A tip: save all the bits you sawed off of the bumper/hood/fascia/etc so that if Future Matt is broke and wants to sell the Viper, the next guy (it'll probably be a guy) can rebuild the bumper and fascia to make them worth thousand$ again. That's one nice thing about composites.

Hey Matt! A t-shirt is certainly better than nothing, but I strongly recommend something like a dust mask or in more super dusty conditions, a respirator. Silicosis is no joke, and there is no cure. My grandfather died of complications from a lack of PPE when working with glass dust and paint solvents, so if I said nothing I think he'd probably haunt me or something.

A cotton T-shirt has a filtration rating of 28-73% depending on what corner of the internet you visit, so it's probably fine for cutting fiberglass. Probably.

The argon idea was good. When eventually your box frame decides to rust away, and you need to weld whatever was found in the scrapyard to keep the car going, there is argon ready to be used inside the car's shocks.

Matt, you should probably get an actual respirator and ear defenders. 3M makes great ones and they're quite cheap and comfortable. This sounds like mom talking, but I honestly wear mine because it's genuinely more pleasant to work in silence and not have black snot coming from my nose. Anyway that hack with the nitrogen was actually very smart, thanks!

I make cutouts for the wheels very conservatively, experience has shown that at speed wheels do this job very well on their own.

Used to work as a mechanic in a shop that specialized in Vipers. At the time the 1st/2nd gen hoods were roughly 15~ grand. Had more than 1 very confused and upset customer when wed tell them the price.

I cannot fathom how your hearing survived multitool'ing that hood. It's just a giant resonator. My ear drums bleed for ye.

Next time you need to 3d scan stuff, get some AESUB Blue. It sublimates and leaves no residue, coming from a professional 3d scanner person it's a godsend

Argon was one of the speed secrets when it came to filling tires in NASCAR's top series. It would be stable within 2 psi on long runs. In a shock with much lower volume of gas, the pressure change would be almost undetectable. Argon is FAR better than nitrogen when it comes to pressure stability with temp change.

Hey Matt, as another guy with ADD, all I can say is don’t beat yourself up too much about your unfinished projects. You can drive yourself into a deep dark place in your mind. You’re doing great. One step at a time. Maybe try to avoid starting any new projects in the mean time before you overwhelm yourself into oblivion. You’re one of my favourite KZfaqrs and I watch way way too much KZfaq… you know to avoid my half finished projects.

I can’t understand how you feel about having so many projects, from the videos it seems you manage somehow. I beat myself every time I could have furthered a project and didn’t, making myself hate them and myself in the process. They mostly feel like a chore, a sad thought or a failure nowadays. I recently got the Perry Parts bumps on my 3rd gen 4runner. Really liking them so far. Cool to see that they long term cycle test them too. That guy isn't just a data nerd but also a material science nerd.

Nitrogen and Argon are both very well behaved gases, meaning not much deviation from ideal gas law. So is oxygen actually so dry air should also be fine from a pressure standpoint but I don't know about oxidation of the oil, or other parts. 10 years as R&D engineer in semiconductor field metering gas flows.

6:29 I have a funny story, that I reckon you'd like (involving bump stops). Back in the 90's, when I was a Tank driver, I did an awesome jump in my Leopard AS1A4 MBT. I landed just a bit harder than normal.....maybe a lot harder, actually. I fused all four rear bump stops into their compressed position, so hard that we needed to oxy all of them off as they'd welded themselves in place. Destroyed six support arms, and one front idler, as well. I'll gloss over the bit where I was almost ejected, and decapitated, simultaneously. Fun times. Love the build!

Perry Parts slaps. Seen a lot of real world testing from different people who run them and the results are more than I'd have expected from any solid bump stop.

I started taking videos some 15-20 years ago with the idea of making some kind of project blog for *one* of my projects, but didn't manage the next step of actually editing or uploading them anywhere, so you're considerably better at finishing things than you might think!

Relating to the bumper, i did a similar thing with my 2002 4runner sport edition. I took it offroading and immediately smashed it on some rocks. The specific sport edition "skid plate" is like $400 and now it hangs on my wall all mangled up reminding me that fun is better than money

I have to ask, Why would you not buy some aftermarket fiber glass stuff, and sell the original stuff? Seems to be like you get a lot of money for the original parts more than the fiber glass.

When you design your rocksliders, you should have them mimic the shape of the ground effects on the sides of the car. It just looks weird without those.

11:04 - Dealing with my boat trailer ground issues - I have better luck using the ground pin on a standard 4 pin connector and running individual grounds to each light (essentially using the car as a ground, not the trailer). Keeps the salt exposure to a minimum too.

Argon does work in shocks. That's always what I use in my dirt bike shocks because I don't want to keep a bottle on hand just for that, but since I weld I always have argon.

9:37 Nitrogen is also used in dampers (the correct name) because it doesn't get all explody in the presence of oil like high pressure oxygen mixes do.

Engineer here. 10/10 did charge my FOX and WP shocks with Argon using a high pressure regulator. It's dry, and it won't react with the oil. It will maintain pressure and prevent cavitation. End of story.

Oh man now i've gone down the rabbit hole of forums arguing about Argon vs Nitrogen in struts. Thanks, Matt. I sure needed that.

Know what you fit your style. Just build a huge grind disk, with the size of the planned wheel, spin it up and let it grind away everything it can reach! Naturally creates a perfectly matched clearance!

Air is 78% nitrogen, so it should be no surprise that it changes pressure with temperature about as much as pure nitrogen. Water is the problem, and that's true whether it's water in air or water in nitrogen. The advantage of bottled dry nitrogen is that it is dry, not that it is nitrogen. And the Ideal Gas Law applies identically to all gases... because it's just for the ideal case.

FYI, you can purchase off the shelf axle stubs with suspension and different degrees of drop. Search for Reliable torsion stub axles. They are rated for 2000lb per pair, which is probably sufficient for your race car. They look like your fabricobbled axle stubs, but have suspension.

hey matt, the thing you are referring to for the differences of nonideal gas behavior are called vander wall's constants. they basically get plugged into vanderwalls equation which is basically a variation of the ideal gas equation to describe non-ideal gas behavior. I have done a little reasearch on this as I, like you had argon lying around for welding but no nitrogen and had some shocks lying around. And as it turns out Argon has similar Vander walls constants to nitrogen, so there really shouldn't be any appreciable difference between them. As I am sure you know argon is less reactive than nitrogen, but the main reason why IFP or bladder shocks are filled with nitrogen, is because of the lack of water content that air has which is the main contributer to non-consistent behavior of air chambers in suspension, that and its cheap.

Fun fact: I did more trimming to fit 35s on my 4Runner than you did to fit them on a Viper.
