As a father, just a heads up, as soon as your firstborn gets to kindergarten, they're going to want to play what their friends at school are playing. You're going to have the latest next gen again. It's inevitable. Just take your break now. lol

Julien I think the only issue I felt with your last video and some comments you’ve made is you’re trying to pidgin hole yourself in to a category. You don’t have to be a deck daddy or a Nintendo Papi, just Julien. Julien is a dad, a gamer, a workout enthusiast and probably a lot more. You don’t have to fit a title man :)

It would for sure seem that way on the outside. I am more trying to learn everything about ONE thing rather than a little about all things. In this space I really want to explore all things Nintendo ahas done and will do because its what resonates best with me and my life

Julien, as someone who is a Christian, a father of one and hopefully more in the future, and a gamer, I resonated with this a lot. It is hard to find time for family, faith, and passion, but you're on the right thought that the hobby needs to fit the family/faith and not the other way around. Being present for your wife and kids is huge, gaming time is bonus! This video caused me to appreciate what you're doing more, hope you can keep on the trajectory your are pushing toward, the rewards down the line are worth it!

Some of those comments are overblown but I would definitely say you’ve been indecisive the past year or two between the videos you’re making. It’s not a bad thing in my opinion. I think that’s a normal human process to go through phases of interests as our life changes and we get older. Your process has been public so unfortunately some people use that as a reason to be overly critical and dramatic. I say all that to say keep doing you no matter how much it changes or going back and forth between topics. I’ll keep watching no matter what.

If I may share my perspective, I think the reason for most people’s reaction including mine is not necessarily due to you switching what you want to talk about. But more because when you switch what you want to embrace you sort of down everything else. Like drawing a hard line against whatever isn’t what you are going all in on. Just a thought

Your indecisiveness mirrors my own after becoming a dad. My kids are a bit older than yours but I remember where you’re coming from. You only have so much free time for hobbies. In the past four years I have bought and sold an Xbox Series S and X and a PS5. I finally settled on the Steam Deck, Switch and Evercade (super niche retro console)

I relate a lot to what you’re saying, being a work at home parent with kids is tough. Working at home has a done of logistical benefits but can take a pretty large emotional toll on me as a very extroverted person. Also with rediscovering the magic of certain games through the eyes of your kids. It’s a tricky balance that a lot of people who haven’t been there just won’t understand. Keep on keeping on

LOVED this cup. I love them all. This has quickly became my favorite channel, but this cup in particular. I came around when you were looking into building a pc. Watching the journey from that point to now has been a blast. Never once did I think negatively or that you were manic in your decisions. What is wrong with sharing your experience in finding the best possible way to maintain and share your passion while still keeping your priorities straight? This is experimentation and growth. I think you've nailed it on a perfect "dad loadout". Keep maintaining the positivity and integrity. Keep being open with your faith. This channel is such a breath of fresh air, or better yet, that warm cup of coffee in a dreary morning to get you through the tumultuous days. God bless you Julien. You're a friend from afar for a lot of us.

I know it wasnt your intention, but some things said here are kinda unnecessarily combative. One doesnt have to value a gaming device as much as you value your children because they notice that you can be a bit everywhere. Theres no equivalence there. Its not steamdeck fanboyism to notice that you yourself say that you will only need this one device and you'll be content because youre too busy with your family anyway, and then a week later buying consoles from 30 years ago. And then a week after that buying a specialized handheld device. Like ok, enjoy yourself, live your life, but youre going to get called out on those inconsistencies. Its the internet. While duality is definitely a thing, one video you'll talk about serving yourself so that you can better serve your family, and the next video it'll be serving yourself doesnt matter because sacrifices need to be made to serve your family. While i get it, to a casual viewer that doesnt care about why people do what they do when they make a video it WILL come across as manic. And you gotta be ok with that perception without passive aggressively lashing out at those people. We love you, we support you, and we appreciate you. Thank you for your videos. Thank you for your humanity. And thanks for the conversation.

I think you completely lost it at the end with all the passive aggressive stuff. I would say that most of your viewers, including myself, have kids, love our families and just want to talk about games, and coffee in this case, because a lot of us don’t even have the luxury to play anymore. This is not new, I’ve been here a long time and when people criticize you, you quickly become defensive. It is ultimately your channel, but at the same time there has to be a balance with what people like to see in order to succeed, which I think is your goal. Don’t take it too personal, instead separate the wheat from the chaff, iterate, improve, find balance. The virtue is right in the middle. P.s. I like the coffee part of your videos, I hope you add a little bit more focus to it.

“Leave a comment - those last few words may be your lasting legacy” was a little nutty and felt oddly narcissistic. The cynic in me just thinks Julien is moving towards a Nintendo focused channel to maximise views when the switch 2 drops lol Can’t blame him. Pretty smart tbh. The great irony is that the healthiest thing any father can do is maybe instead of spending money on a Xbox series S,X, PS5, Nintendo switch, oled, steam deck LCD, oled, emulation consoles, n64, record player, manga, coffee equipment, controllers and all the video games across all those devices is to maybe cull the spending habits and wait until a steady income starts generating. Follow your dreams for sure, but two kids when only one parent works in today’s economy is tight. I do however think that the man has a real talent for talking. It’s fluid and sounds storyboarded when it’s not. A real skill. Maybe he sells time shares on the side for extra income. Don’t listen to the rhetoric, JD. You do you. You don’t owe anyone on this platform an explanation for your choices. Most of us normies don’t actually care. We mainly listen because you’re entertaining ❤ I have been telling you the switch is where it’s at for months though. A massive library even if you don’t vibe with first party. Peace

As a stay at home mum with 3 kids I can totally understand and relate. Before kids I played a lot on pc. But it’s just not viable to sit in another room with a headset on. Switch became my top gaming device. I also enjoy my Steamdeck a lot. My 6 year old adores Kirby and she gets to play my child friendly switch games. Got her a used 2ds so she could enjoy older Kirby games that was new to her. Brings me so much joy to see my 3 children enjoying games that I grew up with like Mario and Zelda. I really hope the next switch will be amazing and backwards compatible.

I didn’t mean to be overly critical. But you’re right-we don’t know you. I don’t know you. It’s certainly your decision to make regarding sharing your perspective with an audience but not necessarily desiring investment or feedback from said audience. I get your message though. I'm not one to write commentary on internet even less on youtube videos but as a father of 1y9m son and another one to come on a few months, I got you. After my first son was born I've sold my gaming pc and buyed a Nintendo Switch and was the best for me. I work 2 days at home and 3 on office working far from where I live, leaving me with so litle time for myself so I really cannot handle to be on my desk for so long to play a game anymore. The versatility of the Switch, to play waiting for the food I'm making is ready or to just play for 15/20 minutes on sofa from time to time when I can is amazing to me and is what made me be able to keep playing the games I love. Nice videos, loved the talk and the coffe made, keep going foward and wish all the light to you and your family mate. See you on next video.

Hey man I just wanted to say this was an awesome video, one of your best in fact. I also just want to say that I think you bringing more context through this video is really valuable to those who have criticisms about your choices in terms of your media consumption. Which is entirely up to you and shouldn't be dictated by what other people say, but some people just can't get it through their heads lol. You do what's best for you. I'm also really proud of you with being honest by saying remember this is about God and Family and then myself in that order and you presented this video and exactly in that manner which is very biblical and I think that's really awesome. 😊 And I think it's important for men like me (who have yet to get married and start a family) to watch a video like this, because it's shifting our mindset on what's important, our future families. You bring up many points that are super valuable to people like me where I'm so used to my alone time, or my gaming time alone or with the boys, when in reality it becomes rarer and rarer as we grow older and we have to raise our children because that is the priority. People say that video games are a very selfish thing and I would agree to an extent but it's also a super valuable medium that can bring people together. If you don't mind I'd like to share personal project I've been working on the last 2 or 3 years and it actually has to do with hosting LAN parties. For myself, I have really dived deep into PC gaming the last 10 years of my life and in the last year and a half I've come to the realization that I can only upgrade my personal tech only so far. I'm content where I'm at and I love my gaming PC and consoles, but what else could I do? Well, its sharing the joy I have had with my gaming experience with others by hosting LAN parties for friends and family. This has been something that I've become passionate about, and through the LAN parties we've had so far, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and it's awesome to see the reaction on my niece's and nephew's faces, my friend's faces, and the Youth Group kid's faces, when we get together and play games, the fact that we can all just sit down and play Halo 3 together through our local area network is super awesome and has brought great joy to my life. And through this LAN party project I've invested a LOT of time and money so that each person that attends can have there own computer and setup. I've invested probably a $1500+ on used parts and steam games to make sure everyone gets to play together with their own rig and account. And it's starting to get to the point where the kids want to build their own PC and God has given me the opportunity to be able to utilize my gifts with technology to assist them with finding the best price-to-performance and giving sound advice so they can enjoy the PC gaming experience I've come to enjoy so much. So keep it up Julien, God's got a wonderful plan for you and this channel. It sure has effected me in the positive about how I want to balance my gaming time with my future family and how I can still keep gaming around even with my priorities being on God and Family first. And who knows? When your kids are all grown up, you'll probably get some time to finally get around to that 3rd Final Fantasy VII remake 😅 Take it easy, -Jake

The rule of being a KZfaqr is finding your niche audience. Like Marques Brownlee will not talk about the movies he saw because that’s not his lane. He makes a living covering gadgets. Chris Stuckmann will not talk about phones as his lane is reviewing movies. We were a little confused by some of the things you said over the last two weeks, Julien. A couple weeks ago, you were all about loving the Steam Deck and how PC handhelds are the future. Then over a week ago, you talked about the joy you had playing your Switch next to your daughter or the joy you have when you watch her play Super Mario Bros. Wonder. You need to understand that there are people who follow you for specific content. You can go from starting off talking about Xbox series to the PS5 to PC handhelds then briefly praise the PS Portal and then you’re now back on the Switch. It’s like changing a religion each week. And people who own a Deck or PS5 may not be fans of Nintendo. Hence, why they got a Deck or PS5 in the first place. Nintendo is too kiddie for them. I personally am not bothered by it. Who am I to judge you? I don’t have kids or a wife and I’m 43. I’m doing it by choice. I actually think you should change your name to GAMER DAD but I think that’s already been taken. Because you talk more about your kids in your videos than video games. And I think that’s great because your children are still very young. You’re still in the early years being a dad. Ages 1-3 is like the cutest stages of their life. Wait when they’re like ages 6-8. They will start talking over each other and asking the same questions: Daddy, are we there yet? Can we go here, Dad? Can you buy me this, Dad? Russ of Retro Game Corp is the same age as me but he rarely talks about his sons. Dave2D has kids. Same with ETA. A lot of guys with retro gaming channels are middle-aged like me and have kids in their teens already. You’re the KZfaq gaming/coffee channel that talks about his kids the most. I would talk about my kids all the time too if I had any. I’m actually great around kids. I’m the fun-loving uncle type. But while I’m great around kids, I don’t want to have any. I was reading a thread in the Xennials section on Reddit and it was quite hilarious reading some of the comments. The question was is there anybody having kids over 40? Many said they already had kids and don’t want anymore. Have no time for themselves. These are my own peers. One even said he still thinks about that vasectomy he should’ve got after having 3 kids and it got a lot of likes. My own peers giving me more reassurance NOT to have kids. One of them was like 45 and her son was already 27 and she’s like saying no more kids for her. Some people like me aren’t built to have a family, and some people are built for it like Julien. The way I see it, Julien, you do you. Don’t let random online strangers dictate your life or your actions. But it did make us a bit confused, ya know? From praising the Steam Deck one week to being an exclusive Nintendad the next? The INDECISIVE/Wishy-Washy Gamer, I guess. Just keep all your portables and sell the rest. The Steam Deck is very much like a portable Xbox One. Xbox and PCs share similar libraries. Yes, there are Sony games on Steam but for how long once Sony releases their own handheld again? And perhaps as Julien said, many of these Sony and Microsoft libraries are forgettable compared to Nintendo libraries that made a bigger impression during our younger days. Our childhood nostalgia for Nintendo will always be strong no matter how big of a pain in the ass they can be. I say to keep your options open. Don’t limit yourself to one company. If you want to be the next RGT 85 who gets labeled a Nintendo fanboy, do it. But I do think you will get bored fast if all you did was talk Nintendo and nothing else. Then you will lose the audience that came here to listen to you praising the Steam Deck. Some people may feel betrayed by that. You keep switching teams more than LeBron did. Been wanting to comment on this a few days ago but didn’t find the time because I’ve been more focused discussing things like The Acolyte and House of the Dragon S2. Video games have taken a backseat this month. I still play my Steam Deck and Switch Lite. I still haven’t beaten Weiss yet on FF7 Remake Intergrade. Such a pain in the ass boss fight. He did Immaculate End to me twice in a span of 30 seconds. 🤦🏻 The only one I need to beat to get my first plat. I can stagger him more consistently as of late, so there’s progress. The Switch Lite is still great to use though. A lot easier to bring with me in a movie theater. I brought it with me when watching Bad Boys 4 and it’s cool to play some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe while the trailers that I’ve already seen are playing. I understand your move back to Nintendo. I get it, bro. But keep your options open and don’t jump all over the place. From Deck Daddy to Portable Pappa to Nintendad/Retro Gamer Dad in a blink of an eye. Real quick, be a little cautious exposing your daughter from too much video games. Let her read books too. Video games are cool but it can be too much of a distraction when learning things. That dopamine kick. I didn’t game until I was 7. Your daughter is turning 4 and is probably more advanced in gaming than I was at age 7. But being exposed to video games that early may not be the most healthy thing for her young brain. Or you expose her to EDUCATIONAL video games. If I had my own kids, I wouldn’t get them a cell phone until they’re old enough to pay for it. Which means they should have a job and a car (ages 16 & up). I probably wouldn’t let them play video games until they reach 10. I’d rather see my kids read books and watch classic movies on TV. Or get them into sports or martial arts so they can learn to exercise to live a longer life. Or get them to learn how to play an instrument or learn a different language. Video games, Internet, smartphones, and social media can rot their brains. Educate your kids. Pushing this button or that button is not going to make them productive in the long haul. Can also ruin their eyes. Video games are essentially virtual toys. Time wasters. Get them to loving God first, reading, and learning more. Let them be socially active.

Hey listen bro I think we all learning in this journey together as your viewers. As long as your gaming aligns parallel to the family needs and wants your good!! We are in an era of gaming where gaming is so accessible through phones and multiple consoles that when it comes time to decide what to play on it’s tough for some to choose. At this point convenience is key and keeping it simple is a much better option especially when you can share it with the family. The only nit picks would be performance and graphics and if that doesn’t matter then play games as a minimalist with what you have already. I follow the same suit with Nintendo, pc and retro handheld combination for different situations I may need each device in which reduces me becoming overwhelmed on what I should one playing on especially not being able to be home glued to the console like when I was kid.

My wife is like ‘you doing your comparing and testing again ?’ ‘You got xcloud again haven’t you ?’ ‘Oh your back on the switch? ‘You sold your steam deck?’ Etc lol. For now , switch all the way . 2 boys , 2 year old and a 6 year old . Also I’m on the worship team at church, and Jesus is always my number 1

I like too hear what you said. I take it and think about it. But I will always look first and foremost at what is best for me. At the moment I am playing more on the TV again because my circumstances allow it. I actually enjoy playing on the TV more because I am more focused on what is happening on the screen. I consciously sit in front of the TV and play a game. I no longer enjoy playing a quick game on my handheld while my children are around me. From now on I will strictly separate the two. I am someone who needs to focus on something. I have my family around me? Then games don't play a role. The family doesn't need me right now because they are sleeping or something similar? Games are my focus. That is how I am doing it at the moment and it is working well. Life with a family requires flexibility. So things can change again. I am very relaxed about it all.

totally agree with your approach. That makes sense for you. With my little ones I am often holding a sleeping kiddo and my gaming is strictly in my office so I love the fact I can get cozy on the couch and play some paper mario while the one year old takes a nap

Totally relate to this... I sold my ps4 years ago after just sitting in the living room collecting dust... And now with my 6yo and wife we have the time of our life play super smash on the switch while the baby sleeps 🥲... There something about being able to bring your games with you that makes it special l, I'm my case I bring my switch to work to play during my break because once I'm home I wanna be there for my family.

I used to be so good about study the word of God, I really need/want to back into that habit. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite bible verse? There are so many great ones but I personally always go back to John 14:21.

Hey julien been subscribed to your channel for a little while now and enjoy your topics of discussion, i found you initially when i was considering if purchasing an xbox series s was worth it..i was coming from a ps4 and wanted to play the new next gen games without shelling out £500...i have always seen you as someone whos very passionate about gaming no matter the platform, your very knowledgeable of all the consoles and handhelds, dont be afraid of being a gamer who does not sit in one camp that just enjoys gaming on every platform, and just make videos on whatever the hell you want to talk about, its perfectly fine to enjoy and own a switch...ps5...xbox...steam deck and whatever else and talk about each as and when you feel excited too, and its no problem going through phases where you just enjoy covering content on one particular console if that's what you enjoying and playing the most...being a gamer and having them all to talk about as and when is awessome 👌 you just do you bud

Well it’s understandable for you as a new father to cut out some gaming. I wouldn’t be worried about comments, that’s a very reasonable downsize to make.
