply stores or some hardware stores?

@nikkihuang76356 жыл бұрын
Thank you, those are really useful tips! I am a bit confused though when you say choose any color your want, because I remember in one of your previous videos using only blue red and yellow (the portrait one) you used that order of colors to represent descending values from dark to light. So if I want something to be really dark I have to use a blue (or blue + red) right? For instance, I wouldn't really be able to paint the dark patch of trees in the middle of this picture using red, would I, if there was blue elsewhere on my picture?
@Stanleylestermiller6 жыл бұрын
Each lesson has different rules. In lesson 16, the portrait, the lesson is: get the drawing and value right, use any color you want, and the painting will turn out. In a three color painting, to get a dark value one must use a dark blue...red or yellow can't get dark enough. Hopefully this helps?

Glad you like the lesson...exactly, "What colors did you use?" is the first question everyone asks when one does a good portrait...so unimportant.
@alext90677 жыл бұрын
Would it be possible to get the sunburst, and how would you do it?
@Stanleylestermiller7 жыл бұрын
It certainly would be possible to get the sunburst Alex. First, it has to be accurately placed and the drawing and the value of this very subtle area needs to be done just right. One could lift the paint off, or one could paint around the rays...very difficult. But, once one knows how to paint this landscape, without the rays, one should be able to paint the landscape with the rays...there are hundreds of ways it could be done....this is the kind of thing I tell my students, "you need to experiment and figure out how to do this without my help"...simply get the drawing and value right and it will work. Good luck!

You (and other stellar teachers) place such an emphasis on values that I wonder if you recommend staying away from subjects that have a relatively small range in the values and stick with one-source high-contrast lighting? Problem is, a lot of people asking for commissioned work want us to work from quite flat subjects/scenes (in value terms)..
@Stanleylestermiller5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, high contrast subjects are much easier to paint. Low contrast, soft edged subjects much harder to paint. This is a big issue with my students, teaching them to choose paintable subjects!

Just wondering, Renoir said that color defines shape. What's your opinion? Thanks for the art.
@Stanleylestermiller8 жыл бұрын
+gloobnord All color has value. Value is the primary factor in creating shape. Color contribute to shape but is not the primary element. As example, black and white photography can create powerful shape without color.

Stan, do you consider colour temperature ?
@Stanleylestermiller7 жыл бұрын
Not very much...only in terms of...I think it should be a little warmer...or a little more cool.
@thepochade59927 жыл бұрын
Aah, so you do consider temperature. Is your consideration related to depth and perspective ?
@Stanleylestermiller7 жыл бұрын
Considering color temperature is very intuitive, relating to anything and everything in the painting. Terribly unimportant for the most part. Nearly everything else, drawing, values, lighting, mood, eye movement, balance, design, universal qualities of the subject, authority of execution...etc...are much, much more important then color temperature. I do not teach, or believe that there are any set rules for color temperature April, if anything, I caution my students if they desire to find rules to follow for color temperature. Get everything else right and your color temperature will probably be terrific.

so should i get my drawing right and my values right?
@Stanleylestermiller2 жыл бұрын
As my lessons explain Aaron, I encourage one to learn how to paint something exactly the way it looks first. To do this, one needs a very accurate drawing, and accurate values. Once one knows how to paint something the way it looks, then one tries to interpret or change the subject anyway you desire.

Okay great lesson but HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HAVE TO SAY VALUE. I think ppl understand the importance after the first 20 times you said it. I eventually had to put it on mute. It also makes me extremely anxious that you don't put the pictures down. They're not still the entire time and I can't focus on anything specific.
