Let’s Make a Trip!

Күн бұрын

This is an extremely cheap trip to experience when you're in Rio. Taking the Santa Teresa Tram from the centre of the city, across the fabulous Arcos da Lapa Aqueduct and on and up into the residential suburbs on the hillside.
This historic route is the oldest electric railway in the whole of Latin America and in this video I'll be taking you along as we traverse the cobbled streets of this fascinating neighbourhood rising to give us some fantastic views back towards the city. I'll show you where to go to catch the tram and I'll tell you how much it costs.
Thanks very much guys for those of you that do watch this video. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and spurs me on to improve the channel for everyone.
Cheers for now.
Mark

Loved the look of the heritage tram. What a nice thing to do. Surprised by the architecture of that catholic cathedral. Not at all what we would expect.

My only time in RIO was a one-day visit!! Varig Brasils National Airline CEO insisted all service contracts had to be signed in person!! So arrived AM departed PM Meeting took one hour at 9am. They then gave us a full tour even a coffee with Ronnie. 1997 Flight Varig DC10 13.5 Hrs Via Sao Paulo. What a wonderful place!!!!!! Would have liked to have stayed longer.

Great story Peter, loved the DC10 too. I came back via São Paulo, just transferring at the airport but the LATAM lounge was great. It’s one of those countries I’d love to go back to now and ultimately, that’s the best kind of trip when you come back feeling that isn’t it. Loved it!

I watched a Miles in Transit video recently of a similar tram in Buenos Aires though this one gives much better views due to the topography of Rio so thanks for making the effort.

Thanks Diana. This was just a little extra thing I did when I was over there tbh. I’m not sure it’s really what the channel wants but thought it was worth sharing anyway. All I would say is, if you get the chance, take it. It’s not as far away or as difficult as you may think, even though hardly anyone speaks English. Yes the metro’s a nightmare and there does look to be some dodgy bits but I had a great time as a solo traveller and didn’t feel unsafe at any time. 😊

Love it! Certainly brings back memories - in my 2001 trip, the old trams ran (it was free to stand outside - but at about R$2 at the time (50p) it was worth the safety of the interior!

I’ve stood on the running boards in San Francisco- 5hat was fantastic though I’m not sure if that’s allowed anymore either. H&S etc but I think when you read about the accident that happened in Rio, you can see why it was stopped.

Nice! Never knew this was a thing when I was there! I think determining whether somewhere is upscale or not is based on how many buildings seem to be “borrowing” electricity off the grid. Not sure if you went, but Urca at the bottom of Sugarloaf Mountain is a really nice area, especially at dusk.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 3 ай бұрын
I didn’t get to Urca no. Agree with the electricity observation though, Mexico City was a bit like that!

That's a pretty cool little tram, Mark. No idea this even existed. Nice views from the viaduct. Did most people just take the tram from end to end or was there any intermediate stops of interest?
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 6 ай бұрын
Yes there were one or two interesting-looking stops along the way. Most stayed on because of the time of day I suspect otherwise, yep, I would’ve got off, had a look around, and caught a later one.

Well-spotted Alice (I thought someone would). The ticket office closed at 4 but I gather anyone left in the queue at that point will get a ride. So they must’ve put this last one on to pick up the remnants of that. So 2nd, 3rd last yep, much of a muchness but you get the idea I hope 😊

Glad it reopened after the accident, which at one time looked like it wouldn't. However I'm not sure whether the pick pocket and mugging problem has been resolved. Whilst you say the houses look posh, the amount of graffiti implies otherwise.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 6 ай бұрын
Cheers for the comment Brian. What I meant with the houses I suppose is that they must’ve been fantastic at some point - maybe wealthy owners and I guess these days they’ve been overrun by well, who knows what. But like you say, the amount of graffiti implies this part of Rio’s changed a bit!
