Beginning the review, we first took a look at what all came with the product. Included is a CR123A battery, bungie pouch, lanyard and the RX-2800 rangefinder.
To sort out if this is best rangefinder for you, we have to explain the two modes the Leupold RX-2800 uses. The primary modes are LOS mode and TBR mode.
LOS mode stands for line of sight. This means the range finder is going to take the distance from the reticle and make no adjustments to the range. This can cause some errors when you are looking up or down at a steep angle. What may seem like 30 yards is really 21, which could drastically alter a close range shot. The LOS mode outputs the pure distance to the target and also the angular measurement making it a great mode to plug into a ballistic calculator.
The Leupold RX-2800 then also has the TBR mode which then makes adjustments to the range based off of the distance and angular measurements to give you a corrected range. So if a target LOOKS like it's 30 yards away, this would correct you to give you your actual distance of 21 yards so you can aim properly without overshooting.
The TBR mode can also function in three methods, BAS, MOA, MIL, and TRIG that all give different functions. The BAS mode spits out only the adjusted distance while the MIL and MOA show the LOA distance and angular measurements while also giving you your MOA and MIL.....in theory. Finally, the TRIG mode gives you both the distance to the target and the target height. This is particularly important if you want to know the height of an object.
The MOA and MIL measurements mentioned are based off the group selection. Here you select a particular ballistic group. The issue is that each ballistic group also tells you what your zero should be. For my selection, they want a 300 yard zero. That's just not possible with my reticle.
Another function of the 2800 TBRw is the wind function. Here it allows you to turn on and off the wind selection which simulates a 10 mph wind coming from 90 degress.
The Leupold RX-2800 also allows you to adjust the brightness (no auto) and select to use last target. Last target allows the rangefinder to wait for the last laser to return and use that for the final measurement. This allows for easier long range ranging.
On the RX-2800 TBR/w there are also 3 options for reticles, a large indicator, a small cross, or a combination of both.
I found the Leupold RX-2800 TBR/w to be a great option for a long distance range finder. For hunting, I believe there are some cheaper options that give you some auto ranging that is more functional.

Hey man I'm a little confused with the operation of this range finder. When it gives you the wind adjustment lets say it spits out 1.00 MIL for wind adjustment. How do you know whether you have to dial your optic 1.00 MIL to the left or to the right? Also with the TBR function ON it should automatically give you the calculated distance below taking into account the angle correct?

I bought rx 1400 tbr/w I just couldn't seen to understand ballistics, I was also using it with a 6.5 140g match, there was no other video or site that explained it the way you did, this was very thorough and for that I just subscribed. my problem was I was putting moas that it told me to and was always off by like 12 inches but I'm zeroed at 100yds, mine is a 5x they also want me to zero at 300yds which I found it absurd. Thanks for the video.

yea...like why have your zero locked at such an absurd distance. It makes no sense. Just a very poorly designed product at a premium price. At least you know to ignore it now haha -Walsh

I almost got a cheap range finder a few months ago that a buddy was selling,I want one to take to the range with me because they don’t have any distances marked. They get super expensive and I’d probably only use it a few times, mainly when zeroing something like if I ever zero my backup sights

Very good review. I've watched one other and it really hyped up the range capability, even to 3000 yards. Not into the other functions which you've covered really well, and I too would agree not usable. I've changed my mind on this range finder and will not be purchasing. There'll be other better options to come along.

@@ThinLineDefenseCo I assume you're not talking about a pickup truck or scale (both use ranger) and meant the Vortex Razor HD 4000. An Australian gentleman did a review about a year ago on the 4000 and had some issues with range repeatability beyond 2000 yards. He did not, however, go into any detail about other features. If you do get your hands on one, I look forward to seeing your review. I agree, putting out $500 (any amount for that matter) for something and it doesn't live up to your expectations or finding all the hype not to be true is very disappointing.

@@davepartlow6430 ahh yea!! The razor HD 4000. I don't need to go 2000 but a little over 1000 would be nice. And yea...I'm getting to play with quite a few of these and as a consumer....I'd be pretty mad to get this product. I'll try to get the 4000 next! -Walsh

@@ThinLineDefenseCo It's really a shame, I also expected more from Leupold at that price. That's one of the reasons why I rather opted for the black LCD display on the 1300i. I also heard complaints about pixels dying and displays dimming on the OLED models.
