I always thought of the fact that so many societies are actually pretty accepting of tomboys but when it comes to them boys it's just pretty weird how people act around it and I always wondered why were they not as accepted as tomboys it turns out femininity is degrading to society
@bealol1016
@bealol1016 3 жыл бұрын
@@noormasri571 exactly!! It’s so strange that women are seen as people that need to be incredibly individualistic (being a tomboy was popularized by the idea of being “different from the others” years back) but men have to meet this very similar to the others standard (like every other conventionally masculine man shown on TV and magazines.) So weird. Just an observation.

I've been called a white boy and gay since I was a kid because my clothes fit. Most black girls wouldn't date me and whenever I dated outside my race that's when the "white boy" chant got louder. Still happens somewhat to this day and I'm assuming it's because I don't look the part. I'm a man who doesn't see a problem wearing a women's shirt. It's been decades but I'm glad people especially black women can see that if we both go shopping and get a massage it's not gay, it's self healing.

What I find is that we raise girls in their “uniqueness” there tends to be a celebration of the different aspects of the female experience and how there is no one way. We see that with girl groups like The Spice Girls. With black boys, we give them THE SAME outline, and we discourage anything other than the box of masculinity presented. To be afraid that you’ll be alone because you aspire for a level of personal growth and freedom we do our boys a disservice: THERE IS NO ONE WAY TO BE A MAN.

girls' "uniqueness" is also mostly celebrated when it can be attractive to men. Oh, you can be goth, there are men who like goths. You can be laid back, there are men that like the more relaxed style. But if you are a black goth or fat and laid back, or if you're simply ugly, then put yourself away. That box of masculinity is also what most men think women want. I remember a story I heard from AA where the guy started drinking because the woman he loved said "if you don't drink, you're no man", and then he became addicted. The whole thing is very heteronormative and damaging to everybody involved.

@@LunaWitcher This is true also. We all have our advantages and disadvantages. Open discourse like this should eventually set us free. I think the difference here is that while women have the option to really work for each other, feminism, more homeless shelters, r/FemaleDatingStrategy, etc: men have MGOW, Incel, and scam artists. Of course, a lot of what we have is exclusive to trans women. But I do think we have created more options to get help than men have. Men of course also have the option to create resources, but do to the nature of toxic masculinity masculinity and the patriarchy they dont always see it as an option. I dunno, the world could be a much better place for all involved. And i'm inclined to blame much of what we have on capitalism. I digress though. Just woke up and had a few thoughts.

Not just crop tops, but also short shorts, high rise jeans, bell bottoms, etc. The problem was when the 90s hit, grunge and gangster rap became mainstream which presented a more stereotypical masculine image. Plus with the growing recognition of homosexuality, mainstream fashion for men became more relaxed, baggy, less fitted, longer so most men started adopting these looks and the only men still wearing stuff that was short and/or tight were seen in a certain way. It didn’t help that also in the early 90s, there was also the growing concern of AIDS.

Thank you for creating this educational video. I went through a lot of discrimination during my middle and high school years for being "different." I never dressed feminine, but these boys (majority were Black) and a few girls would gossip about me 24/7. There were times I asked God "Why you made me different than the other boys?" Julian three years ago has finally retired. Now, I love myself and can give two fucks about what people think of my "eccentric" persona.

This is so true. Society kinda forces men in general to the hiper masculine behavior, but black men suffer even more. Most men keep being toxic, sexist, homophobic, not because they really are, because I have friends that keep acting and saying homophobic jokes, but just to reinforce that "I am masculine, ok? Have you guys saw me making this homophobic and sexist jokes?". I hate that so much. I tried deconstruct my family minds, especially my str8 brother, and I see that even him, that is str8, now suffer homophobia for not having that toxic masculinity. He don't likes homophobic jokes, he is always complaining with his friends about it, also with sexist comments. That's sucks. I realized that most of men are toxic just to be accepted, not all of them really are like that. ¬¬

I hate it because it lessens my dating pool and will make it harder for me to find the type of guy I'm attracted to when people put pressure on men to be in a little box. I'm attracted to men who don't attach gender to pieces of clothing, don't have egos so fragile that they have to be in charge all the time, and who aren't hypersexual & ultra-aggressive and don't try to put on a front that they are those things to impress other men.

Once when I was in 3rd grade, this very adorable kid with glasses from my grade but from another class came to me in P.E. because I was that really energetic kid that thought that she was a gymnast just because she taught herself to cartwheel and split. The kid saw me and after talking for a bit he fucking did a cartwheel and landed on a split, I was shooketh out of my mind at the time, I was low-key concerned because I thought that would get him hurt but I got so shook that I actually started crushing on him, he was sadly ridiculed since people thought that doing that was gay. He was so confident and seeing a guy do flawlessly (to my 8 y/o eyes) a thing that I loved to do just really amazed me, that's sadly the only memory I had from him since we weren't in the same class and I ended up moving to DR after half the school year, I don't even remember his name but I hope he is happy and doing his/her/or their best and hope he knew I had a massive crush on him

i really thought this was going to be another video talking about the gay agenda and feminization/emasculation of black men. I'm not attacking anyone but i always hear people blaming black men for the whole toxic masculinity thing when in fact a lot of black women help reinforce it. I've heard some black women say they can't date a man without a beard or a light skin guy or his pants are too tight or why is he keeping his hair that long(not in dreadlocks) or blah blah blah and its all just "preference" but its the same type of "preference" that some black men have for light skin women. Also this is just my opinion though but black women of all the races have the least tolerance for pretty boys and it comes from hyper masculinisation of black women by black men in fact men of all races. A lot pick a traditional man the gruffer the better in an attempt to make themselves feel more feminine and slight in comparison. Women of all races do this too but its sooo prevalent in black women. It's a terrible cycle and i hope it ends soon cause its not good for both sides of the communtiy at all

I never understood why people cared so much about other people's fashion. Fashion is one of the best ways a child can explore identity and self expression. Putting them in a box to be a certain way because of societal norms only influences self hatred which could then be projected in the worst ways possible as they get older. Whether a man is happy wearing clothes that are considered "masculine" or happy wearing clothes that are considered "feminine" or even a mix of the 2 shouldn't be anyone's business to scrutinize. People being happy and successful simultaneously seems like such an out of reach thing the way society reacts to it🤦🏿‍♀️.

Gender is a colonial, white construct and so the model for it is white people. You put so much love and dedication towards your videos! I'm binge watching and really enjoying them so far. My only problem is the use of the term f*mboy... It was really popularized as a porn term referring to trans women (as they are seen as feminine men) and it has been recently rebranded as gender non conforming men. @@mo.ka.9661 chile You just proved the fact that gender is a social construct, because the definition of gender and gender identity changes in each culture, meaning it is not fixed or biological, when researching the gender constructs in non white cultures, please look at the culture pre and post colonialism, because it does make a difference, a big one actually, for example in, I'm not sure where in South East Asia, but I'm pretty sure it's the Philippines, where many tribes were matriarchal, in contrast to Europe's strictly patriarchal society, and this was considered their gender roles, in the Philipines, the women led, while in Europe men led, but post colonialism and Europe (Spain) being the assholes they were basically replaced their gender construct with their own, so this further proves the point that gender is a construct and the most common gender construct used globally is one that was created, crafted, utilized, and forced down the throats of many who didn't ask, was from Europe

I rly loved this video! as a black woman and someone who appreciates and respects people for what they decide or don't decide to do with themselves, i never understood why so many people (and when i say ppl i rly mean the black community; specifically the men) have the need to tell others how to live their lives. why they are so comfortable with the blatant homophobia and transphobia they always throw out. so what if a man wants to dress more feminine and wear make up and nail polish, they're not hurting anyone by being themselves. the toxic masculinity in our community is so sad bc it forces those who choose to feel free in expressing themselves more self conscious and unfortunately can become suicidal. i do believe that gender as well as sexuality are meant to be fluid and those who choose to explore that spectrum shouldn't be punished or mocked for doing so just bc it's not considered the "norm".

I love this Sistah’s take on this. While I don’t consider myself a “Femboy”, as I’ve never heard of that title until this video, I am a straight man who’s form of self expression is nail polish. Initially, some women just wouldn’t date me for whatever reasons they were hung up on. Even had one woman say to me that my nails and toes shouldn’t be better than hers and I wasn’t competing with her. However, my wife loves it and that’s what matters. I have no issues with how anyone expresses their creativity with themselves as everyone should live their life how they wish as long as it’s not hurting the next person. Great video!

The fact that people even think twice about men in dresses, skirts, heels is so strange. Like why do you care so much?? Men in robes and silks and heels used to be a symbol of power and wealth. If it makes someone happy to dress a certain way, shouldn’t we just accept and embrace them?

“ Femboy” ... hmmm something that gay men were hated on and have been physically/verbally attacked for doing for decades... now I guess a straight man can be praised for his aesthetic or challenging the norm 🤦🏽‍♂️ that’s just my opinion tho

KStar And I love that from her 💕 and to the men of any sexual orientation that go out of their way to express their fem beauty I deeply applaud you 👏🏽 but when it is being only recognized from a certain social group without recognizing the group that has challenged it before them it’s a slap across the face you know? (this is only my opinion tho)

not only its a of problem men holding these expectations towards other men, but women as well. Seen so many girls on social media who say they would never date a man who didn't act or present as hypermasculine, not only in appearence but also their sexuality (like, bi/pan men or those who have explored their sexuality). in conclusion, gender norms are trash and should be burned and forgotten.

I'm a proponent of live and let live, in all forms. While I am for uplifting my effeminate and gender bending brothers, let's not go down this rabbit hole that us masculine staight dudes are all the way we are because it was beaten into all of us or because of "societal pressure" all the time. I grew up in San Francisco, a city that was known for being very open minded about you doing you, whatever that may be. That is up to, and including a guy like me enjoying being my truth. I like jeans, jerseys, cars and football, and am not feeling wearing a dress or makeup. But I reiterate, bear no ill will toward a man that does. Yes, there are men who force themselves to be the Alpha male when that is not in them, but it seems like that blanket is getting thrown on all masculine straight dudes. Huge Prince fan, by the way. Love that you included him in this conversation.

It's really tough for black communities to talk about male feminity especially with the media and old traditions of showing how strong a man is supposed to be. They can't cry and show so much emotion or they are deemed "weak". It needs to stop and many of us still struggle with the unconscious bias of how a "man" in this case a "black man" is supposed to present themselves in society.
@qsister1
@qsister1 3 жыл бұрын
@Manuel Patterson well I don't have to depend on a man to defend me I can do that myself or call authorities if need be. I think a man should discover for himself how to present himself. I am in no position to dictate what a man should or shouldn't do to his own body because it's his business and nobody else.

@Manuel Patterson If anyone significant other is in danger when they are around I'd they would come to their defense. In my original post, I was talking about black male emotions and how they have to portray themselves. yes, id hopes they won't act like robots since I didn't say that...anyways. Expressing oneself has nothing to do with a lack of parenting or not having a proper role model in the household. Unconscious bias is real and still permeates today just like society wants men to be a certain way it asks for women to be a certain way.

ABSOLUTELY!!! I dealt with this struggle since a child. Even my parents and family say “Don’t do that. That’s what females do” or “You’re a boy. Act like one”. Now that I’m grown I say sometimes “Well idc. I do it. It’s ME. Let me be the first male for you to do it”

Thnx so much for this video!! I am a recording artist and I constantly question the things I do and wear for this very reason. I've been recording 14 years and have never received any recognition partly because of being a military brat and partly from being out side the black norm. What makes it more complex is I'm masculine. Which really throws people left. I don't wear dresses n such but I had green hair for the longest and I'm not shy about being sexy and wearing lace underwear and just being a versatile and free spirited black man. I'm your new subscriber. Thank you for giving me the confirmation to keep goin

One thing that has helped me personally is realizing that a lot of the standards of masculinity that cis straight black men uphold came form European colonialism and pre-colonial Africa was much more accepting of various gender expressions and identities than post-colonial Africa and the African diaspora. In other words, it's part of the legacy of colonialism and white supremacy.

I love that at the beginning of the video she made it clear that being a feminine man doesn't always affect your sexual orientation. This is to anyone who doesn't understand the point of breaking gender norms. It's not about making men feminine or making women masculine. It's about freedom of expression. Expressing yourself in a non-harmful way doesn't make you any less of who you are.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the historical significance of the emasculation of Black men as a possible reason why our community is hesitant to accept black male femininity. I’m not necessarily saying it justifies it but it does provide a significant and understandable context for it.
