Today we’re looking at a blues comping etude that I wrote after drawing a lot of inspiration from the rhythm playing of a modern day blues master - Kirk Fletcher!
Visit this link to download the TAB files for FREE (PDF & Guitar Pro) - mailchi.mp/bulletproofguitarp...
There are loads of incredible blues players out there today - Josh Smith, Matt Schofield, Joe Bonamassa and Eric Gales are just a few of the guys I’ve been listening to for years now but Kirk Fletcher is one who I only started really listening to over the past few months.
Kirk is of course a fantastic lead blues player but as I mention in this video, it’s his blues comping / rhythm chops that really fascinate me as both a fan and a student of blues guitar playing.
I wrote this etude and uploaded it to instagram a few months ago. In terms of the chord voicings I used, the single note lines I threw in between the chords and the rhythmic feel in general, it was very much inspired by Kirk’s rhythm playing.
In this free lesson, I break the etude down into 5 key elements to help you better understand how I put it together.
The 5 key elements are:
The shuffle feel
Chord voicings
Double-stops (on the I chord)
Passing chords
Single-note lines
I hope you guys enjoy this free lesson - I had a lot of fun making it.
Video edited by John Hollingworth.

I really like this lesson and how you have stressed the importance of timing and spatial awareness. It isn’t your straight forward SRV style shuffle. Reminds me of Robben Ford the most. Like how he added a 13th bar onto the song Somebody’s Fool.

This is such a great video for many reasons. First, juicy blues rhythm techniques truly are overlooked. Second, Kirk Fletcher is great. Third, Ross does everyone a great service by firmly looping theory into the lesson, which is also such an overlooked aspect with YT guitar lesson videos. This video is 19:48 long and every second is valuable. Lastly, the natural teaching skill and passion are flat out obvious, which makes being on the learning side much more enjoyable. Thanks dude!

May I just comment that this lesson is really good. However, Kirk plus many others have a deep understanding of the rhythm playing going back beyond SRV. Louis Myers, Robert Jr Lockwood , Jimmy Rogers and later Junior Watson , Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are masters at this. Swing guitarists have a lot to offer as well . I met Kirk and saw him play nearly 20 years ago and KNOW that his knowledge is deep. Rhythm guitar is so underrated, yet the best guitarists are those that play it and know it. It's 90% of the song. Thank you for doing this lesson.

As much as I enjoy listening to searing leads, I'm not the guy to take the front stage, so I very much apreciate playing a supporting role and have fun doing it.
