Michael and Daniel stop by to share some choice bits from their time in OSU's japanese classes and the horrible weeaboos they had to study alongside.
Episode notes: Impromptu ASMR on my end, Chinese luigi & the literal goomba, the most polite Yakuza, you can be gay or own a prius not both, first year neonazis, the Jet program, I will murder Michael for clicking his damn mouse so much.

I used to take Japanese classes in 8th grade because I was really interested in the culture, it's so different than America, and it's just a pretty language. I walked in, and about 7 crusty weebs looked at me. One glanced at me, her cat ears twitching. It was, and is, still terrifying.

I double majored international business and japanese. Ended up having a mental breakdown half way through the first semester after not leaving my dorm room for a month due to severe anxiety (I should have definitely been getting treated all through highschool but my parent's didn't think I needed it). I was one of the two people in the class that actually tried and didn't weeb all over our professor. He was a cool dude and I feel super bad for inconveniencing him, he almost single-handedly built the Japanese programs at every college in my state. He even asked around about me when I started missing classes and was working with me to still pass with the required grade after I missed my midterm. It really sucks that I completely melted down a month later and had to leave. If I could meet him again I'd probably apologize too much to him about me leaving his program. Still do some self study but I don't learn very well without classes and someone quizzing me.

Similar thing happened when I was in high school. There was an adult night school Japanese class I attended with the intention of learning and having a chance to practice speaking with people who actually wanted to learn the language to travel or work and not "I WANT TO WATCH ANIME WITHOUT SUBS". It was multiple times a week, every week, and cost a significant amount of money. While most people in the class were well intended, there was one trademark weeb that must have begged his mom to pay for him to take the class. First class he was so excited, but after he realized that it would require work and we wouldn't learn by watching Naruto and analyzing tentacle porn, he lost ALL interest and wouldn't bother doing the homework or paying attention in class. The teacher, who was Japanese and therefore too polite to tell him to GTFO, would actually put up with him holding up the class for 5 minutes (actual) to figure out where we were, then to give a wrong answer. One class, he brought in a rubber glove he would inflate and deflate and play with. The entire fucking class. Obviously, he was too embarrassed to admit to mommy that she wasted her time and money on him because turns out, he'd rather watch Hetalia with subs. More than anything, I feel bad for the other adults who were taking the class. This one kid wasted their fucking time and money. No doubt I'm a weeb (I like traveling to the land of the rising Nip and studying its history/demographics/politics/etc), but holy fuck I'm not obnoxious about it and won't waste people's time over it.

Yeah actual nazis and fascists are quite good at the entire conflict thing, but neo-nazis? I would actually put my money on the far left in this scenario because actual neo-nazis (not people taking up the title for trolling purposes) are possibly the only people who are more retarded than them, at least in my experience with them.

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT FRENCH CLASS I'm a Spanish major (I love learning languages and about other cultures) and I'm in my senior year. Since I needed to fill more credits I decided to take intro to French because someday I want to get my PhD in romance languages (it's a thing). I go into class and it seems everyone is there because they think French is a cool language or they have French/Canadian/Swiss/etc heritage and want to connect with it more or they just want to learn a foreign language. Seems good, right? THIS ONE GUY He acts like he's French (he's not), he acts like he knows everything about French (he doesn't, I'm ahead of him actually), and he refuses to admit when he's wrong (he even throws a fit every time the prof corrects him). He acts like he's the only one who knows history or anything about learning a foreign language (even though another guy in my class already speaks 3 languages and I'm already fluent in Spanish AND I'm a history minor). He acts like he knows everything about French culture and even goes as far as trying to correct our prof on cultural stuff about France. And guess what, our prof IS FROM FRANCE. It was annoying as hell and he reminds so God damn much of the weebs in these stories

Although I haven't really experienced something as severe as a random weeb talking to me like i'm their lifelong friend on the bus, I think I might have experienced a weird attempt at it by one of them. I have a Death Note key chain and a few pins of different characters on my bag and one day while riding the bus this guy in front of me was listening to music on his phone (it was anime openings with the lyrics/random pictures of the show on the background sort of video). He noticed my bag and started to deliberately show me his phone's screen in a obvious/non-obvious matter, you know like, holding it to his ear while the screen was facing me (even though he had headphones on) which he was not doing until after he noticed my bag. I was tired so I pretended I was falling asleep but i would sometimes open my eyes like as if I was fighting the "sleepiness" and the guy would put the phone to his other ear, which was closer to me, with the screen facing me (same video on replay mind you) and, he would oddly try to do some eye contact but would just drop his stare to the pins and key chain once I returned the eye contact. It's like he wanted to say something or more likely he wanted me to start a conversation by commenting on the video he was constantly playing on the phone and oddly holding at my direction. It went on for the remaining 15 minutes of the bus ride...

Man, stuff like this really gives a perspective of sorts. I was looking into TESL/TEFL/TESOL(aka teaching English, I have an interest in it) and I was looking at Japan as a possible location. Some research I had to do(long story) involved looking at the best areas to do it. I figured learning the language of the country I'd decide on trying to go to would be a good idea, but there was this subtle thought in my head about the stigmas and what-not. Although, that being said, I'm probably never going to be able to go to university for linguistics or anything else that will involve me going to a foreign country for any sensible reason, so it's kind of just not an option. Still, this was interesting to listen to.

There is a thing about speaking Japanese for weaboos. They are there to learn to read and stuff. After that getting pronunciation wrong and stuff is not that important. At least thats me with English. I can read really good, write okay-ish, and speak kinda badly. Since all I do is read English. That said I did not learn any English past Junior high school, since I don't really plan to go to England or wherever.

You know, as per my dads suggestion, I had wanted to try to save up money and take a tourist trip to Japan. Its been a childhood dream of mine as I was so into asian cultures, Japan included. Course, these days I've come to realize that, much like our own country, these places see foreigners just as well as we do(Which is not at all). And now, seeing this and the rise of nationalism on the global stage and the experience of many others who have taken a trip to these places themselves, I realize that, you know, maybe its best to let that dream die as well.

I went to a Anime-con and omg....I hated it because there it was just too much. For example, fullmetal alchemist the voice actor of edward was premiering a live action video of the shot that u can't find online and when the movie was playing everyone was cheering over the video to the point you couldn't even hear what's going on. I tried so hard because it was something to do in Minnesota. On my fourth year or something of Anime Detour, I just ditched and went home on Saturday evening when activity was peaking. It was that bad. The most sane demographic at those cons are the hardcore Resident Evil fans who wear full SWAT hazmat Umbrella gear with the expensive airsoft guns. I feel like the most sane fandoms of Japanese franchises are followers of the stuff that just doesn't seem very Japanese at all, like RE, Gunslinger Girl and Hellsing.

What's with this perception that anime is mainstream? Sure the online groups are noticeably large but that's because they'd be inherently drawn to mostly digital interaction. At my school you have the anime group but aside from that it's far and few between

Honestly, the sort of differentiation between levels of respect in japanese, like the difference in words with giving things depending on power, in a way it makes more sense than english, at least if we had words like that I could feel better about receiving them.

Nobody will answer this, but I gotta wonder. What if one did take a Japanese class just for weeb shit, but they nonetheless actually took it completely seriously and weren't a complete goddamn tool about it. Would that cross the line twice and return to acceptable, or not quite?

> Text translation is dying They've been saying that for 50 years already, and it'll take it 50 more to start dying for real. You are completely right about the process turning out to be much harder than an average person thinks and the fact that you'll never make a living unless you do technical translation, though.
