@Daniel Hostetler wow, you can have post offices and postal delivery without an organization to maintain and control them? That is what the "Postal" service does along with determining postal rates and regulations. It is in the constitution for a reason.
@carolynmiles92813 жыл бұрын
Fun fact. The postal service is the only government body or private body mandated to pay ahead of time for 75 years retirement and medical coverage for every employee. They were actually profitable before this was mandated. If I remember correctly, the past plans to privatize the postal service included provisions to remove this requirement if a private company assumed operations because no company would assume that kind of liability.
@carolynmiles92813 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Hostetler are police services mentioned? Is there anything specifically mentioned about police providing service at your door on demand? Fire? Animal control?. The reason to your door services were not mentioned along with a postal service in the constitution is that that was not a thing at that time. Ever hear of general delivery? Mail was transported to a central place in villages and towns where residents would come to pick up their mail at their convenience. You have seen a remnant of this in movies and TV shows when characters would stop by the general store or post office to pick up their mail. As the populations grew, it was no longer a viable way to conduct operations as the amount of time required to locate and hand out thousands of letters and packages a day became too much. Home or central building delivery was established. This evolved into the modern services you see today.

I don't know of any other business that goes to congress with their hand out as often as the postal service does, with the exception of every company that constantly give campaign contributions to congresspeople. I think the main reason why postal service keeps going to congress asking for money is because it's not a business, it's a government service. One that is so essential it's explicitly authorized in the Constitution -- article 1, section 8. It's congress' job to fund the postal service. The postal service is a public good and it needs current funding. People need to get this in their heads. Do they also not know that the USPS is in the constitution and it's the job of Congress to fund it?
@phthisis3 жыл бұрын
Let's also not forget that Congress passed a law in 2006: "The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA) changed the way the Postal Service sets rates. It divided postal services into two broad categories: market dominant (mailing services) and competitive (shipping services). Market dominant products constitute about 90 percent of postal revenue. When the PAEA was passed in December 2006, the Postal Service was still experiencing annual increases in mail volume. However, the recent, rapid drop in mail volume and revenue has forced the Postal Service into a financial crisis. The Postal Service’s Integrated Financial Plan for fiscal year 2010 forecasts a net loss of $7.8 billion. Since the Postal Service has substantial fixed costs, as mail volume falls, the Postal Service may have limited ability under the price cap to generate sufficient revenue to fund its network. Inflation was flat in 2009, so there was no room to raise prices under the cap this year." - United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General

I used to haul mail for the USPS. I used to have a lot of chicks and ducklings and fruits that people would send in the mail because it was fast. Now, chicks and ducklings are dying on the docks of the PO everywhere. The idea that this is saving money is a lie. The customers are going to want to be paid for their lost shipments. Heirloom chicks are $5 a piece. Thousands of them are dead. Someone needs to be held accountable.

@mike h Perhaps you should rephrase that. In the phrase, "there are services that businesses provide," the subject (that is the thing doing the action) is businesses. Providing a service is not the same as being a service. A business might provide a service but its primary goal is to make a profit. McDonalds provides services to millions of people every day but it is not a service. The news was supposed to be a service until someone noticed a loophole and now it's a business.
@thehellyousay3 жыл бұрын
How? Public education, which is also a service, has been gutted so that private education, a business (catering, to be precise), can defraud the taxpayers of education funding. Only criminals think everyone and everything can be bought, sold, and profited from. Your nation has literally been a criminal nation from the get go. Profit is, quite frankly, the only American ideal of any substance (shit is substantive, after all). All the rest are just words to chirp so americans can feel better about themselves than they realistically ought to.

Privatization is the enemy, and it was embraced lavishly on both sides of the aisle. The only thing stopping the privatization of public education is teachers. At least the USPS is federal and has a national union. Teachers do not have this, as we are in many states with Jim Crow laws. Requiring the USPS to keep billions available in retirement money is a GOP gambit that will set the USPS for failure if this privatization strategy is not changed. Flint deserved more from us than lip service. They deserved to be heard, like Bernie heard them. A failing infrastructure leads to a poisoning of every essential element of society. Mrs. Clinton got her endorsement, then evaporated. Mr. Obama did nothing because Progressives backed a plan for assistance and he chose to redbait instead of lead. Trump did nothing. Let's hope Biden gets it right. They don't need lip service.

Beau, so much more to this rabbit hole. Our politicians bankrupted the USPS back on December 20, 2006 with The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA). “Well, howdy there, Internet people. It’s Beau again. So today, we’re going to talk about the Postal Service, and why it just can’t remain solvent. Why it always needs money. Why it’s always going to Congress with it’s hand out. I don’t know of any other business that goes to Congress with their hand out as often as the Postal Service does, with the exception of those companies that constantly give campaign contributions to Congress people. I think the main reason that this business - why Postal Service keeps going to Congress, asking for money, is because it’s not a BUSINESS. It’s a government SERVICE. One that is so essential, it’s explicitly authorized in the Constitution, Article One, Section 8. It’s Congress’ job to FUND the Postal Service. The Postal Service isn’t asking for a bailout, it’s asking for funding. It’s asking Congress to do its job. Now, one of the biggest roadblocks to this is, One: The idea that the Postal Service is a business. Two: The hundred thousand dollars or so, according to Open Secrets, that Mitch McConnell got from people affiliated with UPS and FEDEX. That might have something to do with it as well. Generally speaking, government services are not expected to turn a profit. You know what doesn’t turn a profit? The VA. Veterans Affairs doesn’t turn a profit. They’re not explicitly authorized in the Constitution either. Let’s get rid of them. No? Don’t want to do that. That would be politically untenable. You want to sacrifice services, mainly for rural people, I’m gonna suggest to the Republican party that that’s probably a bad idea. You ever look at one of the maps, where your votes come from? They’re generally rural people. Aside from that, I would suggest that, while fiscal responsibility is important, it’s incredibly important, putting too much emphasis on cost-saving, when it comes to government services, can lead to some bad things. I would go ahead and bring up, in completely unrelated news, it looks like the settlement for those in Flint is going to be around $600 million dollars, and to be honest, I don’t think that’s enough. Not for the long-term damage that’s gonna be caused. I can’t remember exactly why that happened, either. I think it had something to do with government prioritizing money while they were supposed to be prioritizing an essential service. Aside from that, right now, given everything that’s going on, the Post Office is incredibly important to maintain the vote. And that’s really what this is about. And that’s not really some kind of bizarre talking point, not when the president himself has said that that’s kind of the reason. You know, when he said, “if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have Universal Mail In Voting, because they’re not equipped to have it. “ So, while facing an issue that might impact the vote, his response is to, well, go after the Postal Service, and make it even harder to process the votes. Because he wants to suppress the vote. Because he doesn’t care about the Constitution. He doesn’t care about democracy. He doesn’t care about the Republic. And he never has. The Postal Service is not a business. It’s a government service. If we’re going to have a government, and it can’t fund essential services, then it’s not any good. Maybe we should just replace everybody up there. Would make sense to me. Anyway, it’s just a thought. Y’all have a good day.”
